A discrete vortex method (DVM) has been developed at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Glasgow, to predict unsteady, incompressible, separated flows around closed bodies. The basis of the method is the discretisation of the vorticity field, rather than the velocity field, into a series of vortex particles that are free to move in the flow. This paper gives a brief description of the method and presents the results of calculations on static and transversely oscillating square section cylinders. The results demonstrate that the method successfully predicts the character of the flow field at different angles of incidence for the static case. Vortex lock-in around the resonance point is successfully captured in the oscillatory cases. It is concluded that the vortex method results show good agreement, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with results from various experimental data.

This study presents development of an software for process and die design of hot extrusion through square dies. The design of extrusion dies is still an art rather than a science with increasing complexity of shape and thinness of section. Therefore, most of the die design is still dependent on personal judgement, intuition and experience. The objective of this study is to develop an software system which includes a design rule extracted from literatures and experts in the extrusion industry. The system also includes finite element simulation program. The developed system is effectively used to design extrusion processes and dies with lead time and trial extrusion.

This paper describes the energy absorption of a square tube under axi compression by using the finite element method. The overall deformations and lo buckling modes of tube was discussed by "plastic hinge concep Force-displacement function was plotted to show various state that depended or time. Also, mean crush load was expressed as a type of section geometry a material property using dimensional analysis. To verify the energy absorption and the effects of dimensions, The standards Wt used as related density and specific energy, mean crushing load and the resL were discussed by the relation between crush load and deformation, the relati between related density and specific energy, the relation between crush load a mean crush load, the relation between mean crush load and specific energy.ergy.

Turbulent flow and heat transfer in the 180.deg. bend with square cross section were analizied numerically by using k-.epsilon. 2 eqatiuon model with applications of QUICK scheme and PSL method. Results with PSL method show the more agreements with experimental data than those with wall function. However these results also show that it is very difficult to predict the 3-dimensional turbulent flow with strong secondary flow accuratly by standard k-.epsilon. equation model, and therefore it is necessary to introduce the higher order turbulent model or to correct the standard k-.epsilon. model for the more accurate predictions of these types of flow.
The satellite in a circular orbit about a planet with disturbances and a three-degree-of-freedom (3DOF) structure under seismic excitations are modeled by the linear stochastic differential equations. Then the risk-sensitive optimal control method is applied to those equations. The mean and the variance of the cost function varies with respect to the risk-sensitivity parameter, .gamma.$_{RS}$ . For a particular risk-sensitivity parameter value, risk-sensitive control reduces to LQG control. Furthermore, the derivation of the mean square value of the state and control action are given for a finite-horizon full-state-feedback risk-sensitive control system. The risk-sensitive controller outperforms a classical LQG controller in the mean square sense of the state and the control action.

This study performed numerical analysis for the characteristics of flow-induced forces and the flow instability depending on the cross-sectional shape of the cylinder in laminar flow. To implement the cylinder cross-section, we adopted an Immersed Boundary Method with marker particles. We analyzed flow characteristics based on the radius of corner curvature. Main parameters are corner radius and Reynolds number (Re). With Re = 40, 50, 150 we calculated the flow field, drag coefficient, RMS of lift coefficient, pressure coefficient and Strouhal number in conjunction with the corner radius variation. Also, we calculated critical Reynolds number ($Re_c$) depending on the corner radius variation.
Fine grid calculations are reported for the developing turbulent flow in a straight duct and a curved duct of square cross-section with a radius of curvature to hydraulic diameter ratio ${\delta}=R_c/H_H=3.357$ and a bend angle of 180 deg. A sequence of modeling refinements is introduced; the replacement of wall function by a fine mesh across the sublayer and a low Reynolds number second moment closure up to the near wall sublayer in which the non-linear return to isotropy model and the cubic-quasi-isotropy model for the pressure strain are adopted; and the introduction of a multiple source model for the exact dissipation rate equation. Each refinement is shown to lead to an appreciable improvement in the agreement between measurement and computation.

Due to extremely large reduction of area or extrusion ratio in ordinary production of extruded profiles, anisotropy is naturally induced by large severe deformation during the extrusion process. Therefore, the anisotropic properties play a great role in the post processing of extruded profiles, such as in bending. Moreover, undesirable deformation will be involved when the deformation-induced anisotropy is ignored. In order to observe the deformation-induced anisotropy of the thin-walled product, the proposed algorithm is applied to some chosen industrial extrusion processes. In the resent work, the method for prediction of deformation-induced anisotropy employing the Barlats six-component yield potential to the rigid-plastic finite element method is proposed. The proposed algorithm is verified with the comparison to the crystallographic texture analysis, and then applied to the C-section exclusion process using a square die. The predicted anisotropy is then compared with the experimental and computational observations for validating the proposed algorithm.

This paper presents basis functions for curvilinear square elements and describes finite element analysis for coaxial cable and coaxial cross-section waveguide. On the case of coaxial cable, the more exact results is obtained by the propotional elements than by the equal elements with the same number of elements. It is found that the cutoff frequency of coaxial cross-sectional waveguide is more dependent on the inner and outer radius than the cross-sectional angle.
