  • An experimental study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of shock waves on the supersonic hydrogen-air jet flames stabilized in the Mach 2.5 model scramjet combustor. This experiment was the first reacting flow experiment interacting with shock waves. Two identical $10^{\cire}$ wedges were mounted on the diverging sidewalls of the combustor in order to produce oblique shock waves that interacted with the flame. Schlieren visualization pictures, wall static pressures, and combustion efficiency at two different air stagnation temperatures were measured and compared to corresponding flames without shock wave-flame interaction. It was observed that shock waves significantly altered the shape of supersonic jet flames, but had different effects on combustion efficiency depending on air temperatures. At the higher air stagnation temperature and higher fuel flow rates, combustion of efficiency showed a better result.

  • The purpose of this research is to determine the efficiency of impregnation using phenol formaldehyde resin to enhance Falcataria wood's stability and better mechanical properties. Impregnation process was carried out after moisture content stabilized at 12% on samples with a dimension of 20 mm × 20 mm × 300 mm at various concentrations and pressure time. Dimensional stability was evaluated by thickness swelling (TS) and anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) and the young's modulus was conducted according to BS 573. The mechanical properties and dimensional stability of impregnated wood were evaluated. Dimensional stability and mechanical properties of Falcataria wood were successfully increased after impregnation. PF impregnation can improve the mechanical properties and the density from 0.26 g/㎤ to 0.30 g/㎤ even with only 10% of weight percent grain. Dimensional stability increases with increasing resin concentration and time pressure. The highest increase in mechanical properties was found at a higher concentration of PF. The penetration of PF into the wood's cell darkens the color of impregnated wood.

  • In this study, in order to increase solid content of coal water fuel (CWF), various experimental parameters (i.e., coal type, additive, particle size distribution, drying method) were evaluated. To investigate the drying method, specimen is compared to using flash dry, fluidized bed dry and oil deposit stabilized coal. Difference of the solid content between low rank coal and high rank coal in this case indicate that high rank coal exhibits more higher than 20% of the solid cotent. And specimen for dispersibility was prepared by using dispersing agent of 4 types. As a result, using the dispersing agent was shown 5% higher in sold content than the case of not using the dispersing agent. Efficiency of CWF was improved by using fine coal of 80% in the particle size distribution of coal. Result of CWF using drying methods of 3 types, oil deposit stabilized (ODS) coal dried and stabilized was effective 12% higher in sold content than raw coal.

  • The binary oxide adsorbent using Fe and Mn (Fe-Mn) has been prepared by precipitation method to enhance the removal of phosphate. Different amounts of chitosan, a natural organic polymer, were used during preparation of Fe-Mn as a stabilizer to protect an aggregation of Fe-Mn particles. The optimal amount of chitosan has been determined considering the separation of the Fe-Mn particles by gravity from solution and highest removal efficiency of phosphate (Fe-Mn10). The application of Fe-Mn10 increased removal efficiency at least 15% compared to bare Fe-Mn. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum uptake (qm) and affinity coefficient (b) were calculated to be 184 and 240 mg/g, and 4.28 and 7.30 L/mg for Fe-Mn and Fe-Mn10, respectively, indicating 30% and 70% increase. The effect of pH showed that the removal efficiency of phosphate was decrease with increase of pH regardless of type of adsorbent. The enhanced removal efficiency for Fe-Mn10 was maintained in entire range of pH. In the kinetics, both adsorbents obtained 70% removal efficiency within 5 min and 90% removal efficiency was achieved at 1 h. Pseudo second order (PSO) kinetic model showed higher correlation of determination (R2), suggesting chemisorption was the primary phosphate adsorption for both Fe-Mn and Fe-Mn10.

  • On the assessment results of the non-point source pollutant removability of bio-block using waste sewage sludge, at the reactor's initial operation stage, the removal efficiency of COD was slightly unstable. However, after the reactor was stabilized, the COD removal efficiency was higher in the reactor filled with bio-blocks compared to the reactor filled with broken stones. In terms of nitrogen and phosphorus, their removal efficiency was unstable at the initial stage of the reactor operation. This phenomenon was investigated through the bio-block elution experiments. Results indicated that nitrogen and phosphorus were eluted from the bio-blocks affecting their removal at the initial operation. Furthermore, based on elution tests conducted after the dry ashing of the waste sewage sludge, part of the nitrogen and phosphorus was eluted similar to the bio-block elution test results, although considerable amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus were reduced compared to the sludge cake. Prior to the use of the waste sewage sludge bio-blocks as a filter medium to remove non-point source pollutants, a stabilization period of 10 days was required. After the stabilization process, results showed similar characteristics as general aggregates. Moreover, to use the bio-block as a filter medium for the non-point pollutant removal, the filling ratio of 75% was the most suitable as it resulted in the highest nitrogen removal efficiency after the stabilization. The results of this study suggested that waste sewage sludge can be suitably recycled as a mixed raw material for the bio-blocks, with satisfactory application as a filter medium in artificial wetlands, stormwater runoff problems, stream water pollutants to eliminate non-point source pollutants.

