  • During start up and shut down of a proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), the performance and lifetime of PEMFC were reduced. In this study, effect of startup and shutdown were investigated in dead-end type PEMFC using oxygen as a cathode gas with polarization curve, impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Dummy load which eliminates residual hydrogen and oxygen during startup and shutdown operation should be applied to mitigated the degradation of PEMFC performance. At 50% relative humidity (RH) under the repetitive on/off cycling, the cell performance decayed faster than at 100% RH because of corrosion of the cathode carbon support. Water suppling into cell reduced the degradation rate of dead-end type PEMFC during start up and shut down cycling at 50% RH.

  • The waterhammer has recently become more important because the pumping stations were big and the systems conveying the fluid through the large and long transmission pipelines were complex. When the pumps are started or stopped for the operation or tripped due to the power failure, the hydraulic transients occur as a result of the sudden change in velocity As the pressure waves are propagating between the pumping station and the distributing reservoir, the pressure inside the pipe drops to the liquid vapor pressure with the pipeline profile, at which time a vapor cavity forms, and finally the column separation occurs. If the pressure in the pipe is less than the atmospheric pressure, the pipe can be collapsed and destroyed after the water columns separated by the vapor cavity rejoin. During the reverse flow, the pressure is so abnormally increased at the pumping station that the accident of flooding may happen due to the failure of system. In this paper, the field tests on the waterhammer by the startup, stoppage, and power failure of a centrifugal pump were carried out for Yongma transmission pumping station in Seoul. The experimental results were compared with that of the numerical calculations, in which results the procedure of controlled pump normal shut-down and the two-step closing mode of controlling the ball valve for pump emergency stop are proposed to reduce the pressure surge.

  • Programs of energy balance, mode analysis and transient analysis for a liquid rocket engine have been introduced. The analysis methods have been verified through comparison between the present results, and the results of the other program and experimental data. An energy balance analysis is used for engine system design at the early development phase. A mode analysis is used for decision of engine operation conditions and test conditions, and studying deviation of an engine performance. A transient analysis can predict a propellant flow rate, thrust, impulse at transient phase. It is essential to establish a startup/shut down sequence. The analysis programs will be used to develop the engines of KSLV-II.
