Phyroplankton samples were collected seasonally from March to December, 1982 in order to study the distribution of phyroplankton and their relation to environmental factors in Kwang-yang Bay. A total of 211 taxa of phyroplankton representing 67 genera, 196 species, 14 varieties, and 1 forma have been identified. Seasonal succession of dominant species is evident in this bay; Rhiwosolenia deiicatula, Chroomonas sp. being predominant in spring, Chroomonas sp. in summer, Chaetoceros debilis, C. socialis in autumn, and Skeletonema costatum, Chroomonas sp. in winter, repectively. The standing crops of the phyroplankton vary with time, and hare relevance to NH$\_$3/-N concentration, grazing pressure, and temperature. In spring, diatom blooming is relatively well correlated with the NH$\_$3/-N concentration. The species diversity is rather low in general. The fraction of nanoplankton total cell number represents an annual average of 36.5%, showing a meaningful contribution to the primary production and food web in this water system. Spatial distribution of phytoplankton indicates that this bay could e divided into three chracteristic areas; Seomjin-river mouth area heavily influenced by fresh water, western-half area scarecely affected by the oceanic water, and eastern-half area heavily influenced by the oceanic water. The industrial effluents from the YeochunIndustrial Complex also affected the spatial distribution of phyroplankton.
The physico-chemical characteristics and seasonal variations of phytoplankton community were investigated in the Paksil and Jungyang marshes. Water and phytoplankton samples for analyses were collected monthly from April 2002 to March 2003. A total of 421 taxa of phytoplankton belonging to eight classes identified. The number of taxa was highest in Bacillariophyceae, followed by Chlorophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Dinophyceae, Xanthophyceae and Cryptophyceae. The standing crops ranged from 1.25 ${\times}$$10^6$ to 5.85 ${\times}$$10^6$ cells ${\cdot}l^{-1}$ in Paksil marsh and 0.25 to 9.63 ${\times}$$10^6$ cells ${\cdot}l^{-1}$ in Jungyang marsh. The highest algal density at Paksil marsh was recorded in October during the high development of Chlorococcales while the lowest value occured in July. In the Jungyang marsh, the maximum algal density was recorded in October when Cryptomonas sp. and Mallomonas sp. accounted for 64% to total cell numbers and the lowest cell density was observed in January due to the decrease of Chlorophyceae. The dominant species were represented by Euglena proxima, Trachelomonas oblonga, Trachelomonas volvocina of Euglenophyceae, Dictyosphaerium pulchellum, Monoraphidium griffithii, Oocystis parva of Chlorophyceae, Dinobryon sertularia, Kephyrion rubri-claustri of Chrysophyceae, Achnanthes minutissima of Bacillariophyceae and Cryptomonas sp. of Cryptophyceae in the Paksil and Jungyang marshes. Phytoplankton diversity(H’) and dominance index varied rather irregularly throughout the sampling period but they were significantly correlated. The highest diversity(H’Paksil = 3.68, H’Jungyang = 3.63) coincided with the lowest values of dominance(DPaksil = 0.05, DJungyang = 0.05)
A phytoplankton study in the Korean waters has been commenced from 1964 as parts of the primary production studies in the Korean waters and the cruise for the cooperative studies of the Kuroshio from 1965 to 1968. Samples are taken by dipping 300-500 ml of sea water from the surface, and then fixed by adding neutralized formalin. The phytoplankton identification and cell counts are made on samples carefully after concentrated by decanting and centrifuging in the laboratory. This report deals with the surface phytoplankton obtained during the period of August 14-27, 1965 at twenty-three stations in the Korea Strait. Fifty nine species in seventeen genera of diatoms are detected from the samples collected at the stations. Among them seven species in five genera are considered to be purely neritic or cold water species and eight species in four genera are oceanic species of the Kuroshio. The highest phytoplankton standing crops are found in the sea area neighboring coastal waters of southern Korea, and the species distribution show anomalies in normally oceanic species being confined to neritic waters. There are distinct genera compositions of eastern, western and intermediate sea areas in the Kore Strait.
