  • A very simple and computationally efficient numerical method is developed for the free vibration of isotropic and orthotropic composite triangular plates. A set of two-dimensional simple series functions is used as an admissible displacement functions in the Rayleigh-Ritz method to obtain the natural frequencies, nodal patterns and mode shapes for the plates. From the prescribed starting function satisfying only the geometric boundary conditions, the higher terms in the series functions are constructed with adding order of polynominal. Natural frequencies, nodal patterns and mode shapes are obtained for right triangular plates with three different support conditions. The obtained numerical results are presented, and the isotropic and some orthotropic cases are verified with other numerical methods in the liternature.

  • DLN-2.6 combustion tuning was carried out for the maintenance of GE 7FA+e gas turbine at Seo-Incheon combined cycle power plant. DLN-2.6 combustion system has the higher level of yellow plume and combustion vibration problem in the initial operating mode than that of the base mode($100{\sim}160MW$). The objectives of this study are to investigate the causes of yellow plume and combustion vibration problems at the starting mode and to suggest the best operating condition for the reliable working of the real combustors. By the analysis of tuning data, we could conclude that a yellow plume is caused by the rich mixture(${\phi}{\sim}1$) in a PM 1 nozzle at mode 3($20{\sim}30MW$). In addition, the combustion vibration($120{\sim}140Hz$) might be related to the cold flow characteristics of PM 3 nozzles at mode 6B($40{\sim}45MW$).

  • In this study, it was investigated that the characteristics of startup and compatibility using several type hot and cold gases. The characteristics of starting LRE by pyro starter was compared with that by a Helium spinner. The compatibility of pyro gas, a gaseous Helium, Hydrogen+Nitrogen mixture gas, and air was investigated by a simple 1D turbine analysis considered the properties of each gas and turbine efficiency. Most of them were compatible to start up the LRE however air was properly used only for low power mode of turbine.

  • The real time unmanned monitoring system of an equipment's internal parts and condition requires the monitoring device to be able to stop at a set location on the rail. However, due to the slip between the driving surface and the roller, an error occurs between the actual position and the command position. In this paper, a method to compensate the position error due to the roller slip is proposed. A proximity sensor located at both ends of the rail detects the starting point and the maximum position pulse, linearly compensating the error between the angular position of the motor and the mechanically fixed starting and maximum position pulse of the rail in forward and reverse direction. Moreover, unlike the existing servo position controller, the motor adopts the position detection method of Hall sensor in BLDC (Brushless DC) and applies an algorithm for low-speed driving so that a stable position control is possible. The proposed rail guided unmanned monitoring system with driving slip compensator was tested to verify the effectiveness.

  • The HCCI combustion mode poses its own set of narrow engine operating by knocking. In order to solve this, inhomogeneity method of mixture and temperature is suggested. The purpose of this research is to get fundamental knowledge about the effect of thermal stratification on HCCI combustion of PRF -Air mixture. The temperature stratification is made by buoyancy effect in combustion chamber of RCM. The analysis items are pressure, temperature of in-cylinder gas and combustion duration. In addition, the structure of flames using the two dimensional chemiluminescence's images by a framing camera are analyzed. Under stratification, the LTR starting time and the HTR starting time are advanced than that of homogeneous. Further, the LTR period of homogeneous conditions became shorter than that of the stratified conditions. With the case of homogeneous condition, the luminosity duration becomes shorter than the case of stratified condition. Additionally, under stratified condition, the brightest luminosity intensity is delayed longer than at homogeneous condition.

  • A high-resolution numerical study is carried out to investigate the transient process of the combustion and the shock-train developments in an ethylene-fueled direct-connect dual-mode scramjet combustor. Following the fuel injection, air-throttling is applied at the expansion part of the combustor to provide mass addition to block the flow to subsonic speed. The ignition occurs several ms later when the fuel and air are mixed sufficiently. The pressure build up by the combustion leads to the shock train formation in the isolator section that advances to the exit of the intake nozzle. Then, the air-throttling is deactivated and the exhaust process begins and the situation before the air-throttling is restored. Present simulation shows the detailed processes in the dual-mode scramjet combustor for better understanding of the operation regimes and characteristics.

  • The degree of purification and the macrostructure of high purity aluminium were studied through the alternate stirring method in order to improve the nonuniformity of solute concentration in the unidirectional stirring method. The $2^3$ factorial design was done to examine the effects of experimental factors more qualitatively. In the relatively low stirring speed of 1500 rpm with alternate stirring mode, the uniform solute profile and refined grain structure were obtained due to strong washing effect and turbulent fluid flow. It was induced by the transition of the momentum boundary layer by alternation of the stirrer. It was concluded from this study that the alternate stirring mode was more effective to obtain the uniformity of solute even in the stirring speed of 1500 rpm. But the degree of purification decreased below the critical alternating period. When 2N(99.8wt.%) aluminium was used as the starting material the morphology of solid-liquid showed the cellular shape and the columnar grains were inclined to the direction of rotation. This inclined grain growth resulted from the difference of relative velocities of solid and liquid. The inclined angle was increased as the stirring speed increased and solidification proceeded. In the case of 4N aluminium, there was no inclined grain growth and it was confirmed from the macrostructure and SEM work that the morphology of solid-liquid interface was planar. From the factorial design, it was found that the alternate stirring mode showed poorer purification effect than that of unidirectional stirring mode at low speed(500 rpm). In addition, the factor that had the most significant effect on the degree of purification was the stirring speed.

  • Machine learning-based structural health monitoring (ML-based SHM) methods are researched extensively in the recent decade due to the availability of advanced information and sensing technology. ML methods are well-known for their pattern recognition capability for complex problems. However, the main obstacle of ML-based SHM is that it often requires pre-collected historical data for model training. In most actual scenarios, damage presence can be detected using the unsupervised learning method through anomaly detection, but to further identify the damage types would require prior knowledge or historical events as references. This creates the cold-start problem, especially for new and unobserved structures. Modal-based methods identify damages based on the changes in the structural global properties but often require dense measurements for accurate results. Therefore, a two-stage hybrid modal-machine learning damage detection scheme is proposed. The first stage detects damage presence using Principal Component Analysis-Frequency Response Function (PCA-FRF) in an unsupervised manner, whereas the second stage further identifies the damage. To solve the cold-start problem, mode shape assessment using the first mode is initiated when no trained model is available yet in the second stage. The damage identified by the modal-based method would be stored for future training. This work highlights the performance of the scheme in alleviating the cold-start issue as it transitions through different phases, starting from zero damage sample available. Results showed that single and multiple damages can be identified at an acceptable accuracy level even when training samples are limited.
