Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, COD, dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and chlorophyll were measured in the surface and bottom waters of Cheonsu Bay in April, August, December 2003, and Hay 2004. DIN showed a large seasonal variation, with higher values in summer and lower in spring. The significant decrease in DIN concentration was observed from April to May, which may imply the occurrence of spring phytoplankton bloom sometime in these periods. In contrast, DIP did not show distinct seasonal variation, with relatively low values compared with other coastal regions. The low DIP concentration in Cheonsu Bay is ascribed to a limited phosphorus input around Cheonsu Bay. The Nf ratios of Cheonsu Bay much higher than the Redfield ratio(16) in all season indicate that phytoplankton growth is limited by phosphorus. Based on low chlorophyll concentrations and eutrophication index, Cheonsu Bay has not been in eutrophic condition during our observation periods. In the artificial lakes located around Cheonsu Bay, however, chlorophyll concentrations were very high, mostly over $10{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$, indicating that they are now in severe eutrophic condition.

A study on the seasonal changes in the phytoplankton community was carried out in four aquaculture ponds of Bangladesh over a period of 16 months from August 2000 to November 2001. Out of 45 phytoplankton species identified, 30 belong to Cyanophyceae, 7 to Chlorophyceae, 5 to Bacillariophyceae and 3 to Euglenophyceae. The highest phytoplankton abundance was observed in spring followed by early autumn, summer, and the lowest was in winter. The annual succession of Cyanophyceae was characterized by spring and early autumn period dominated by Microcystis sp. Anabaena sp. and Planktolymbya sp. with Microcystis sp. as the main blue-green algae represented. Chlorophyceae was characterized by rainy season domination of Chlorella vulgaris, Pediastrum sp. and Scenedesmus denticulatus with maximum abundance of Chlorella vulgaris. Whereas Bacillariophyceae was dominant during the winter period. Navicula angusta and Cyclotella meneghiniana were the most frequently occurring species of Bacillariophyceae throughout the study period. Euglenophyceae was dominant in late autumn and Euglena sp. was the dominant species. The effect of various physicochemical water quality parameters on the seasonal distribution and succession of the above mentioned phytoplankton population as well as the interaction and eutrophication are discussed.
In order to determine the distributional ecology, and to investigate factors influencing these features, the diatom communities in plankton at depths of one, twenty-five, fifty, and seventy five meters in the area were studied and measured over a fifteen month of period. Measurements of environmental factors including temperature and salinity and algal nutrients such as phosphate, silicate, nitrate, and ammonia were also made at the same depths and locations. The results indicate that the size of diatom communities and the species population changes were heavily dependent upon to season and location parameters as well as nutrient concentrations and hydrographic factors. Major factors influencing population distributions varied with principal species responsible for dominant species and species sucession. Two distinct distributional patterns in total diatom crop were observed in the study area. Maximum standing crop observed during spring and/or summer were related to the concentration of nutrients available at the onset of the spring bloom on a large scale. On a small scale, however, the distributions of total diatom standing crops were significantly correlated with both season/location factors and with hydrographic parameters as well. Vertical stratification of diatoms was observed only in the presence of the thermocline in the water column. Within the study area there was some seasonal consistancy in the composition of the species groups. However, some species association in these environments may vary with the change of season.

This paper aimed to analyze the relationship between alga3 bloom patterns and hydrological, limnological data which were collected from major reservoirs in Korea for 8 years (1990${\sim}$1997). Water temperature of river-type reservoirs showed wider seasonal fluctuations than that of lake-type. pH of lake-type reservoirs was low in winter season but high in summer season. In contrast, river-type reservoirs showed high pH in spring and autumn seasons as well, and very low in summer season. COD of lake-type reservoirs and Paldang reservoir was lower (2${\sim}$3 mg/L) than that of Geumgang and Nagdonggang reservoirs (6${\sim}$9 mg/L). Dissolved oxygen (DO) of river-type reservoirs was higher than that of lake-type reservoirs. Seasonal fluctuation pattern of DO saturation in river-type reservoirs was high (80 ${\sim}$100%) and remained relatively constant whereas lake-type reservoirs showed the highest level (93%) in late spring or early summer, which gradually decreased entering winter season(46${\sim}$06%). And monthly variation of DO saturation showed inverse proportion to water volume in lake-type reservoirs. Nutrients concentration in river-type lake is higher than lake-type. Seasonal fluctuation of nutrients (T-N, T-P) in lake-type reservoirs was relatively small than that of river-type reservoirs. Annual mean N/P mass ratio of lake-type reservoirs was higher than that of river-type. Transparency tended to related with the suspended solid concentration in river-type reservoirs. Algal bloom of lake-type and river-type reservoirs occurred at any time except rainfall and winter periods. And it dominated in summer and early autumn, respectively. Algal bloom of river-type reservoirs was higher than that of lake-type. Relationship between rainfall and chlorophyll- a in lake-type reservoirs was relatively high, however river-type reservoirs showed insignificant.