This study investigated the changes caused by diverting water applications at the riverhead of the Onchun Stream via the monitoring of several water quality and biological parameters between 10/09 and 10/10. The analysis indicated that the Onchun Stream distinctly decreased in terms of several water quality parameters, such as BOD, COD, TN, TP, and the concentration of heavy metals as compared to similar values in 2005, before the flowing of the Nakdong River. Especially, BOD showed the 2nd grade of water quality, with an average of 2.0 mg/l at all sites. The species number and standing crops of plankton and benthic macroinvertebrates in the Onchun Stream were also increased. Thus, it was concluded that diverting water from the Nakdong River to the Onchun Stream dramatically improved various environmental indices, such as water quality and biological changes.
For 4 years (2000 ${\sim}$ 2003), annual fluctuations of standing crops of cyanobacteria and physicochemical factors were examined at five sites from Bridge of Seungsoo to Bridge of Seungsan in the lower part of Han River. The cyanobacterial abundance (ND to 4,167 cells $mL^{-1}$) was strongly decreased during the heavy rains in every year. During the similar periods in 2003, cyanobacteria hardly observed, and comprised below of 10 percentage of total phytoplankton. In the period of little cyanobacteria, some green algae and diatom dominated the phytoplankton community, while the concentration of chlorophyll a has not largely change. These results indicate that heavy frequent precipitation strongly limited the growth of cyanobacteria, and lead an algal succession by the appearance of new algal groups.
Seasonal variations of cyanobacterial toxins (microcystins) in Yeongehun reservoir were studied from March to December, 2007. High level of microcystins production was shown during the late autumn and winter seasons. Total microcystins concentration increased sharply when the dominant species changed from Anabaena sp. to Microcystis aeruginosa. Microcystins-RR and -YR were the main components of the microcystins, whereas microcystin-LR was detected in small quantities. Especially, large amounts of microcystin-LR were detected when standing crops of M. aeruginosa increased exponentially. Total microcystins concentration showed a negative correlation with water temperature. However, total microcystins were lowly correlated with other environmental factors except for water temperature. As a result, this study clearly demonstrated that M. aeruginosa was the main producer of microcystins in Yeongchun reservoir.
The community dynamics and distribution of dinoflagellates and their cysts were monitored monthly from June 1996 to May 1997 at six stations in Masan-Chinhae Bay, one of the famous bays for red-tide occurrence in Korea. The dinoflagellate standing crops ranged from the minimum of 306 cells $ml^{-1}$ in February to the maximum of 37,959 cells $ml^{-1}$ in May. The species causing massive blooms were Prorocentrum micans Ehrenberg and Ceratium furca (Ehrenberg) Claparede & Lachmann in July, Gymnodinium sanguineum Hirasaka in October, Alexandrium tamarense (Lebour) Balech in April and Proroeentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller in May. Twenty-seven taxa of dinoflagellate cysts were isolated, including 20 identified species and 7 unidentified species. The mean cyst abundance ranged from the minimum of 556 cysts $cm^{-3}$ in June to the maximum of 5,727 cysts$cm^{-3}$ in February. The spatial pattern of cyst distribution showed the gradual increase in abundance from offshore to inshore stations. The cyst genera of Protoperidinium, Gymnodinium, Serippsiella, Gyrodinium and Alexandrium were abundant throughout the year. The vertical distribution of cysts showed the surface miximum at the 0-2cm layer and the sub-surface maximum at the 2-4cm layer. Total abundance of cysts showed the most significant relationships with water temperature, and some minor relationship with dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, phosphate and total inorganic nitrogen of surface and bottom layer in the water column. The number of dinoflagellate species decreased, while the abundance of cysts increased 4.5 times as compared with the observation of 10 years prior to the present study at the same stations of Masan-Chinhae Bay.
