  • When input parameters like gas volume or load of the fuel cell system is changed, the fuel cell system can generate transient voltage disturbances. In this paper, a fuel cell system with Z-source inverter and ultracapacitors for voltage disturbance compensation is proposed. The structure of Z-source inverter is simple. It has unique features that can boost/buck input voltage with a DC/DC converter using only a modified switching pattern. The characteristics of the proposed topologies for the fuel cell system with Z-source inverter and ultracapacitors are analyzed using simulation, and verified by experiments. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of operating with stable response to the system transient and voltage disturbances.

  • A problem with virtual synchronous generator (VSG) systems is that they are difficult to operate stably with photovoltaic (PV) power as the DC side. With this problem in mind, a PV-VSG control strategy considering the dynamic characteristics of the DC side is proposed after an in-depth analysis of the dynamic characteristics of photovoltaic power with a parallel energy-storage capacitor. The proposed PV-VSG automatically introduces DC side voltage control for the VSG when the PV enters into an unstable working interval, which avoids the phenomenon where an inverter fails to work due to a DC voltage sag. The stability of the original VSG and the proposed PV-VSG were compared by a root locus analysis. It is found that the stability of the PV-VSG is more sensitive to the inertia coefficient J than the VSG, and that a serious power oscillation may occur. According to this, a new rotor model is designed to make the inertial coefficient automatically change to adapt to the operating state. Experimental results show that the PV-VSG control strategy can achieve stable operation and maximum power output when the PV output power is insufficient.

  • In this study, research and a demonstration for applying DC distribution systems to ships as an environmental and energy conservation solution in domestic and foreign countries were actively carried out. In order to apply a generator to a DC distribution system, a variable speed engine was used. Both engine speed and fuel consumption were reduced. In this paper, a DC generator for DC distribution was constructed using a diesel generator, a generator controller, a governor, and an AVR. A system configuration method for a generator, power quality test, and the power characteristics of a variable speed generator were analyzed. The voltage (250 - 440 VAC) and frequency (34 - 60 Hz) of the variable speed generator were set to 60 - 100 % of the rated value, and the engine was set to operate from 1100 - 1800 rpm. It was confirmed that the voltage, current, and frequency of the generator output fluctuated in a stable manner according to the power amount when changing the engine speed of the generator according to the load variation.

  • In this paper, a new mode changeable asymmetric full bridge dc/dc converter is proposed to solve the freewheeling current problem of the conventional zero voltage switching(ZVS) phase shift full bridge(PSFB) dc/dc converter of low output voltage and high output current applications. The proposed converter is operated as an asymmetric full bridge converter when the duty cycle is less than 50% and active clamp full bridge converter when the duty cycle is greater than 50%. As a result, since its freewheeling current is eliminated, the conduction loss is lower than that of the conventional ZVS PSFB dc/dc converter. Moreover, ZVS of all power switches can be ensured along a wide load ranges and output current ripple is very small. Therefore, high efficiency of the proposed converter can be achieved. Especially since its operation mode is changed to the active clamp full bridge converter during hold up time and can be operated with 50~100% duty ratio, it can produce the stable output voltage along wide input voltage range. The operational principles, theoretical analysis and design considerations are presented. To confirm the operation, validity and features of the proposed converter, experimental results from a 1.2kW($400V_{dc}/12V_{dc}$) prototype are presented.

  • Since DC has no zero point, an arc occurs when the DC circuit breaker performs a shutdown operation. In this case, a fatal accident may occur in the circuit breaker or in the grid, depending on the magnitude of the arc. Therefore, the shutdown performance and the reliability of the circuit breaker are important in the commercialization of HVDC. In this study, a superconducting LC circuit breaker was proposed to improve the performance and the reliability of the DC circuit breaker. The superconducting LC circuit breaker applied a superconducting coil to the inductor of the existing LC circuit breaker. Other than limiting the initial fault current, it also creates a stable zero point in the event of a fault current. To verify this, simulation was performed through EMTDC/PSCAD. Furthermore, the superconducting LC circuit breaker was compared with the LC circuit breaker with a normal coil. As a result, it was found that the LC circuit breaker with the superconducting coil limited the initial fault current further by approximately 12 kA compared to the LC circuit breaker with a normal coil. This reduced the arc extinguish time by approximately 0.16 sec, thereby decreasing the elctrical power burden on the circuit breaker.

  • In addition to the stack that directly generates electricity by the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, the fuel cell power generation system has a reformer that generates hydrogen from various fuels such as methanol and natural gas. It also consists of a power converter that converts the DC voltage generated in the stack into a stable AC voltage. The fuel cell output of such a system is direct current, and in order to be used at home, an inverter device that converts it into alternating current through a power converter is required. In addition, a DC-DC step-up converter is used to boost the fuel cell voltage to about 30~70V, which is the inverter operating voltage, to about 380V. The DC-DC step-up converter is a DC voltage variable device that exists between the fuel cell output and the inverter. Accordingly, since a constant output voltage of the converter is generated in response to a change in the output voltage of the fuel cell, the inverter can receive constant power regardless of the voltage change of the fuel cell. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss the detailed hardware design of the full-bridge converter, which is the main power source of the inverter that receives the fuel cell output voltage (30~70V) as an input and is applied to the grid among the members of the fuel cell power generation system.

  • $\textrm{WO}_3$ semiconductive film, which is known to have a sensitivity on $\textrm{NO}_X$ gas was prepared on 8YSZ (8% Yttria stabilized $\textrm{ZrO}_2$) ionic conductor substrate that has oxygen ion pumping effect. Microstructure and electrical properity, especially $\textrm{NO}_X$ sensitivity as a function of DC voltage applied to 8YSZ substrate was examined. When the $\textrm{WO}_3$ film was annealed, it showed amorphous structure, while crystallization was occurred at $600^{\circ}$C revealing orthorhombic phase of $\textrm{WO}_3$. As the annealing temperature increases, (111) and (001) peaks of $\textrm{WO}_3$ film was enhanced. At $400^{\circ}C$ when DC voltage was applied, comparing with no DC bias, more stable and large response characteristics was showed, and the best sensitivity was observed at 2V. Recovery characteristics of NO gas was much better that that of $\textrm{NO}_2$ gas.

  • This paper investigates a new sensorless control appling a virtual flux oriented vector control without the line voltage sensor for the power factor correction of 3 phase PWM converter. The DC output voltage is controlled by applying the kalman filter algorithm for the virtual flux estimation and the synchronous phase is obtained by using the estimated virtual flux equation based on kalman filter. This method is used to reduce the calculation time of the system and obtain a stable control that the input current including the harmonics and the noise is improved. The proposed system implement PFC algorithm in the variable region of DC output voltage. It can obtain the unity power factor, and can precisely control the DC output voltage in the load variation and in the variable voltage range. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified through simulation and experiment.
