To investigate the absorption and transfer factor(TF) of Sr-85 by rice(Oryza sativa L.), experiments were carried out through pot cultivations on a sandy-loam soil treated 74 and 222Bq per gram of soil in a plastic film house. Sr-85 absorption rates of Ilpoombyeo, late maturing variety and Odaebyeo, early maturing variety, at harvesting stage, were 0.39-0.43% and 0.66-0.73%, respectively. Sr-85 absorption rates of Odaebyeo were about 1.5 times higher than those of Ilpoombyeo. Ratios of Sr-85 radiation and Sr-85 concentration in brown rice were much lower compared with those in straw and husk. Sr-85 concentrations in each part of Odaebyeo were remarkably higher than those of Ilpoombyeo. Transfer factor of Sr-85 from soil to plant ranged from 0.037 of brown rice to 4.13 of rice straw at harvesting stage. The order of the Sr-85 transfer factor in plant parts was straw>husk>brown rice. Sr-85 concentrations treated in soil had no effect on the growth and yield of rice.

Chitosan is known to be one of the natural chelating agents. It is derived from chitin which is a cellulose-like biopolymer distributed widely in nature, especially in shellfish, insects, fungi, and yeast. There are two forms of chitosans, water soluble and insoluble, The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether water soluble chitosan can be applied to reduce the bioabailability of radios-trontium in foods. We compared the effect of water soluble and insoluble chitosans on the absorption of ingested radiostrontium ($^{85}Sr$). Three percent water soluble and insoluble chitosan solutions were given orally, and immediately after $^{85}SrCl_2$ ($0.2{\mu}Ci$) was administered to rats using a orogastric tube. In one group water soluble chitosan solution was given for additional 4 days. And in control group no chitosan was given. Each group consisted of 6 rats. The whole-body retention of $^{85}Sr$, determined by in vivo counting method, was lower in water soluble chitosan group than that of water insoluble chitosan group and that of control. Urinary excretion of $^{85}Sr$ in chitosan-treated rats was higher than that of control. And 5 day ingested group of water soluble chitosan showed least whole body retention of $^{85}Sr$. In conclusion water soluble chitosan was more effective in reducing bioavailability of ingested radiostrontium in the gastrointestinal tract than insoluble chitosan.
The alignment of Sr-ferrite magnetic powders, which is usually related to the fluidity and the applied magnetic field, is investicated in the anisotropic Sr-ferrite / resin-bonded permanent magnets. The magnetic powder alignment is observed to increase with the applied magnetic field and the fluidity which is a function of molding temperature and powder packing ratio. The best magnetic powder alignment is achieved at the following conditions; Sr-ferrite packing ratio of 56vol%, apparent viscosity of about 3000 poise in $1000sec^{-1}$ shear rate, and applied magnetic field of about 5kOe. The degree of preferred orientation of the magnetic powders in the field direction, as determined by the dc hysterisis graphs, is 84~85% (0.84~0.85). This result is in agreement with the value of 0.85 obtained by the X-ray experiments in the $2{\theta}$ range of ${23~40}^0$. The best magnetic properties obtained are:2.2kG of remanent flux density, 2.2MGOe of maximum energy product.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether water soluble chitosan, a natural nontoxic chelator, can reduce fetal contamination of radiostrontium in pregnant mice. Various forms of water soluble chitosans (10% or 1% powder, or 1% solution) were given to pregnant mice before or after contamination of 0.005 uCi/B.W(g) Sr-85. Transplacental transfer of Sr-85 to fetus was $6.8{\pm}2.7%$ of injected dose, when Sr-85 was administered at the 20th day of pregnancy. Fetal radioactivity was significantly reduced when mother mice were treated with water soluble chitosan before contamination of Sr-85. Water soluble chitosans of 10% or 1% powder, or 1% solution significantly reduced fetal retention of Sr-85 to $2.3{\pm}0.7%$, $2.7{\pm}0.8%$, and $2.0{\pm}0.9%$, respectively. However, fetal contamination was not reduced, when water soluble chitosans of 10% or 1% powder, or 1% solution were administered after maternal contamination of Sr-85. From these data we can conclude that water soluble chitosan could reduce fetal contamination of radiostrontium in pregnant mice, when given before the pregnant mice were exposed to radiostrontium.

Radiostrontium is one of fallouts. It can be absorbed through intestine and causing radiation injury to bones. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the inhibitory effect of 10% chitosan (water soluble and insoluble) and 10% alginate (water soluble and insoluble) on radiostrontium adsorption. Water soluble and insoluble chitosans and alginates were given to 10 NIH male mice in each group for 7 days. At the 7th day, 74 MBq of $^{85}Sr$ were given through orogastric tube. Chitosans and alginates were given for additional 7 days. During the 7 days, radioactivities of feces were counted daily. Finally animals were sacrificed, and radioactivities of bones were counted. Fecal excretion was significantly higher in chitosan and alginate group as compared to control from the 1st day (p < 0.01). Water soluble chitosan group showed highest fecal excretion. Bony retention was significantly lower in the treated group than the control (p < 0.01). There was no difference among treated groups. In conclusion, both water soluble and insoluble chitosans and alginates were effective agents on lowering orally ingested radiostrontium ($^{85}Sr$).
Leaching of $^{54}Mn$, $^{60}Co$, $^{85}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$ in paddy soil was studied using lysimeter cultures in a greenhouse. The radionuclides were applied to the water surfaces shortly before transplanting and five different times between transplanting and harvest. Fertilizer KCl and slaked lime were added simultaneously in the rate of 83kg and 200kg, respectively, per l0a following the first application after transplanting. Percolating water was sampled until two days before harvest. Concentrations of the radionuclides in percolating water decreased in the order of $^{85}Sr$ > $^{54}Mn$ > $^{60}Co$ > $^{137}Cs$ on the whole. Time taken to reach the maximum was the shortest for $^{137}Cs$(< one week) and the longest for $^{54}Mn$ and $^{85}Sr$. Six days' water dropping started 47 days after transplanting reduced the concentrations of $^{54}Mn$, $^{60}Co$, $^{85}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$ by factors of 30-180, 3-75, 2-4 and 3-6, respectively, depending on the application time. After the significant decrease, $^{54}Mn$ concentration tended to gradually increase but $^{137}Cs$ did to the contrary Percent leaching varied 0.09-6.2% for $^{54}Mn$, 0.009-0.9% for $^{60}Co$, 1.4-14.4% for $^{85}Sr$ and 0.002-0.06% for $^{137}Cs$, with the application time. The highest leaching came from the application at 40 days after transplanting for all the radionuclides. The addition of KCl and lime increased percent leaching of the radionuclides by factors of 9, 85, 4 and 9, respectively.