A comparison between the productivity of the evergreen needle pine(Pinus densiflora) and of the deciduous broad leaved oak(Quercus mongolica) stands, which is located near Choon-Chun city, Kangwon dist. have been established. The pine stand had a stand density of 938 trees per ha and oak stand had of 638 trees per ha. The diameter at breast height (D) and the height of tree (H) of each tree were measured in sample plot of 800$m^2$. Twelve standard sample trees chose from the sample area felled down, and then weighed the stem, branches and leaves separately, according to both the stratified clip technique and the stem analysis. The vertical distribution of photosynthetic system was arranged effectively for high productivity in the productive structure of both trees. The allometric relation between D2H and dry weight of stem (Ws), branches (Wb) and leaves (Wl) of pine were approximated by log Ws=0.6212 log D2H-0.5383 log Wb=0.4681 log D2H-0.7236 log Wl=0.2582 log D2H-5.1567 and those of oak were approximated by log Ws=0.5125 log D2H+0.0231 log Wb=0.5125 log D2H-0.3755 log Wl=0.8721 log D2H-2.9710 From the above, the standing crops of pine and oak in the sample area were estimated to be as much as 38.83ton and 48.11 ton of dry matter, above ground, per ha, respectively. Annual net production as the sum of the biomass newly formed during one year was appraised at 12.66ton/ha.yr in pine stand and at 8.74 ton/ha.yr in oak. The reason of high productivity of pine stand compared with oak might be resulted from much more about 4 times of the amount of the photosynthetic system, but less non-photosynthetic one of pine than those of oak. To increase the productivity of the forest stands investigated it was necessary to make densly a stand density, to be abundant in the inorganic nutrients and to preserve much water in soil to conserve the litters.
Wangdol-cho, located 23 km offshore of Hupo in southwest of East Sea, is underwater rock floor, called to Wangdol-Am or Wangdol-Jam and has three tops as Mat-Jam, Middle-Jam and Set-Jam. The composition, abundance, diversity and community structure were investigated in winter and summer in 2002 around Wangdol-cho. The temperature around the Northwest and Southeast part of Wangdol-cho was influenced by the North Korea Cold Current (NKCC) and East Korea Warm Current (EKWC), respectively. Nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentration were higher at the top of Wangdol-cho than other area. A total of 41 genera and 78 species of phytoplankton were identified. The average cell abundance of phytoplankton in winter and summer were $286{\times}10^3\;cells/m^3,\;432{\times}10^3\;cells/m^3$ respectively. The largest community was Bacillariophyta containing 52 taxa. The dominant species were Lauderia anulata and Coscinodiscus spp. which preferred cold water in winter. In contrast, warm water species such as Rhizosolenia stolterfothii and Ceratium spp. were dominant in summer. The average species diversity index of phytoplankton in winter was higher than that in summer. According to dominant species and standing crops, phytoplankton community resulted in a clear separation. One group was western area, which showed low density, and the other was eastern area, which showed the higher density. The abundance and species composition of phytoplankton. were affected by topological characteristics around Wangdol-cho.

We have studied the possibility of removing Anabaena macrospora by injecting copper sulfate ($CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$) into the raw water of a drinking water purification plant. Anabaena macrospora caused the unpleasant geosmin odor of drinking water in August 2001. The cell break-point of A. macrospora was 0.3 mg/L of $CuSO_4$. We were able to reduce the standing crops of A. macrospora effectively because $CuSO_4$ could break A. macrospora selectively. Because 0.3 mg/L of $CuSO_4$ could break both cells and akinetes, it reduced the possibility of a recurrent problem for them to meet a favorable condition. When $CuSO_4$ was injected in the early growth phase of algae and the mixing intensity was high, A. macrospora could be removed most effectively. The odor caused by A. macrospora was sustained for a while without any sudden change of environmental condition. Therefore, we hope that it could shorten the period of obstacle by injecting the optimal amount of 0.3 mg/L of $CuSO_4$. The water quality, alkalinity, conductivity, hardness and pH didn't changed by the injection of $CuSO_4$.
