  • The purpose of this study is to measure the levels of eluted and dissolved CO2, and CO, volatile organic substances and radiation composition of Cheongsong mineral water which were collected from November 2019 to July 2020 during the autumn, spring, and summer seasons at collection points located in the upper, middle and lower spring waters. Data of the upper, middle and lower spring waters include the following: the amount of eluted water (average value±standard deviation, mL/min) was 30.07±0.52, 15.03±0.16, 23.73±0.42, and the amount of CO2 gas was 1,000 ppm or more. In addition, there was no detection of CO or total volatile organic substances (TVOC) and the radiation dose was 0.08 to 0.13. μSv/h. A blank test value of 0.08 to 0.10 μSv/h, when compared with the median value, showed a high value of 0.02 μSv/h, and the uranium test results provided by the Cheongsong-gun Office were 0.0118 mg/L (date 2019.06.18) and 0.0091 mg/L (date 2020.06.04.) respectively, which was less than the permission limit of 0.03 mg/L. However, it is believed that further research using more precise devices is needed in order to guarantee the safety and health of the water.

  • The temnoral variations of the suspended material concentration (SMC) during spring-neap tidal cycle was investigated at more than 30 stations in Deukryang Bay, Korea, in 1 and 23 July, 1992. The averaged total SMC in spring tide was two times more than those in neap tide. It can be explained that the strong tidal current in spring tide disturbed bottom waters and induced higher SMC in the bay. The areal distributions of SMC for the surface and the bottom layers in the bay shows much different patterns during spring and neap tidal cycle. We concluded that the vertical stratification intensity of water mass is important factor of the horizonatal distribution of SMC in the bay.

  • We examined monthly variations in community structure of larval fish assemblage in the coastal waters of south-central Korea in spring and summer, 2016. A total of 31 taxa of larvae were collected during the study period. Engraulis japonicus larvae were predominated in spring than summer. The larvae of Cynoglossus abbreviates, a spring spawners, were exclusively collected in spring, while those of Nibea albiflora, a summer spawners, were exclusively caught in summer. Due to those seasonal differences in abundance of the dominant species, larval fish community was divided into two main seasonal groups (i.e. April~May and June~August). In addition, summer group was divided into two significant subgroups (June~July and August). During August, the larvae of E. japonicus and N. albiflora sharply decreased in abundance due to abnormally high sea water temperature that was raised up to $28^{\circ}C$, with the temperature being out of range of their optimum spawning temperature.

  • Simultaneous tidal current observation at five or seven stations on the channel near Incheon Habour was conducted at neap, mean and spring tides during the period of August 16 to August 27, 1976 and the characteristic of tidal currents with each tide was studied by the analysis of these data. Times of slack refer to the times of high and low waters at neap, mean and spring tides seem to be small. Times of maximum current refer to the times of high and low waters at the mean tide tends to appear earlier than that of the neap tide and later than that of the spring tide. The velocity ratio of maximum ebb current to maximum flood current at the mean tide has larger value than that of neap tide and has smaller value than that of spring tide. The current velocity ratio of spring tide to neap tide and to mean tide are approximately 1.8 and 1.3, respectively.

  • Twenty water samples (eleven groundwater and nine geothermal water samples) were collected to elucidate hydrogeochemical characteristics of the groundwater and geothermal water in the Dongrae hot-spring area and its vicinity. Major and minor elements were analyzed for ground and geothermal water samples. Physicochemical properties of the groundwater and the geothermal water were examined and chemical composition of the two waters were compared. Factor and correlation analyses were carried out to simplify the physicochemical data into grouping some factors and to find interaction between them. The groundwaters belong to $Ca-HCO_3$ type, while the geothermal waters belong to Na-Cl type. The Na and Cl concentrations in the Dongrae hot-spring area are higher than those of other granite areas in South Korea. The Na/Cl weight ratio ranges from 0.7 to 1.3 for the geothermal waters. On the phase stability diagram groundwaters fall effectively in the field of stability of kaolinite, while geothermal waters fall in the stability field of microcline or kolinite depending on the chemical composition system. Based on the Na-K, Na-K-Ca and Na-K-Ca-Mg geothermometers, the geothermal reservoir is estimated to have equilibrium temperature between 115 and $145^{\circ}C$.

  • Seasonal and annual variation in the species composition of bag-net catch in the coastal waters of Incheon, Korea were examined from April 2000 to November 2004. To analyze seasonal variation of the fisheries data, we implemented a self-organizing map(SOM), an unsupervised artificial neural network, with the catch amount of 97 species. Over 5 years, we caught 68 species of fish, 23 species of crustaceans and six species of cephalopods. The total number of fish species were gradually increased during the study period. The number of species was higher during the spring than the autumn. The SOM identified four groups of the sampling months based on seasonal changes in communities. In the spring, the dominant species were Leptochela gracilis and Pholis fangi; whereas, in the autumn, Engraulis japonicus and Portunus trituberculatus were dominant species in bag-net catch. Our results will be used to estimate seasonal and annual variation in fisheries resources of Korean coastal waters.

  • In order to investigate the environmental properties of set net grounds located in the coastal waters of Yeosu, oceanographic observations on the fishing grounds were carried out by the training ship of Yeosu Fisheries University from Jun. 1988 to Dec. 1990. The resultes obtained are summarized as follows; 1) The water mass in the fishing grounds were divided into the inner water (29.50-31.00$\textperthousand$), the mixed water (31.10-32.70$\textperthousand$) and the offshore water (32.70-34.30$\textperthousand$) according to the distribution of salinity from T-S diagram plotted all salinity data observed from Jun. 1988 to Dec. 1990. In spring the mixing water prevailed and in summer the inner and mixing water. But in autumn and winter the mixing and offshore waters prevailed. 2) The inner water which was formed by land water from the river of Somjin and the precipitation in the Yeosu district flowed southerly along the coast of Dolsando and spread south-easterly in the vicinity of Kumodo. The inner water and offshore water which supplied from the vicinity of Sorido and Yokchido formed the thermal front and halofront. 3) As the mixing water flowing from the western sea of Cheju to the southern coast of korea was low in temperature, the water mass of low temperature which appeared at the offshore bottom of Sorido in summer was considered not to be the Tsushima warm current. 4) As vertical mixing was made frequently in spring, autumn and winter, the differences in temperature and salinity between surface and bottom was respectively small. In summer, however, the mixing was not made because of the inner water expanded offshore through the space between surface and 10m layer and so a thermocline of $2.0^{\circ}C$/10m and halocline of 4.0$\textperthousand$/10m respectively in vertical gradient was formed. 5) In the vicinity of Dolsando and Kum a water low in salinity prevailed, but in the vicinity of Namhaedo and YoKchido the reverse took place. The inner and mixing waters formed at these arease was limited to the observation area not to spread widely.