Due to climate change and its consequential spring temperature rise, flowering time of Robinia pseudoacacia has advanced and a simultaneous blooming phenomenon occurred in different regions in South Korea. These changes in flowering time became a major crisis in the domestic beekeeping industry and the demand for accurate prediction of flowering time for R. pseudoacacia is increasing. In this study, we developed and compared performance of four different models predicting flowering time of R. pseudoacacia for the entire country: a Single Model for the country (SM), Modified Single Model (MSM) using correction factors derived from SM, Group Model (GM) estimating parameters for each region, and Local Model (LM) estimating parameters for each site. To achieve this goal, the bloom date data observed at 26 points across the country for the past 12 years (2006-2017) and daily temperature data were used. As a result, bloom dates for the north central region, where spring temperature increase was more than two-fold higher than southern regions, have advanced and the differences compared with the southwest region decreased by 0.7098 days per year (p-value=0.0417). Model comparisons showed MSM and LM performed better than the other models, as shown by 24% and 15% lower RMSE than SM, respectively. Furthermore, validation with 16 additional sites for 4 years revealed co-krigging of LM showed better performance than expansion of MSM for the entire nation (RMSE: p-value=0.0118, Bias: p-value=0.0471). This study improved predictions of bloom dates for R. pseudoacacia and proposed methods for reliable expansion to the entire nation.
Fibrocapsa japonica (Raphidophyceae) is regarded as a harmful algal bloom organism in Japanese waters, where it has been linked to fish kills. Fibrocapsa is a common species in New Zealand coastal waters, particularly in the Hauraki Gulf, where it has regularly bloomed in the spring under E1 Nino climate conditions for the past six years. The New Zealand isolate had 1.4 times more total polyunsaturated acids than the Japanese isolate under the same growth conditions, suggesting that eicosapentaenoic acid in particular coold be used as a discriminating chemotaxonomic marker. The molecular probes tested showed no differential binding of the raphidophytes to lectins, but oligonucleotide probes targeted F. japonica ribosomal RNA bound specifically to both isolates. Neither strain was toxic in mouse or neuroblastoma bioassays. There is no evidence that the New Zealand F. japonica isolates investigated to date produce ichthyotoxins.
Seasonal changes of abundance of the main phytoplankton groups of species (diatoms, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, small flagellates and cryptophytes) and a set of environmental parameters were investigated in coastal and pre-estuarine waters of Peter the Great Bay (East/Japan Sea) in May-October of 1998 and 1999. Three periods of mass development were revealed: spring, summer and autumn blooms, with successive change of species. The conditions favourable for each group of species were determined. Driving mechanisms of the succession include nutrients transport through seasonal pycnocline by turbulent mixing, terrestrial nutrients supply by monsoon floods, nutrients supply by upwellings, and light control by the thickness of upper mixed layer. Summer succession could be explained by a simple SST-MLD diagram similar to Pingree S-kh diagram with sea surface temperature as indicator of stratification (S) and mixed layer depth as indicator of light availability (kh).

Spatial distribution of phytoplankton was investigated in the southwestern sea of Korea in May 2000 in terms of phytohydrography. The sampling was done at the 0m, 30m, 50m of 15 selected stations, and permanent slides of each samples were prepared by QPS method for quantitative and qualitative analyses. Phytoplankton standing crops ranged from 3.23${\times}$10$\^$-4/ to 1.09${\times}$10$\^$-7/ cellsㆍ$\ell$$\^$-1/ in the study area. Dominant species comprised of 9 diatoms and 2 phytoflagellates, showing higher dominance of diatom and most predominance of Skeletonema costatum in all layers of most stations. Phytohydrographic results indicate that the study area might be divided into 4 categories, that is, I area is designated as neritic area where occurrence of terrestrial and coastal species is frequent, II area as intermediate area, III area as offshore area where oceanic species dominate, and IV area as other's. Especially in the II area, Skeletonema costatum was most predominant at both surface and 30m layer in most stations and represent an characteristic of northward expansion with spring massive bloom.
Interannual variability in the patterns of satellitederived pigment concentrations, sea-level height anomaly, sea surface temperature anomaly, and zonal wind anomaly are observed during the 2002-2003 El Ni${\tilde{n}}$o. The largest spatial extent of the phytoplankton bloom was recovery from El Ni${\tilde{n}}$o over the equatorial Pacific. The evolution towards a warm episode (El Ni${\tilde{n}}$o) started from spring of 2002 and continued during January 2003, while equatorial Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly (SSTA) remained greater than +1$^{\circ}$C in the central equatorial Pacific. The EOS (Earth Observing System) and OSMI (Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager) data are used for detection of dramatic changes in the patterns of pigment concentration during El Ni${\tilde{n}}$o.
Spatio-temporal variations of phytoplankton abundance and nutrient concentrations were investigated in the Namdaechon estuary, Yangyang, from April to December, 2003. A total of 51 phytoplankton species were identified with 32 diatom species in the study area. Phytoplankton abundance ranged from 14 cells/mL to 3,798 cells/mL. Small sized benthic and pennate-type diatoms like Cymbella spp., Fragilaria spp., Navicula spp., Synedra spp. were dominant at throughout the whole study area. Various planktonic species like Chlamydomonas sp., Peridinium spp., Euglena spp., Cryptomonas spp. etc. were abundant especially at the estuary of the Namdaechon, from May to August. Phytoplankton bloom (>3,000 \;cells/mL) occurred from the late May to mid June. After September when the sandbank of estuary was broken by the typhoon 'Maemi', planktonic species disappeared. These planktonic species were followed by oceanic diatoms, Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros spp.. Concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and silicate were relatively high at the upstream in summer. In May, before phytoplankton bloom, high concentrations of phosphate $(>3.5\;{\mu}mol/L)$ were observed at all the study area. These results suggested that spatio-temporal variation of phytoplankton in the Namdaechon estuary was related to formation of sandbank at the mouth of the estuary, fluid speed affected by sandbank and nutrients supplied in spring. High correlation $(r^2=0.928)$ between chlorophyll a and biological oxygen demand (BOD) implies that BOD was related to phytoplankton abundance in the Namdaechon estuary.
