Numerical Simulation of Air Flow and Gas Dispersion around Obstacles

  • Computations of the mean and turbulence flows over three-dimensional hill of conical shape have implemented. Beside the standard $\kappa-\epsilon$, two other modifications proposed by Detering & Etling and Duynkerke for atmospheric applications were also considered. These predictions were compared with the data of a wind tunnel experiment. From the comparison, it was concluded that all three models predict the mean flow velocities equally well while only the Duynkerke's model accurately predicts the turbulence data statistics. It also concluded that there are large discrepancies between model predictions and the measurements near the ground surface. The flow field, which was obtained by using the Duynkerke's modification, was used to simulate gas dispersion from an upwind source. The calculation results are verified based on the measurement data. Modifications of the turbulent Schmidt number were carried out in order to match the measured results. The code was used to investigate the influence of the recirculation zone behind a building of cubical shape on the transport and dispersion of pollutant.   • The developing Smart UAV in KARI supposes high speed flight as like a conventional plane, as well as vertical takeoff and landing as like a helicopter. Therefore, the air intake system should be designed to provide the sufficient air flow to the engine and the maximum possible total pressure recovery at the engine intake screen over a wide range of flight conditions. For this purpose, we designed the intake system using a pilot type intake model and plenum chamber In this paper, we designed the intake model and analyzed the performance of designed intake system using the general-purpose commercial CFD code, CFD-ACE+ For 3-D calculation, we generated mesh using the unstructured gird and used $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model. The analysis results of the total pressure variation and the velocity distribution was illustrated in this paper. The pressure recovery and distortion coefficient at a plane coincident with the compressor inlet were calculated and streamline variation through the intake system was investigated at the worst condition as well as the standard flight condition.

예조건화기법을 이용한 유동장 및 반응유동장의 계산 (Computation of Non-reacting and Reacting Flow-Fields Using a Preconditioning Method)

  • In this paper, non-reacting and reacting flowfields were computed using a preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver. The preconditioning technique of Merkle et al. and TVD scheme or Chakravarthy and Osher was employed and the results obtained using developed code have a good agreement with the previous results and experimental data. The preconditioned Wavier-Stokes equation set with low Reynolds number $\kappa-\epsilon$ equation and species continuity equations, are discretized with strongly implicit manner and time integrated with LU-SSOR scheme. For the purpose of treating unsteady problem the duel-time stepping scheme was employed. For the validation of the code in incompressible flow regime, steady driven square cavity flow was considered and calculation result shows reasonably good agreement with the result of incompressible code. Shock wave/boundary layer interaction problem was considered to show the shock capturing performance of preconditioned-TVD scheme. To validate unsteady flow, acoustic oscillation problem was calculated, and supersonic premix flame of $H_2$-air reaction problem which is calculated with turbulence model, 9-species/18-reaction step reaction model, shows reasonable agreement with the previous results. As a result, the preconditioning method has an advantage to calculate incompressible and compressible flow through one code and preconditioned solver easily developed from standard compressible code with minor efforts. But additional computational time and computer memory is required due to preconditioning matrix.

초음속 노즐 내 2차 분사 slot 개수에 따른 유동 특성 변화 (Effect of Secondary Flow Injection on Flow Charncteristics in 3-Dimensional Supersonic Nozzle)

  • The advantages of the SITVC(secondary injection thrust vector control) technique over mechanical thrust vector systems include a reduction in both the nozzle weight and complexity due to the elimination of the mechanical actuators that are used in conventional vectoring. Computational study is performed to understand the fluidic thrust vectoring control of an axisymmetric nozzle, in which secondary gas injection is made in the divergent section of the nozzle. The nozzle has a design mach number 3. The effect of injection hole number and shape of secondary jet on the mach number distribution of SITVC were investigated. The standard ${\kappa}$ - ${\epsilon}$ turbulence model solved the complex three-dimensional nozzle flows perturbed by the secondary gas jet. The numerical code was validated by experiment. The results showed that the mach number distribution of circular and square nozzle are similar each other. As number of second injection hole increasing, a effect of deflection was decreased.
