In this paper, We studied the change of surface and variation of elements on both electrodes of hydrogen generator of alkaline electrolysis in use of FE-SEM and SIMS. We used the stainless steel 316(600 ${\mu}m$) as electrode in condition of 25%KOH, $60^{\circ}C$ Temperature. The results show that the intensity of elements (C, Si, P, S, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Mo) of Positive Electrode are decreased as much as about $10^1{\sim}10^3 $than the original electrode. Thickness of Positive Electrode is decreased about 40 ${\mu}m$ after chemical reaction. The negative electrode, however, shows a slight variation in the intensity of elements (C, Si, P, Fe, Ni, Mn, Mo) but Change of thickness and surface' shape of electrode show nothing after chemical reaction. The change in thickness and variation of Stainless Steel 316 cause the lifetime of electrode to be shorted. We also observed hydrogen, oxygen, potassium in both electrodes. Especially, The potassium is increased in proportional with depth of positive electrode. this means the concentration of alkali solutions is changed. and so we have to supply alkaline solution to generator in order to produce same quantity of hydrogen gas continuously. we hope that this study gives a foundation to develop the electrode for hydrogen generator of alkaline electrolysis.
Pt counter electrode based on flexible metal for dye-sensitized solar cells(DSCs) has been investigated. Photovoltaic structures on lightweight substrates have several advantages over the heavy glass-based structures in both terrestrial and space applications. Cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy were used to investigate electrochemical properties of Pt counter electrode both FTO glass and SUS sheet substrate. The DSCs composed of the counter electrode based on a stainless steel substrate has obtained conversion efficiencies comparable to that based on the conducting glass. The counter electrode based on the stainless steel substrate has the merit of improving the fill factor and conversion efficiency of the DSCs by reducing its internal resistance.
In the micro electrochemical machining (ECM), unfavorable oxide/passive layer formation and overall corrosion of electrodes must be prevented. Generally, the stainless steel electrode corrodes, passivates or dissolves in the electrochemical cell according to the electrode potential. Therefore, the electrode must maintain stable potential. The stable electrode potentials of tool and workpiece were determined with the potentiodynamic polarization test and verified experimentally from the point of machining stability and machined surface quality.
Prevention of crevice corrosion was studied for STS 304 stainless steel using a Mg-alloy galvanic anode in solutions with various specific resistivity. The crevice corrosion and corrosion protection characteristics of the steel was investigated by the electrochemical polarization and galvanic corrosion tests. Experimental results show that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel does not occur in solutions of high specific resistivity, but it occurs in solutions of low specific resistivity like in solutions with resistivities of 30, 60 and $115{\Omega}{\cdot}m$. With decreasing specific resistivity of the solution, the electrode potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice is lowered. The potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice after coupling is cathodically polarized more by decreasing specific resistivity indicating that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel is prevented by the Mg-alloy galvanic anode.
Recently, STS 301L joints of side panels to frames for stainless steel rolling stock have been made out by using existing welding methods including Resistance Spot Welding, Laser Welding and Arc Welding. Most of the processes were jointed by spot welding because it is faster at welding and comparatively less expensive for investment in welding facilities than other methods. During spot welding, however, indentation of the metal surface was made due to pressure and melting property of welding. Moreover, since the melting metal was forced to periphery of the plate as indentation was made, sheet separation, which cracked apart between jointed sheets, was carried out. A slight deformation which resulted from sheet separation deteriorated the emotional quality of railway vehicles. This paper suggests that by processing conventional spot electrode tip appropriately, melting metal is able to push up around the processed part (Hollow Spot Electrode Tip) and prevent from being dislodged from first place to periphery. Consequently, sheet separation is remarkably decreased. Also, the emotional quality of appearance of stainless steel rolling stock is enhanced considerably.
The Plasma Arc Cutting Method using high density and hight temperature beam is well applicable to the cutting of the nonferrous metal (Al alloy ) and stainless steel which are unable to be cut by the use of the oxy-fuel gas. This study focalizes on the cutting phenomena of the plate of (mm) thickness, since the cutting phenomena of thick plates have been rather thoroughly studied. In this study the cutting groove, adhesive phenomena of dross, surface roughness were measured according to the variation of cutting speed and compared with the case of mild steel plates. The result showed that the kerf width variation of Al alloy was similar to the case of mild steel, while that of the stainless steel differed from the mild steel. In the adhesive phenomena of dross, 6(mm) thick plates of Al alloy showed a difference from those of thick plates, but the stainless steel was similar to thick plates. The surface roughness variation of Al alloy wias minimum at 67 cm/min, while that of stainless steel was at 30cm/min.
In this work, mechanical characteristics of stainless steel diaphragm have been studied as a potential robust substrate and a diaphragm material for micromachined devices. Lamination process techniques combined with traditional micromachining processes have been adopted as suitable fabrication technologies. To illustrate these principles, capacitive pressure sensors based on a stainless steel diaphragm have been designed, fabricated and characterized. The fabrication process for stainless steel micromachined devices keeps the membrane and substrate being at the environment of 8.65MPa pressure and $175^{\circ}C$ for a half hour and then subsequently cooled to $25^{\circ}C$. Each sensor uses a stainless steel substrate, a laminated stainless steel film as a suspended movable plate and a fixed, surface micromachined back electrode of electroplated nickel. The finite element method is adopted to investigate residual stresses formed in the process. Besides, out-of-plane deflections are calculated under pressures on the diaphragm. The sensitivity of the device fabricated using these technologies is 9.03 ppm $kPa^{-1}$ with a net capacitance change of 0.14 pF over a range 0$\sim$180 kPa.
