  • Local buckling behaviors of aluminum square tube beams reinforced by aluminum plates under three point bending loads have been analyzed using experimental tests combined with theoretical and finite element analyses. For this analysis true stresses were determined from applied loads and cross-sectional area records of a tensile specimen with a rectangular cross-section by real-time photographing. True strains were also obtained from in-situ local elongation measurements of the specimen gage portion by the multi-point scanning laser extensometer. Six kinds of aluminum tube beam specimens reinforced by aluminum plates were employed for the bending test. The bending deformation behaviors up to the maximum load analyzed by the numerical simulation agreed well with experimental ones. After passing the maximum load, reinforcing plate hindering the local buckling of the tube beam was debonded from the aluminum tube beam. An aluminum tube beam strengthened by aluminum plate on the upper web showed the most excellent bending capacity, which could be explained on the basis of the neutral axis shift and the local buckling deformation range.

  • Heat transfer by laminar oscillating flow in a circular pipe has been studied analytically. The general solution with respect to the arbitrary wall boundary condition is obtained by superposing the fluid temperatures with the sinusoidal wall temperature distributions. The fulid temperature distributions are two dimensional, but uniform flow assumption is used to simplify the velocity distribution. The heat transfer characteristics in the thermally developing regions are analyzed by applying the general solution to the two cases of thermal boundary conditions in which the wall temperature and wall heat flux distributions have a square-wave form, respectively. The results show that the length of the thermally developing region becomes larger in proportion to the oscillation frequency at slow oscillation and eventually approaches to the value comparable to the swept distance as the frequency increases. The time and cross-section averaged Nusselt number in the developing region is inversely proportional to the square root of the distance from the position where the wall boundary condition is changed suddenly. In the developed region, Nusselt number is only determined by the oscillation frequency.

  • This paper presents an experimental study and its findings of the behavior of circular and square stub columns filled with high strength concrete ($f_c^{\prime}$=49MPa) and polymer cement concrete (PCC) under concentric compressive load. Twenty-four specimens were tested to investigate the effects of variations in the tube shape (circular, square), wall thickness, and concrete type on the axial strength of stub columns. The characteristics of CFT stub columns filled with two types of concrete were investigated in order to collect the basic design data for using the PCC for the CFT columns. The experimental investigations included consideration of the effects of the concrete fill on the failure mode, ultimate strength, initial stiffness and deformation capacity. One of the key findings of this study was that circular section members filled with PCC retain their structural resistance without reduction far beyond the ultimate capacity. The results presented in this paper will provide experimental data to aid in the development of design procedures for the use of advanced concretes in CFT columns. Additionally, these results give structural designers invaluable insight into the realistic behavior of CFT columns.

  • Studies on the second-order analysis of reinforced concrete columns have been chiefly dealt with symmetric section under uniaxial loading. In practical situations, however, columns are subjected to biaxial loadings. Therefore, for more accurate prediction of the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading, the interaction between bending moments of major and minor axes should be considered. Recently Kim & Lee proposed a numerical method of predicting the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading. In this paper, to investigate the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading and verify the validity of proposed method, a series of test were carried out for sixteen tied reinforced columns with 100${\times}$100mm square and 200${\times}$100mm rectangular sections under various loading conditions. The length of columns was 1,300mm and the concrete strength was 28MPa. The boundary conditions at the both ends were hinged and end eccentricities were equal(400mm). Proposed numerical analyses applied to the test piece were performed to predict behavior of concrete columns with square and rectangular sections under various loading conditions. Test results were also compared with those using the moment magnifier method in ACI code. The test results showed that the moment magnifier method is conservative.

  • The effect of capillary cross-section geometry on evaporation is investigated in terms of the meniscus shape, evaporation rate and evaporation-induced flow for circular, square and rectangular cross-sectional capillaries. The shapes of water and ethanol menisci are not much different from each other in square and rectangular capillaries even though the surface tension of water is much larger than that of ethanol. On the other hand, the shapes of water and ethanol menisci are very different from each other in circular capillary. The averaged evaporation fluxes in circular and rectangular capillaries are measured by tracking the meniscus position. At a given position, the averaged evaporation flux in rectangular capillaries is much larger than that in circular capillary with comparable hydraulic diameter. The flow near the evaporating meniscus is also measured using micro-PIV, so that the rotating vortex motion is observed near the evaporating ethanol and methanol menisci except for the case of methanol meniscus in rectangular capillary. This difference is considered to be due to the existence of corner menisci at the four comers.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate experimentally and theoretically the strength and deformation of K-joints in welded Warren-type square hollow structural section truss. There are 2 types in K-joints in K-joints having one compression bracing member and one tension bracing member. One type is KP-series that brae members are rotated to $45^{\circ}$, another type is KS-series that are not rotated. Principal parameters are the ratio of the chord width to thickness (D/T=33.3, 25, 16.7), the ratio of brace width to chord width(d/D=0.4, 0.5, 0.67, 0.83, 1.0) and the ratio of eccenticity to chord height (e/D=0.25, 0.125, 0, -0.125, -0.25, -0.375, -0.5). The important results obtained from the experiments are as follow ; The strength of K-joints increase proportionally as the D/T ratio decreases, and the d/D ratio increases. But the e/D ratio has no correlation with the strength of K-joints. Generally the strength and ductility ratio of KP-series increase more than a current type(KS-series) in full ${\beta}$range.

