  • A simplified method fur the eigenpair sensitivities of damped system with multiple eigenvalues is presented. This approach employs a reduced equation to determine the sensitivities of eigenpairs of the damped vibratory systems with multiple natural frequencies. In the proposed method, adjacent eigenvectors and orthonormal conditions are used to compute an algebraic equation whose order is (n+m)x(n+m), where n is the number of coordinates and m the number of multiplicity of multiple natural frequencies. The proposed method is an improved Lee and Jung's method which was developed previously. Two equations are used to find eigenvalue derivatives and eigenvector derivatives in Lee and Jung's method. A significant advantage of this approach over Lee and Jung's method is that one algebraic equation newly developed is enough to compute such eigenvalue derivatives and eigenvector derivatives. This method can be consistently applied to both structural systems with structural design parameters and mechanical systems with lumped design parameters. To demonstrate the theory of the proposed method and its possibilities in the case of multiple eigenvalues, the finite element model of the cantilever beam and 5-DOF mechanical system in the case of a non-proportionally damped system are considered as numerical examples. The design parameter of the cantilever beam is its height. and that of the 5-DOF mechanical system is a spring.

  • A simplified method is presented for the computation of eigenvalue and eigenvector derivatives associated with repeated eigenvalues. In the proposed method, adjacent eigenvectors and orthonormal conditions are used to compose an algebraic equation whose order is (n+m)x(n+m), where n is the number of coordinates and m is the number of multiplicity of the repeated eigenvalue. One algebraic equation developed can be computed eigenvalue and eigenvector derivatives simultaneously. Since the coefficient matrix of the proposed equation is symmetric and based on N-space, this method is very efficient compared to previous methods. Moreover the numerical stability of the method is guaranteed because the coefficient matrix of the proposed equation is non-singular, This method can be consistently applied to both structural systems with structural design parameters and mechanical systems with lumped design parameters. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the finite element model of the cantilever beam and a 5-DOF mechanical system in the case of a non-proportionally damped system are considered as numerical examples. The design parameter of the cantilever beam is its width, and that of the 5-DOF mechanical system is a spring.

  • This paper presents the dynamic parameter design optimization of a suspension seat system using the genetic algorithm. At first, an equivalent 1-D.O.F. mass-spring-damper model of a suspension seat system was constructed for the purpose of its vibration analysis. Vertical vibration response and transmissibility of the equivalent model due to base excitations, which are defined in the ISO's seat vibration test codes, were computed. Furthermore, seat vibration test, that is ISO's damping test, was carried out in order to investigate the validity of the equivalent suspension seat model. Both analytical and experimental results showed good agreement each other. For the design optimization, the acceleration transmissibility of the suspension seat model was adopted as an object function. A simple genetic algorithm was used to search the optimum values of the design variables, suspension stiffness and damping coefficient. Finally, vibration ride performance test results showed that the optimum suspension parameters gives the lowest vibration transmissibility. Accordingly the genetic algorithm and the equivalent suspension seat modelling can be successfully adopted in the vibration ride quality optimization of a suspension seat system.

  • Floating floor structure, which is mainly adopted for reducing interior noise of railway vehicle, is known that it is superior to single wall in respect of sound transmission loss. The dynamic characteristic of the support in the floating floor that is one of the important design variables in floating floor structure can change the sound and vibration insulation properties of it. From excitation test, the dynamic stiffness and loss factor of the support are evaluated. They are used as input parameter for analyzing the sound transmission loss of floating floor. Predicted transmission loss is compared with the prototype-car test results.

  • In this paper, simulation results of a robust digital tracking controller on a robotic manipulator are presented. The objective is to follow a ramp reference input with zero steady state error in the presence of a disturbance and system parameter variations. Some of the difficulties are caused by the Coulomb frictions, the disturbance due to the gravitational pull, the spring effect of a link between the drive motor and the manipulator arm. Another difficulty is that, because of the non-differentiable Coulomb friction, the digital control system cannot be represented as a discrete system. It is thus necessary to design the controller based on a discrete-continuous hybrid model. The controller is based on feeding back the state variables and augmenting the system by addition discrete integrators. The feedback gain parameters are obtained by applying the quadratic optimal control theory and then choosing the new weighting matrices to eliminate the limit cycle by using the describing function method for hybrid system.

  • The nonlinear vibration of the CRT shadow mask is analyzed in consideration of the V-shaped tension distribution and the effect of wire impact damping. The reduced order FEM model of the shadow mask is obtained from dynamic condensation for the mass and stiffness matrices. Damping wire is modeled using the lumped parameter method to effectively describe its contact interactions with the shadow mask. The nonlinear contact-impact model is composed of spring and damper elements, of which parameters are determined from the Hertzian contact theory and the restitution coefficient, respectively. The analysis model of the shadow mask with damping wires is experimentally verified through impact tests of shadow masks performed in a vacuum chamber. Using the validated analysis model of the shadow mask with damping wires, the‘design of experiments’technique is applied to search fur the optimal damping wire configuration so that the vibration attenuation of the shadow mask is maximized.

  • The objective of this study is to understand the dynamic characterictics of OHV type valve trains and to design and optimal cam profile which will improve engine performance. A numerical model for valve train dynamics is presented, which aims at both accuracy and computational efficiency. The lumped mass model and distributed parameter model were used to describe the valve train dynamics. Nonlinear characterictics in the valve spring behavior were included in the model. Comprehensive experiments were carried out concerning the valve train dynamics, and the model was tuned based on the test results. The dynamic model was used in designing an optimal cam profile. Because the objective function has many local minima, a conventional local optimizer cannot be used to find an optimal solution. A modified adaptive random search method is successfully employed to solve the problem. Cam lobe area could be increased up to 7.3% without any penalties in kinematic and dynamic behaviors of the valve train.

  • The nonlinear vibration of the thin perforated plate is analyzed in consideration of the V-shaped tension distribution and the effect of wire impact damping. The reduced order FEM model of the tension plate is obtained from dynamic condensation for the mass and stiffness matrices. Tension wire is modeled using the lumped parameter method to effectively describe its contact interactions with the plate. The nonlinear contact-impact model is composed of spring and damper elements, of which parameters are determined from the Hertzian contact theory and the restitution coefficient, respectively. From the evaluation of the computational accuracy and computation time for the deduced impact stiffness and damping coefficient, we determined proper values for the simulation works, accounting for the computational accuracy as well as the computational efficiency. Finally we discussed the results of nonlinear nitration analysis for variations of their design parameters.

  • This study presents the hygro-thermo-electromagnetic mechanical vibration attributes of elastically restrained piezoelectric nanobeam considering effects of beam surface for various elastic non-ideal boundary conditions. The nonlocal Eringen theory besides the surface effects containing surface stress, surface elasticity and surface density are employed to incorporate size-dependent effects in the whole of the model and the corresponding governing equations are derived using Hamilton principle. The natural frequencies are derived with the help of differential transformation method (DTM) as a semi-analytical-numerical method. Some validations are presented between differential transform method results and peer-reviewed literature to show the accuracy and the convergence of this method. Finally, the effects of spring constants, changing nonlocal parameter, imposed electric potential, temperature rise, magnetic potential and moisture concentration are explored. These results can be beneficial to design nanostructures in diverse environments.

  • This study analyzed air suspension seat frame structure and vibration for 50 - 180 kg mass driver to obtain optimum seat design parameter values for the equivalent spring constant and damping coefficient. Various air suspension seat frames were designed following WTS-003 and KS B 6839 standards, and then evaluated using finite elements analysis. Resonance and vibration tests were performed according to the 78/764/EEC standard.
