  • In this study, the applicability of microalgae was evaluated for eco-friendly decontamination of cesium-137 (Cs-137) and strontium-90 (Sr-90), which are radioactive nuclides contained in radioactive waste. The monolithic radioactive solution used in the experiment was manufactured at a concentration of 1.5 Bq/mL Cs-137 and 1.0 Bq/mL Sr-90 by diluting a standard radioactive solution and distilled water. This experiment used two types of microalgae, Chlorella Vulgaris was used for Sr-90 decontamination and Hematococcus pluvialis for Cs-137 decontamination. The experimental method is to put the microalgae cultured for 2 weeks into a bottle with a semi-permeable membrane, and then put the bottle in which the microalgae was put into the manufactured radioactive solution, so that the microalgae and the radioactive solution react through the semi-permeable membrane for 48 hours. For the radioactivity concentration analysis of each sample, a gamma-ray nuclide analyzer was used for Cs-137, a γ-ray isotope, and a Liquid Scintillation Count(LSC) was used f or Sr-90, a β-ray isotope. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that about 88.0 % of Cs-137 and about 89.7 % of Sr-90 could be decontaminated, and about 98.6 % of Sr-90 was finally able to be decontaminated by the two-stage decontamination method.

  • A Pot experiment was conducted to study the uptake of $Sr^{90}$ by rice plants in five different types of paddy soils and its distribution in these plants as a function of the age of the rice. The uptake of $Sr^{90}$ by rice plants increased with the growth of the aboveground mass of the plants from the planting period, but $Sr^{90}$ content per unit of dry matter decreased as the organic mass of the plants increased during the vegetative growing period, except for the time of ripening. The content of Ca and $Sr^{90}$ in rice plants was higher in the stem and leaves than in grain parts in general. However, Ca content was decreased in the stem and increased in the grain part with the growth of the rice plant ; but $Sr^{90}$ content was increased in the leaves and decreased in the stem and grain parts.

  • The effects of the major cations ($Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$, $Na^+$), complex-forming anions ($SO_4{^{2-}}$, $HCO_3{^-}$), and solution pH on the adsorption of $^{137}Cs$ and $^{90}Sr$ by kaolinite in groundwater chemistry were investigated. Three-dimensional Kd modelling designed by a statistical method was attempted to compare the relative effect among hydrated radii, charge and concentration of competing cations on the adsorption of Cs and Sr. The modelling results indicate that the hydrated radii of competing cations is the most important factor, and then their charges and concentrations are also important factors in order. The property of zeta potential of kaolinite particles was discussed in terms of the amphoteric reactions of a kaolinite surface affecting the adsorption of Cs and Sr. The ionic strength of competing cations on the adsorption of Cs and Sr exerts a greater effect than the solution pH. The sorption behaviour of Sr on kaolinite is also highly dependent on the concentration of bicarbonate. The speciation of Sr and the saturation state of a secondary phase were thermodynamically calculated by a computer program, WATEQ4F. This indicates that the change in solution pH with the concentration of bicarbonate and the precipitation of a strontianite ($SrCO_3$) are major factors controlling Sr adsorption behaviour in the presence of bicarbonate ion.

  • The present study was carried out to determine the effect of the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of paddy soil on the adsorption and desorption of $Sr^{90}$ from absorbed soils. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Most of the adsorbed $Sr^{90}$ was exchangeable and water soluble. $Sr^{90}$ extracted by ammonium acetate was very high compared to the water soluble fractions, and the ammount decreased with the increase of calcium application, but increased proportionally with the increase of $Sr^{90}$ treatment. 2. The distribution of $Sr^{90}$ in paddy soil depend on the soil type. Average-distribution rates of water soluble, exchangeable and non-exchangeable fractions of $Sr^{90}$ in the soils were 28.6%, 59.3% and 12.1% respectively. 3. The non-exchangeable from of $Sr^{90}$ was high in the soils of high illite and low vermiculite content. 4. The desorption of $Sr^{90}$ from adsorbed soils decreased with the increase of pH and ex-cations of the soils, but increased with the amount of organic matter and clay content in the soil.

  • Dissolved /sup 137/Cs, /sup 239.240/Pu, /sup 238/Pu and /sup 90/Sr contents in winter and spring of the Yellow Sea were determined to describe the distribution of artificial radionuclides. Surface water samples (100 liter) were collected by using a submerged pump, and subsurface samples (>10m depth) were collected using a 10L Niskin water sampler mounted to the Rosette sampler. The levels in the surface water ranged between 1.78~3.38 mBq kg/sup -1/ for /sup 137/Cs, 2.17~13.35 μBq kg/sup -1/ for /sup 239,240/Pu, and 1.97~3.96 mBq kg/sup -1/ for /sup 90/Sr, respectively. In particular, the concentration of /sup 239.240/Pu were 1/10 of those in the vicinity of Changjiang estuary (61~83 μBq kg/sup -1/). The difference of /sup 238.240/Pu concentration between surface and bottom water was <3.0 μBq kg/sup -1/in the Yellow Sea. It suggests that in the Yellow Sea which has shallow and high suspended sediments, /sup 239.240/Pu is preferentially removed from the water columm. The water column inventory of /sup 239.240/Pu in the Yellow Sea constitute about 0.7~0.9 % of the estimated fallout input to the area. The activity ratios of /sup 239.240/Pu//sup 137/Cs and /sup 137/Cs//sup 90/Sr ranged between 0.001~0.005, 0.79~1.65, respectively, and similar to those of open ocean which global fallout is the only source of artificial radionuclides. Therefore, it suggests that most of these artificial radionuclides in the Yellow Sea may be controlled by the atmospheric input.

