  • Staggered nested designs are the most popular class of unbalanced nested designs in practical fields. The most important features of the staggered nested design are that it has a very simple open-ended structure and each sum of squares in the analysis of variance has almost the same degrees of freedom. Based on the features, a class of unbalanced nested designs which is generalized of the staggered nested design is proposed. Some of the generalized staggered nested designs are shown to be more efficient than the staggered nested design in estimating some of variance components and their linear combinations.

  • This paper presents the idea of staggered voting for the efficient TMR implementation of shift register chains for improving the yield of Poly-Si TFT-LCD driving circuits. The paper discusses the characteristic features of staggered voting and performs a quantitative evaluation of its effectiveness. Staggered voting allows us to improve the reliability of a single-voter TMR chain significantly when the probability of a voter failure is not negligible.

  • This paper summarised and re-examined the theoretical basis of the commonly used design rule developed by Cochrane in the 1920s to consider staggered bolt holes in tension members, i.e., the s2/4g rule. The rule was derived assuming that the term two times the bolt hole diameter (2d0) in Cochrane's original equation could be neglected, and assuming a value of 0.5 for the fractional deduction of a staggered hole in assessing the net section area. Although the s2/4g rule generally provides good predictions of the staggered net section area, the above-mentioned assumptions used in developing the rule are doubtful, in particular for a connection with a small gauge-to-bolt-hole diameter (g/d0) ratio. It was found that the omission of 2d0 in Cochrane's original equation appreciably overestimates the net section area of a staggered bolted connection with a small g/d0 ratio. However, the assumed value of 0.5 for the fractional deduction of a staggered hole underestimates the staggered net section area for small g/d0 ratios. To improve the applicability of the above two assumptions, a modified design equation, which covers a full range of g/d0 ratio, was proposed to accurately predict the staggered net section area and was validated by the existing test data from the literature and numerical data derived from this study. Finally, a reliability analysis of the test and numerical data was conducted, and the results showed that the reliability of the modified design equation for evaluating the net section resistance of staggered bolted connections can be achieved with the partial factor of 1.25.

  • In designing a video-on-demand (VoD) system, one of the major challenges is how to reduce the viewer's waiting time maintaining a given bandwidth allocation and how to reduce the client's buffer requirements. To solve these problems, many VoD schemes were proposed. However, most VoD schemes require managing many segments of a video, frequency channel hopping, and using many channels at the same time. Therefore, to the complexity is a barrier to implementation. In this paper, we propose a fast staggered broadcasting scheme which has a simple structure and substantially improved VoD efficiency. The numerical results demonstrate that the viewer's waiting time of the fast staggered broadcasting scheme is close to the fast broadcasting scheme and the buffer requirements of this can be adapt for demanding rate by adjusting the short front part of a video sizes.

  • A comparative research on the traditional standard wood walls and other light-frame wood walls is necessary to expand the base of wooden buildings and improve consumer satisfaction. Therefore, in this research we looked for new possibilities through comparison of performance between standard wood wall and newly presented staggered stud wood wall. First, the strength characteristics of staggered stud wood walls were evaluated and the those of standard wood walls were compared. The ultimate load of the standard wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall, because the cross section of the wood making up the standard wood wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall. However, the statistical analysis between the two groups didn't showed a significance of 95% confidence level. This means that, staggered stud wood walls have shown the possibility of replacing the standard wood wall. Because the cross-section of the stud in the staggered stud wood walls is smaller than that of the standard wall, the material can be saved. Therefore, staggerd wood stud wall is judged to be more economical than the standard wall. In addition, since the area of the insulation also increases, improvement of the heat bridge is also expected.

  • In this paper, the flow properties of staggered labyrinth seals are investigated. Leakage flowrates and pressure distributions are calculated for this seal. Then the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated. The results are compared to the results of the some other papers.

  • In this study the seismic risk assessments of six- and twelve-story staggered wall system structures with three different structural variations were performed. The performances of staggered wall structures with added columns along the central corridor and the structures with their first story walls replaced by beams and columns were compared with those of the regular staggered wall structures. To this end incremental dynamic analyses were carried out using twenty two pairs of earthquake records to obtain the failure probabilities for various intensity of seismic load. The seismic risk for each damage state was computed based on the fragility analysis results and the probability of occurrence of earthquake ground motions. According to the analysis results, it was observed that the structures with added columns along the central corridor showed lowest probability of failure and seismic risk. The structures with their first story walls replaced by beams and columns showed lowest margin for safety.

  • Leakage reduction through annular type labyrinth seals of steam turbine is necessary for enhancing their efficiency. In this study, modified geometry of the original combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal has been suggested and numerical analysis for leakage prediction has been carried out for the modified-combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal both based on bulk-flow model and using the CFD code FLUENT. The theoretical analysis based on bulk-flow model yields leakage reduction of the modified combination type staggered labyrinth seal by about 11%. Comparing with the result of Bulk-flow model analysis, the leakage result of CFD analysis shows reasonable agreement within 9.8% error.

  • The basic equations are derived for the analysis of a staggered labyrinth gas seal which are generally used in high performance compressors and steam turbines. The Bulk-flow is assumed for a single cavity control volume and the flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in circumferential direction. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses in the single cavity control volume. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about a centered position. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients of the staggered labyrinth gas seal. Theoretical results of leakage and rotordynamic characteristics for the staggered labyrinth gas seal are compared with those of the plain seal and see-through labyrinth seal.

  • The characteristics of flow and heat transfer in the heat exchanger of heat pipes with fins have been studied numerically for cooling enhancement of electronic components of KTX (Korea Train eXpress). Numerical analysis and methodology have been conformed by comparing the experimental results for inlined array of heat pipes. The staggered arrangement of heat pipes has been proposed in order to achieve heat transfer enhancement. As results, the geometry change to the staggered array is conformed to increase the heat transfer of the system accompanied by an increase of pressure drop. The current results of friction factor and Colburn j factor are presented in terms of Reynolds number and staggered distance, and are expected to use for design and manufacture of such a system.
