  • In this study, we develop a method to achieve heat transfer enhancement inside a square duct with high aspect ratio without changing any inner structures. Especially, a method to lower the possible maximum temperature is suggested if constant heat flux is provided to single surface of square duct. Knowing the fact that heat transfer rate is inversely proportional to flow area, we proposed tapered channel concept which uses narrower gap toward the flow exit where the maximum temperature is expected. To maintain equivalent power consumption, inlet section has been enlarged. To verify the proposed concept, experimental tests have been performed.

  • This study presents development of an software for process and die design of hot extrusion through square dies. The design of extrusion dies is still an art rather than a science with increasing complexity of shape and thinness of section. Therefore most of the die design is still dependent on personal judgement intuition and experience. The objective of this study is to develop an software system which includes a design rule extracted from literatures and experts in the extrusion industry. The developed system is effectively used to design extrusion processes and dies with reduced lead time and trial extrusion.

  • Since the formability of AZ31 magnesium alloy is not good in room temperature, it is known that high temperature forming is advantageous. However, many studies are necessary to find the proper forming temperature for Mg alloy. In this study, experimental and FEM analysis are performed to investigate the forming temperature for AZ31 sheet. The deep drawing process of square cup is used in forming experiment and FEA. The investigations are performed in three forming temperature, room temperature, $250^{\circ}C\;and\;400^{\circ}C$. The square cup is well formed in $250^{\circ}C$ forming temperature, on the other hand, the crack and failure is presented in corner section in room and $250^{\circ}C$ forming temperature. The main cause is investigated as the effect of hardening range by the experimental and FEM results.

  • In square die extrusion, flow guide and ide land play important roles for controlling the metal flow in die design. In the present work, the flow guide and the die land are considered for the die construction. Based on ALE description , rigid-viscoplastic finite element analysid is carried out to assess the effects of process and die design parameters. The thermal state affects greatly the product quality in hot extrusion. in the present work, the temperature distribution is also analyzed in theframwork of rigid-viscoplastic finite element computation. As a computational example, hot square die extrusion with flow guide and die land has been analyzed for the profile of a H section.

  • The shape of nozzle cross-section plays an important role in stabilizing electrospray jet. The angle of contact line is governed based on the famous Young-Laplace equation. Compared to a round nozzle that has a constant curvature along the orifice, the square nozzle has four square corner edges and four straight edges that hold the meniscus in a different manner and is of interest in this study. By utilizing both square and round capillary nozzle, we examine the effect of nozzle shape in electrohydrodynamic jetting. The ejections were recorded with a high speed camera and analyzed to examine the jetting repeatability based on dynamic movement of meniscus. The result suggests that if the corner edges are not sharp, then its effect on repeatability is also limited.

  • This paper reports the numerical calculations of uniform turbulent shear flow around a square cylinder. The predictions are obtained by solving the two-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations in a finite volume technique. The turbulent fluctuations are simulated by the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and one of its variant which takes care of the realizability constraint in order to suppress the excessive generation of turbulence in a stagnation condition. It has been found that the Strouhal number and the mean drag coefficient are almost unaffected by the shear parameter but the mean lift coefficient is increased. The present predictions are compared with available experimental data.

  • The internal cooling passage of a gas turbine blade can be modeled as a ribbed channel. Most studies have considered square ribs. However, the ribs can be rounded due to improper manufacturing or wear during the operation. Hence, we have studied two different rib geometries in this study, i.e. square and semicircle ribs. We have performed large eddy simulations (LES) and experiments to validate the results from the simulations. LES predicts the detailed flow and thermal features, which have not been captured by simulations using turbulence models. By investigating the instantaneous flow and thermal fields, we propose the mechanisms for the local heat transfer distribution between ribs. For both the geometries, heat transfer is enhanced by the entrainment of the cold fluid by the vortical motions and impingement of the entrained cold fluid on the ribs.

  • A series of tests was performed to consider the behaviour of short composite columns under axial compressive loading, covering a range of S275 and S355 grade steel square hollow section filled with normal and high strength concrete. The interaction between the steel and the concrete component is considered and the results show that concrete shrinkage has an effect on the axial strength of the column. Comparisons between Eurocode 4, ACI-318 and the Australian Standards with the findings of this research were made. Result showed the equation used by the ACI-318 and the proposed Australian Standards gave better predication for the axial capacity of concrete filled SHS columns than the Eurocode 4.