  • For the safety assessment of radwaste treatment and disposal, the leaching characteristics of $Cs^+\;and\;Sr^{++}$ from the cement-solidified radwastes was investigated by means of the survey and analysis of the activity leach rate and cumulative leach fraction of $^{137}Cs\;and\;^{90}Sr$ leaching from solidified radwastes. The cylindrical cement-solidified samples were made by the sodium silicate method and neutralization method changing the mole density of simulated liquid radwaste, type of cement, adding material and concentration of boric acid. The leaching study was carried out by the method using simulated PWR concentrated liquid radwaste solidified in cement that had been processed following the recommendations of IAEA. All the experimental results are in well accordance with the research data reported previously, but the watertight cement-solidified radwastes show rather high leach rate of radioactivity. It is learned, therefore, that the watertight cement is not adequate as the material for the solidified radwastes.

  • The influence of phosphorus and nitrogen application on the uptake of radioactive strontium by Chinese cabbage and raddish was studied in pot experiments. The dry matter yield of Chinese cabbage and raddish increased with the application of phosphorus and nitrogen. High yield of raddish was obtained by the additions of nitrate while Chinese cabbage was obtained by the ammonium. The content of potassium in the vegetables was enhanced by the application of phosphorus. and the calcium content increased with the application of nitrogen. The content of $^{90}Sr$ was higher in the raddish than in the Chinese cabbage while the $^{90}Sr$ activity in the dry matter of vegetables decreased considerably with the application of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizer. This indicates that the suppression of uptake was more effective with the application of nitrate than with ammonium.

  • The optimized derived intervention levels for animal products were evaluated based on cost-benefit analysis. From these results, the radionuclide concentrations in animal feedstuffs for use were derived. It was shown that radionuclide concentrations in animal feedstuffs for use depend strongly on animal products, radionuclides and feeding period (period from the starting time to be led with contaminated feedstuffs to production time of animal products). In case of feedstuffs contaminated with long-lived radionuclides ($^{l37}Cs,\;^{90}Sr$), the feedstuffs with lower contamination should be supplied to animals with increase of feeding period due to the bioaccumulation of radionuclides. While, in case of feedstuffs contaminated with short-lived radionuclides ($^{131}I$), the feeding of higher contaminated feedstuffs was possible with increase of feeding period due to radionuclide decay. It was shown that $^{137}Cs$ concentration in animal feedstuffs lot use was lower than $^{90}Sr$ concentration. It is primarily, due to the higher feed-animal product transfer factor of $^{137}Cs$.

  • With regard to the radioactive waste disposal, adsorption properties and migration rates have been evaluated for Cs-137 and Sr-90 with the domestic clay sampled from Cnyang, Sanchong and Mooan. Sorption coefficients (Ksorp) were determined by batch experiments. The measured values of Ksorp were ranged from 8000 to 17,000 ml/gr for Cs-137 of 0.1$\mu$Ci/ml, and from 10,000 to 15,000m1/gr for Sr-90 of 0.l$\mu$Ci/ml. Remarkably, Mooan clay showed lower values of Ksorp than those of the others. This could be explained by the poor soprtion capacity of the quartz found only in the Mooan clay. For the quantitative analysis, sorption isotherm equations of Freundlich type were made with the obtained values of Ksorp. $C_{R}$=18.0 $C_{A}$$^{0.74}$ : Cs-137, $C_{R}$=0.84 $C_{A}$$^{0.45}$ : Sr-90. By introducing the BOX model combined with the above relationships, simulation of underground nuclide movement was carried out. The results showed that the domestic clays could be the effective backfill material for repositories.itories.ies.

  • Because of the drastic development of nuclear industries, the contamination of natural environments by the disposal of radioactive materials which are released from nuclear facilities have aroused a considerable concern in relation to agricultural practices. Therefore the present investigation, through pot experiment, was performed to find out the aspect of the uptake of $Sr^{90}$ by rice plants and its distribution in them in five different types(physicochemical and minerallogical properties) of paddy soils. The results obtained were as follows; 1) Visual toxic symptoms on the growth of rice plant due to treatment of $Sr^{90}$ up to $40{\mu}Ci/10㎏$ in a pot were not observed even though uptake of $Sr^{90}$ by rice plant was proportionally increased with the $Sr^{90}$ treatment. 2) Distribution of $Sr^{90}$ in the rice plant was the highest in the leaves (84.5%) followed in the order by stems (13.5%) and rough grain (2.0%). The ratio of $Sr^{90}$ to Ca was higher in the leaves (872) and stems (667) than in the rice grain (89). 3) $Sr^{90}$ absorption in the rice plant ranged $0.15{\sim}0.30%$ at harvesting time. Uptake of $Sr^{90}$ by rice plants decreased by the increase of soil pH and exchangeable canons in the soils, but $Sr^{90}$ uptake increased when nitrogen, organic matter and clay content in soil was high, and uptake of this nuclide in the rice plant was higher with low Illite and Vermiculite content in the soils.
