The electromagnetic characteristics of FCEVs (fuel cell electric vehicles) are much different from the existing combustion engine cars as well as hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and pure electric vehicles due to the high voltage/current generated by a fuel cell stack which uses a compressed hydrogen gas reacted with oxygen. To operate fuel cell stack efficiently, BOP (Balance of Plant) is essential. BOP systems are used many not only for motors in water pump, air blower, and hydrogen recycling pump but also inverters for these motors. Since these systems or components are connected by high voltage cables, EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) analysis for high voltage/current cable is the most important element to prevent the possible electric functional safety errors. In this paper, electromagnetic fields of high current/voltage cable for FCEVs is studied. From numerical analysis results, time harmonic magnetic field strength of high current/voltage cable have difference of 20~28 dB according to phase. EMI result considered ground effect of FECV at 10 m shows difference of 14.5 dB at 30 MHz and 2.8 dB at 230 MHz compared with general cable.
In PRAM applications, the devices can be made for both binary and multi-state storage. The ability to attain intermediate stages comes either from the fact that some chalcogenide materials can exist in configurations that range from completely amorphous to completely crystalline or from designing device structure such a way that mimics multiple phase chase phenomena in single cell. We have designed stack-structured phase change memory cell which operates as multi-state storage. Amorphous $Ge_xTe_{100-x}$ chalcogenide materials were stacked and a diffusion barrier was chosen for each stack layers. The device is operated by crystallizing each chalcogenide material as sequential manner from the bottom layer to the top layer. The amplitude of current pulse and the duration of pulse width was fixed and number of pulses were controlled to change overall resistance of the phase change memory cell. To optimize operational performance the thickness of each chalcogenide was controlled based on simulation results.

In this paper the effects of inverter ripple currents to the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Stack (PEMFCS) is analyzed by the impedance model. The proposed method employs the frequency analysis technique to derive an equivalent impedance model of the fuel cell stack and the effects of the inverter ripple current are investigated. The calculated results m then verified by means of experiments on commercially available PEMFCSs. The experimental results show that the ripple current can contribute up to 10[%] reduction in the available output power.
In this research, $5\times5cm^2$ unit cells were fabricated via liquid condensation process and uniaxial pressing followed by the screen printing of electrolyte and cathode layer. The SOFC stack was assembled with unit cells, gasket-type sealant and metal interconnect. The stack was designed to have a single column with internal-manifold and cross-flow type gas-channels. The SOFC stack produced 15 W, which is $50\%$ of the maximum power being expected from the maximum power density of the unit cell. Controlling factors for the proper operation of the SOFC stack and other designing factors of stack manifold and gas channels were discussed.
The Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has been developing planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and power systems for combined heat and power (CHP) units. The R&D work includes solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) materials investigation, design and fabrication of single cells and stacks, and kW class SOFC CHP system development. Anode supported cells composed of Ni-YSZ/FL/YSZ/LSCF were enlarged up to $15{\times}15\;cm^2$ and stacks were manufactured using $10{\times}10\;cm^2$ cells and metallic interconnects such as ferritic stainless steel. The first-generation system had a 37-cell stack and an autothermal reformer for use with city gas. The system showed maximum stack power of about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ and was able to recover heat of $0.57{\sim}1.2\;kW_{th}$ depending on loaded current by making hot water. The second-generation system was composed of an improved 48-cell stack and a prereformer (or steam reformer). The thermal management subsystem design including heat exchangers and insulators was also improved. The second-generation system was successfully operated without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ with hydrogen and $1.2\;kW_{e,DC}$ with city. The system also recuperated heat of about $1.1\;kW_{th}$ by making hot water. Recently KEPRI manufactured a 2kW class SOFC stack and a system by scaling up the second-generation 1kW system and will develop a 5kW class CHP system by 2010.

In this study, a fuel cell system model for ship power was developed and verified by comparing the experimental results obtained by supplying pure oxygen. To verify the proposed model, the fuel cell output characteristics when oxygen was supplied were compared with those when air was supplied using an air compressor. In addition, the effect of the change in the thermal properties of the fuel cell system on the output of the stack was examined. Within the experimental range of this study, when pure oxygen was supplied as the cathode supply gas, the calculated and experimental voltages and outputs obtained through modeling were almost the same over the entire load range. When air was supplied instead of oxygen for the cathode supply at a constant load of 560 A, each stack voltage was approximately 14 V, the stack output was approximately 8 kW, and the stack efficiency was approximately 3 %. It was confirmed that the overall system efficiency was reduced by approximately 8 %. Among the thermal properties examined in this study, the heat transfer coefficient of the coolant to the stack was found to have the greatest effect on the output of the stack.
We developed a dynamic model of PEM fuel cell system which can analyze its transient response to dynamic load current. System components such as compressor, air cooler, humidifier, and stack were modeled based on their dynamic equations and performance maps by using Matlab Simulink platform. Through this simulation model, dynamic characteristics of fuel cell system including oxygen excess rat io, stack voltage, and system efficiency were shown. In addition to that, we briefly analyzed the humidity effect on cathode pressure and system efficiency, expecting that this model can be further used to optimize fuel cell system parameters just like operating pressure and temperature, humidity and oxygen excess ratio.

Fuel cells convert a fuel together with oxygen in a highly efficient electrochemical reaction to electricity and water. Since the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell stack dose not generate any noise, Fuel cell systems are expected to operated much quieter than combustion engines. However, the tonal noise and the broad band noise caused by a centrifugal compressor and an electric motor cause which is required to feed the ambient air to the cathode of the fuel cell stack with high pressure. In this study, the multi-camber perforated muffler is used to reduce noise. We propose optimized muffler model using an axiomatic design method that optimizes the parameters of perforated muffler while keeping the volume of muffler minimized.

FCEV uses electric energy generated from the reaction between Hydrogen and Oxygen in fuel cell stack as driving force. As fossil fuels are exhausted, fuel cell is regarded as a potent substitute for next generation energy source, and thus, most of car-makers make every efforts to develop fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). In addition, fuel cell is also beneficial in aspect of environment, because only clean water is produced during chemical reaction process instead of harmful exhausted gas. Generally, Hydrogen is supplied from high-pressured fuel tank, and air blower (or compressor) supplies Oxygen by pressurizing ambient air. Air blower which is driven by high speed motor consumes about $7{\sim}8%$ of energy generated from fuel cell stack. Therefore, the efficiency of an air blower is directly linked with the overall performance of FCEV. This study will present developing process of an air blower and its consisting parts respectively.
