  • The adiabatic slirn-type autoclave reactor for free radical polymerization of LDPE is represented by a two-compartment four-cell model, which is proven effective to predict the reactor behavior as well as the polymer properties. Since the temperature distribution along the reactor axis plays the central role for the properties of the polymer product, it is important in practice to regulate the temperature in each compartment. The present study aims for the application of the adaptive control algorithm not only in the period of start-up but also during the steady state operation. It is shown that the temperature control is significantly improved over the conventional PID-control and this also brings about a reduction of variations in the polymer properties. This study demonstrates the potential application of the adaptive controller for the control of the polymerization reactor operated under the adiabatic condition.

  • A numerical analysis is presented for the transient behavior of a rotating turbines blades. The response due to partial admission during start-up and resonance pass is considered, Modal analysis and numerical integation method are used for solving the problems A theory for determining the material and aerodynamic damping values of turbine blades is presented. The damping values of the various modeling of blaes-uniform beam and tapered twisted beam-are calculated and the influence on blades response is investigated. The effect of angular velocity on transient response are also shown.

  • A thorough understanding of the transient behavior during load following and start-up is essential in the design and operation of an heat recovery steam generator(HRSG). During this period of time, material that is exposed to high temperature and experiences a large temperature variation is subject to high thermal stress. APESS(Advanced Plant Engineering & Simulation System) is a dynamic simulation software for power plant which is under being developed by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. This paper present the introduction of APESS and the result of simulation for an heat recovery steam generator.

  • Most domestic fossil power plant have exceeded 100,000 hours of operation with the severe operating condition. Among the critical components of fossil power plant, high temperature steam pipe system have had a many problems and damage from unstable displacement behavior because of frequent start up and shut down. In order to prevent the serious damage and failure of the critical pipe system in fossil power plant, 3-dimensional displacement measurement system were developed for the on-line monitoring system. 3-D Measurement system was developed with using the LVDT type sensor and rotary encoder type sensor, this system was installed and operated on the real power plant successfully. In the future time, network system of on-line diagnosis for critical pipe will be designed.

  • Fuel-cell powered Railway Vehicle Propulsion Systems (RVPSs) are highly desirable due to environment friendly characteristics, and high efficiency of fuel cell (FC). Among various types, the faster start-up and optimality to frequent starts and stops of Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) makes it well suited for propulsion systems. A comprehensive model of PEMFC with reflection of multi-physics behavior required to identify and validate its performance in real RVPSs. Thus this paper will model and simulate the PEMFC unit cell model: a detailed reflection of governing laws and account of dynamic conditions.

  • Dynamic behavior of Libr-water absorption system using low-temperature hot water was investigated numerically. Thermal-hydraulic model of single-effect/double-lift 100 RT chiller was developed by applying transient conservation equations of total mass, Libr mass, energy and momentum to each component. Transient variations of system properties and transport variables were analysed during start-up operation. Numerical analysis were performed to quantify the effects of bulk concentration and part-load operation on the system performance in terms of cooling capacity, coefficient of performance, and time constant of system. For an absorption chiller considered in the present study, optimum bulk concentration was found to exist, which resulted in the minimum time constant with stable cooling capacity. COP and time constant increased as the load decreased down to 40%, below which the time constant increased abruptly and COP decreased as the load decreased further.

Transient variations of system properties and transport variables were analysed during start-up operation. Numerical analyses were performed to quantify the effects of bulk concentration and charging ratio on the system performance in terms of cooling capacity, coefficient of performance, and time constant of system. For an absorption chiller considered in the present study, optimum charging ratio and bulk concentration were to found to exist, which resulted in the maximum cooling capacity and COP. The time constant increased as the charging ratio increased, but decreased with the increase of bulk concentration.

Numerical description of start-up viscoelastic plane Poiseuille flow

  • We have investigated the transient behavior of 1D fully developed Poiseuille viscoelastic flow under finite pressure gradient described by the Oldroyd-B and Leonov constitutive equations. For analysis we employ a simple $2^{nd}$ order discretization scheme such as central difference for space and the Crank-Nicolson for time approximation. For the analysis of the Oldroyd-B model, we also apply the analytical solution, which is obtained again in this work in terms of elementary solution procedure simpler than the previous one (Waters and King, 1970). Both models demonstrate qualitatively similar solutions, but their eventual steady flowrate exhibits noticeable difference due to the absence or presence of shear thinning behavior. In the inertialess flow, the flowrate instantaneously attains a large value corresponding to the Newtonian creeping flow and then decreases to its steady value when the applied pressure gradient is low. However with finite liquid density the flow field shows severe fluctuation even accompanying reversals of flow directions. As the assigned pressure gradient increases, the flowrate achieves its steady value significantly higher than its value during oscillations after quite long period of time. We have also illustrated comparison between 1D and 2D results and possible mechanism of complex 2D flow rearrangement employing a previous solution of [mite element computation. In addition, we discuss some mathematical points regarding missing boundary conditions in 2D modeling due to the change of the type of differential equations when varying from inertialess to inertial flow.

  • 두산중공업(주)에서 개발 중인 발전용 가스터빈 DGT-5 엔진의 작동 특성을 평가하였다. 다양한 연료 스케쥴과 여러 가지 조합의 bleed valve 개폐 제어에 대한 영향을 분석하기 위한 시험을 통해 시동 특성을 개선하였고, 시동부터 부하운전 전체 작동 영역에서 압축기에서의 불안정 현상 없이 엔진이 안정적으로 작동됨을 확인하였다. 순간적인 부하 변동과 load rejection에 대한 엔진의 동적 거동 분석을 통해 실제 계통 병입 조건에서 급격한 부하변동 시 엔진이 안정적으로 제어될 수 있음을 확인하였다.