  • Hexavalent chromium-contaminated soils are encounted at many unregulated discharge and improper handling of wastes from electroplating, leather tanning, steelmaking, corrosion control, and wood preservation industries. Contamination of hexavalent chromium in the soil is a major concern because of its toxicity and threat to human life and environment. Current technologies for hexavalent chromium-contaminated soil remediation are usually costly and/or cannot permanently prohibit the toxic element from entering into the biosphere. Thus, as an alternative technique, immobilization is seen as a cost-effective and promising remediation technology that may reduce the leachable potential of hexavalent chromium. The purpose of this paper is to develope an immobilization technique for the formation of the geochemically stabilized hexavalent chromium-contaminated soil from the reactions of labile soil hexavalent chromium forms with the added soluble phosphate and chromium reducing agent. From the liquid phase experiment, reaction order of chromium reducing agent, soluble phosphate, alkali solution shows the best removal efficiency of 95%. In addition, actual soil phase experiment demonstrates up to 97.9% removal efficiency with 1:1 molar ratio of chromium reducing agent and soluble phosphate. These results provide evidence for the potential use of soluble phosphate and chromium reducing agent for the hexavalent chromium-contaminated soil remediation.

  • Uptake efficiencies of PCB 153 in fathead minnow through food chain of sediment-midge-fish were evaluated. Contaminated fish food, the midge Chironomus plumosus was prepared by exposing to sediments with PCB 153. We could harvest the midges with body PCB 153 levels of ∼ 1.0 mg/g and ∼ 10.0 mg/g, respectively, in 2 wk of exposure. PCB 153 level in fish fed with midge of 10.0 mg/g PCB 153 (high-dose group) reached its highest at 11.2 mg/g after 30 d of exposure. However, PCB level in fish fed with midge of 1.0 mg/g PCB 153 (low-dose group) kept increasing following first order rate kinetics until the end of exposure (38 d). When the fish food was changed to the uncontaminated ones, the fish body PCB levels were stabilized in ∼ 3 wk. The uptake efficiency in high-dose fish group was 37%, whereas low-dose group was 55%. Uptake efficiencies in fathead minnows were notably lower than that of pike (∼ 70%). This finding suggests that the uptake efficiency of this PCB congener may depend on the amount of the PCB in diet.

  • This study analyzed the changes in the concentrations of organic matters in constructed treatment wetlands, coming from discharge water from a sewage treatment plant and non-point pollutant sources during rainfall events. At the beginning of a rainfall event, a massive amount of particulate organic matter flowed in, and was removed from the sedimentation basin (S1, S2); dissolved organic matter was removed after passing through stepwise treatment processes in the wetland. During dry period in the wetland, the removal efficiency rate for COD and TOC was -21 and -7%, respectively; during the rainfall event, the removal efficiency rate for COD and TOC were 47 and 43%, respectively. The highly-concentrated organic matters that flowd in at the beginning of the rainfall event was stabilized by various structures in the wetland before water discharge. Cyanobacteria blooms annually at the confluence of the So-ok stream and Daecheong Lake. Therefore, it is expected that the wetland will contribute significantly to reducing cyanobacteria and improving water quality in the area.

  • The efficiency and the optical properties of the yellow organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) were significantly affected by the existence of the multiple quantum well (MQW) structures consisting of N, N'- bis-(1-naphthyl)-N, N'-diphenyl-1,1-biphenyl-4,4'- diamine(NPB)/5,6,11,12 - tetraphenylnaphthacene (rubrene). The maximum efficiency and the luminance of OLEDs with 3-periods of the NPB/rubrene MQWs at 41.6 $mA/cm^2$ were 3.66 cd/A and 1524 $cd/m^2$, respectively, and their Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates were (0.34, 0.55), which indicates a yellow color. These results indicate that the efficiencies of the OLEDs by using MQW emitting layers can be improved.

  • For the first time in Bangladesh, a bench scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) unit was tested in treating a textile wastewater in the industry premises of EOS Textile Mills LTD, Dhaka for three months. The performance of the unit was compared with that of the conventional activated sludge treatment plant, which is in operation in the same premises. The COD and BOD removal efficiency of the MBR unit reached to around 90% and 80% respectively in 20 days whereas the removal efficiency of the conventional treatment plant was as low as 40-50% and 38-40% respectively. The outlet COD and the BOD level for the MBR unit remained stable in spite of the fluctuation in the feed value, while the conventional effluent treatment plant (ETP) failed to keep any stabilized level. The performance of the MBR unit was much superior to that of the functional ETP and the water treated by the MBR system can meet disposal standard.