  • The high-rise supporting towers of long-span suspension and cable-stayed bridges commonly comprise a pair of slender prisms of roughly square cross-section with a center-to-centre spacing of from perhaps 2 to 6 widths and connected by one or more cross-ties. The tower columns may have a constant spacing as common for suspension bridges or the spacing may reduce towards the top of the tower. The present paper is concerned with the aerodynamics of such towers and describes an experimental investigation of the overall aerodynamic forces acting on a pair of square cylinders in two-dimensional flow. Wind tunnel pressure measurements were carried out in smooth flow and with a longitudinal intensity of turbulence 0.10. Different angles of attack were considered between $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, and separations between the two columns from twice to 13 times the side width of the column. The mean values of the overall forces proved to be related to the bias introduced in the flow by the interaction between the two cylinders; the overall rms forces are related to the level of coherence between the shedding-induced forces on the two cylinders and to their phase. Plots showing the variation of the force coefficients and Strouhal number as a function of the separation, together with the force coefficients spectra and lift cross-correlation functions are presented in the paper.

  • This paper deals with the buckling and postbuckling responses, and the progressive failure of square laminates of symmetric lay-up with a central rectangular cutout under in-plane shear load. A detailed investigation is made to show the effects of cutout size and cutout aspect ratio on the buckling and postbuckling responses, failure loads and failure characteristics of $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$, $(+45/-45)_{4s}$ and $(0/90)_{4s}$ laminates. The 3-D Tsai-Hill criterion is used to predict the failure of a lamina while the onset of delamination is predicted by the interlaminar failure criterion. In addition, the effects of boundary conditions on buckling loads, failure loads, failure modes, and maximum transverse deflection for a $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$ laminate with and without a square cutout have been presented. It is concluded that because of early onset of delamination at the net section of cutouts before first-ply failure, total strength of the laminate with very small cutouts can not be utilized.

  • In industrial plants such as nuclear power plants, system operations are performed by embedded controllers orchestrated by Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software. A targeted attack (also termed a control aware attack) on the controller/SCADA software can lead a control system to operate in an unsafe mode or sometimes to complete shutdown of the plant. Such malware attacks can result in tremendous cost to the organization for recovery, cleanup, and maintenance activity. SCADA systems in operational mode generate huge log files. These files are useful in analysis of the plant behavior and diagnostics during an ongoing attack. However, they are bulky and difficult for manual inspection. Data mining techniques such as least squares approximation and computational methods can be used in the analysis of logs and to take proactive actions when required. This paper explores methodologies and algorithms so as to develop an effective monitoring scheme against control aware cyber attacks. It also explains soft computation techniques such as the computational geometric method and least squares approximation that can be effective in monitor design. This paper provides insights into diagnostic monitoring of its effectiveness by attack simulations on a four-tank model and using computation techniques to diagnose it. Cyber security of instrumentation and control systems used in nuclear power plants is of paramount importance and hence could be a possible target of such applications.

  • Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) members are commonly used as composite columns in modern construction. However, the current guidelines for members' fire design (EN1994-1-2) have been proved to be unsafe in case the relative slenderness is higher than 0.5. In addition, the simplified design methods of Eurocode 4 are limited to circular and square CFST columns, while in practice columns with rectangular and elliptical hollow sections are being increasingly used because of their architectural aesthetics. In the last years a large experimental research has been carried out at Coimbra University on the topic. They have been tested concrete filled circular, square, rectangular and elliptical hollow columns with restrained thermal elongation. Some parameters such as the slenderness, the type of cross-section geometry as well as the axial and rotational restraint of the surrounding structure to the column have been tested in order to evaluate their influence on the fire resistance of such columns. In this paper it is evaluated the influence of the boundary conditions (pin-ended and semi-rigid end-support conditions) on the behavior of the columns in case of fire. In these tests it could not be seen a marked effect of the tested boundary conditions but it is believed that the increasing of rotational stiffness increases the fire resistance of the columns.