Radiostrontium passes the placental barrier in pregnant rodents very well. Chitosan, a natural nontoxic chelator, was reported to reduce whole body retention of radiostrontium in mice. The aim of the present study was to evaluate water soluble chitosan as a blocking agent of transplacental transfer of radiostrontium in pregnant mice. Twenty pregnant mice were divided into four groups: control and three groups of chitosan treatment (groups 1 to 3). Sr-85(15KBq in 0.2ml saline) was subcutaneously injected into pregnant mice at the 17th day of pregnancy. In control mice, 0.2ml saline was given 5 hours after the injection of Sr-85. In group 1, 1% water soluble chitosan was given subcutanously for two days, twice daily after the injection of Sr-85. In group 2, 10% water soluble chitosan was given orally for 15 days before conception. In group 3, 0.3% water soluble chitosan was injected intravenously for 15 days, once daily before conception. Gamma counting of newborns were done at days 0, 2 and 7 after their births. Whole body retention of Sr-85 in newborns of control mice at days 0, 2, 7 were $3.1{\pm}0.3%,\;2.9{\pm}0.3%,\;2.8{\pm}0.3%$ respectively. In experimental groups, whole body retention of Sr-85 was significantly lower than that of control (p<0.01) and no statistical difference was noted between them. In group 1, the values were $2.1{\pm}0.3%,\;1.4{\pm}0.1%,\;1.4{\pm}0.1%$, respectively. In group 3, they were $2.1{\pm}0.2%,\;1.7{\pm}0.2%,\;1.6{\pm}0.2%$, respectively. In conclusion, the water soluble chitosan reduced transplacental contamination of radiostrontium in pregnant mice.
The effects of Ca/Sr ratio and the sintering temperature on the properties of $(Ca_xSr_{(1-x)})ZrO_3$ (CSZ) ceramics were investigated in this study. CSZ ceramics were prepared using solid-state reaction process, which were sintered in air at temperatures ranging from $1350^{\circ}C$ to $1450^{\circ}C$. Their structures were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The change in Ca/Sr ratio significantly affected the crystalline phase and the dielectric properties of the $(Ca_xSr_{(1-x)})ZrO_3$ ceramics. The secondary phase, $Ca_{0.15}Zr_{0.85}O_{1.85}$, was observed and increased correspondingly with the rising of sintering temperatures. In order to understand the effects of secondary phase on the dielectric properties of CSZ ceramics, the $Ca_{0.15}Zr_{0.85}O_{1.85}$ phase was prepared individually using solidstate method. The $Ca_{0.15}Zr_{0.85}O_{1.85}$ ceramics sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours possessed a dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$) of 21.7, a dielectric loss ($tan{\delta}$) of $49.510^{-4}$ and an Insulation Resistance (IR) of $2.1{\times}10^{10}{\Omega}$. The ($Ca_{0.7}Sr_{0.3})ZrO_3$ ceramics exhibited the best dielectric properties, with a permittivity of 29, a dielectric loss ($tan{\delta}$) of $2.7{\times}10^{-4}$, and an Insulation Resistance (IR) of $2.6{\times}10^{12}{\Omega}$.
The effects of a simultaneous application of KCl and lime on the root uptake of $^{54}Mn,\;^{60}Co,\;^{85}Sr\;and\;^{137}Cs$ by rice, soybean, Chinese cabbage and radish were investigated through 2 years' greenhouse experiments. At their early growth stages, a mixed solution of the radionuclides was applied to the water or soil surfaces of the culture boxes filled with an acidic loamy-sandy soil for the upper 20cm and $83g/m^2$ of fertilizer KCl and $200g/m^2$ of slake lime were applied to the surfaces. Distribution of radioactivities among plant parts and change in uptake pattern with plant species were not, on the whole, significantly affected by the application. It reduced effectively soil-to-plant transfer factors of $^{85}Sr\;and\;^{137}Cs$ for rice, of all for Chinese cabbage and of $^{54}Mn,\;^{60}Co,\;and\;^{137}Cs$ for radish without their growth inhibition. In rice, $^{85}Sr$ showed the highest decrease $({\sim}60%)$ while, in Chinese cabbage and radish, $^{54}Mn$ did $({\sim}80%)$. The exprimental results can become valuable reference data to establish countermeasures against a radioactive contamination of farm-land during plant growth.
