A simple kinematically admissible velocity field is proposed to drtermine the final-stage extrusion load and the average extruded length in the square-die forward extrusion of non-axisymmetric bars from circular billets. The proposed velocity field is applied to the square-die extrusion of trochoidal gear-shaped bars and rectangular-shaped bars, the profile function of a rectangular being approximated by using a Fourier series. Experiments have been carried out with hard solder billets at room temperature. The theoretical predictions of the extrusion load are in good agreements with the experimental results and there is generally reasonable agreements in average extruded length between theory and experiment.

A simple kinematically admissible velocity field is proposed to determine the final-stage extrusion load and the average extruded length in the square-die forward extrusion of regular polygonal-shaped bars from circular billets. From the proposed velocity field, the upper-bound extrusion load and the average extruded length are determined by minimizing the total power consumption with respect to four parameters. Experiments have been carried out with hard solder billets at room temperature. The theoretical predictions of the extrusion load are in good agreements with the experimental results and there is generally reason able agreement in average extruded length between theory and experiment.
Objectives of this study included design of head and evaluation of the pullout performance of the headed reinforcement that can be used to replace standard hooks in the building exterior beam-column joints. Results of 36 pullout tests are presented. Test variables included reinforcing bar diameters (16-25mm), embedment depth (6-7db), transverse reinforcement, and single-vs.-group pullout behavior. The square head designed had gross area of 4Ab and thickness of db. The headed reinforcement made of Dl6 bars developed pullout strengths close to the bar yield strength, but larger bars developed strengths smaller than the yield strengths. The pullout resistance increased with decreasing spacing of the transverse reinforcement. Use of column ties with 6.0-db spacing improved the pullout performance of the headed bars without causing difficulties in fabricating the specimens. The comparison of the pullout performances between the headed bars and the standard hooks revealed that strengths, stiffnesses, and ductile behaviors are about the same.
With the increase of the skyscraper center, the development of large-diameter and high-strength reinforcing bars is being carried out to solve the dense reinforcement. In case of the steel reinforced concrete with a small cross section such as beam-column joints, the development length becomes short when straight bars are used. Therefore, it is possible to solve the problem that the development length becomes short by using the bearing strength of the hooked bar and headed bar. In this study, the exterior beam-column joint test of SD700 hooked bar and headed bar with anchorage length of 20db was conducted to extend the development length limitation of hooked bar and headed bar. As a result of the evaluation of the anchorage strength using the design equation by KCI, the average of the [measured value]/[predicted value] ratio was 1.31 for the hooked reinforcing bars. In the case of headed bars, the average of the [measured value]/[predicted value] ratio was 1.12. In addition, in order to compare the anchorage performance of the hooked bar and the headed bar, the measured values were divided by the square root of the compressive strength of the concrete to compare the anchorage strength. Under the same conditions, the anchorage strength of headed bars was 8.5% higher than the hooked bars.
To evaluate the bending collapse behavior of an aluminum square tube, a finite element simulation for the four-point bending test was suggested. Local buckling deformation near the center of an aluminum tube specimen was induced which has been partly inserted by two steel bars. Simulation results showed good agreements with those of experiment.
It is very important to obtain the knowledge of loads and flow patterns in most processes because these information are the fundamental data of die design and process design. The objective of present study is to investigate loads and metal flow patterns for various process conditions in flat die extrusion of square-bars from circular billets. For analyzing the metal flow patterns of the billets photo etching is used on sections of split specimen. From this method metal flow patterns are analyzed for various area reductions friction factors and punch stroke through the process from initial-stage to final-stage. Experiments are carried out with hard solder billets at room temperature.
This experimental study investigates the effectiveness of applying carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) jackets for the retrofit of short reinforced concrete (RC) columns with inadequate transverse reinforcement and stirrup spacing to longitudinal rebar diameter equal to 12. RC columns scaled at 1/3, with round and square section, were subjected to axial compression up to failure. A damage scale is introduced for the assessment of the damage severity, which focusses on the extent of buckling of the longitudinal rebars. The damaged specimens were subsequently repaired with unidirectional CFRP jackets without any treatment of the buckled reinforcing bars and were finally re-tested to failure. Test results indicate that CFRP jackets may be effectively applied to rehabilitate RC columns (a) with inadequate transverse reinforcement constructed according to older practices so as to meet modern code requirements, and (b) with moderately buckled bars without the need of previously repairing the reinforcement bars, an application technique which may considerably facilitate the retrofit of earthquake damaged RC columns. Factors for the estimation of the reduced mechanical properties of the repaired specimens compared to the respective values for intact CFRP-jacketed specimens, in relation to the level of damage prior to retrofit, are proposed both for the compressive strength and the average modulus of elasticity. It was determined that the compressive strength of the retrofitted CFRP-jacketed columns is reduced by 90% to 65%, while the average modulus of elasticity is lower by 60% to 25% in respect to similar undamaged columns jacketed with the same layers of CFRP.
In this paper, the compressive strength and ductility enhancement of concrete by lateral confinement of carbon-fiber sheets(CFS) have been studied experimentaly with cylinder specimens and square short columns reinforced externally by CFS. Test variables were amount of lateral reinforcement by CFS and space of hoop bars. Test results showed that lateral reinforcements by carbon-fiber sheets provided lateral confinement successfully for the concrete specimens and were more effective for ductility enhancement than for strength increase, and that the lateral confinement coefficient of cabon-fiber sheets increased according to narrowing the space of hoop bars in the double lateral confinement made by CFS and hoop bars.
