  • New attempt has been made on Management Science (MS) education since the end of 1990s. The most distinctive feature of the new attempt is using spreadsheet program like Excel as a teaching tool for MS course. The spreadsheet program gives an excellent tool for modeling and solvina MS problems. In order to improve the pedagogical effect through using the spreadsheet program for MS course, new teaching model based on spreadsheet encompassing new course contents, effective instruction method, and examination method is needed. For this purpose, professors teaching MS should share their own teaching experiences and methods. So this paper explains remarkable functions of Excel and how to use them for the MS tools. This paper also stresses the importance of team project and case study to improve the effect of MS education through the use of Excel and presents some tips on MS education.

  • Earth-moving operation has a great impact on the overall budget and schedule of any heavy civil projects. More often than not, the operational decisions are made largely based on field personnel's experience and judgment. In particular, decisions on earth moving operations by scraper-dozer fleets have been heavily influenced by the following belief: "The longer a dozer pushes a scraper for loading, the better earth-moving productivity is gained by the fleet." Even though there is some truth to this notion, scraper-dozer earth moving operations involve a much complex process that requires a systematic analysis for predicting the maximum production. To this end, this paper presents a spreadsheet-based scraper-dozer fleet operation model for its production optimization. Various optimization techniques, including a genetic-algorithm method, are presented for comparison and each technique's pros and cons are discussed.

  • Many researcher uses simulation techniques for understanding the phenomenon and expecting the response. Simulation techniques have many advantages which is less time-consuming, easy to control constraints, and cheaper than experimental study. However Researches usually are not good at programming the model, it's hard to implement simulation model using computer language. They use spreadsheet program like Microsoft $excel^{TM}$ Although a spreadsheet program is good for modeling, it's cumbersome to describe expressions which consist of not variable name but location indicator. This study suggests the program which helps researcher developing model using graphical interface and variable name. For verifying usability, the model which is implemented by developed modeler were compared with by spreadsheet program.

  • In this study, we proposed a method to generate a maintenance documents for railway track through Construction Operations Building information exchange(COBie) which is a subset of Industry Foundation Classes(IFC), a data model for Building Information Modeling(BIM). In order to define the items necessary for railway track maintenance document generation, we analyzed the guideline of maintenance and management to track by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport(MLTM), and defined the way to refer to the information items in the COBie spreadsheet. The additional properties not supported in IFC, were created for generation of an Information model that reflecting maintenance information items of railway track by applying user-defined property set within the IFC framework. An IFC-based Information model reflecting the user-defined property was implemented through BIM software, and rail track maintenance information items were transferred to COBie spreadsheet according to the defined approach. It is tested that the information can be transferred from the IFC-based as-built model to the COBie spreadsheet, which can be used to generate the necessary documents for railway facility maintenance work.

  • Beam-column joints are a critical component of reinforced concrete frame structures. They are responsible for transferring forces between adjoining beams and columns while limiting story drifts and maintaining structural integrity. During severe loading, beam-column joints deform significantly, affecting, and sometimes governing, the overall response of frame structures. While most failure modes for beam and column elements are commonly considered in plastic-hinge-based global frame analyses, the beam-column joint failure modes, such as concrete shear and reinforcement bond slip, are frequently omitted. One reason for this is the dearth of published guidance on what type of hinges to use, how to derive the joint hinge properties, and where to place these hinges. Many beam-column joint models are available in literature but their adoption by practicing structural engineers has been limited due to their complex nature and lack of practical application tools. The objective of this study is to provide a comparative review of the available beam-column joint models and present a practical joint modeling approach for integration into commonly used global frame analysis software. The presented modeling approach uses rotational spring models and is capable of modeling both interior and exterior joints with or without transverse reinforcement. A spreadsheet tool is also developed to execute the mathematical calculations and derive the shear stress-strain and moment-rotation curves ready for inputting into the global frame analysis. The application of the approach is presented by modeling a beam column joint specimen which was tested experimentally. Important modeling considerations are also presented to assist practitioners in properly modeling beam-column joints in frame analyses.

  • Model-based decision support system (DSS) has acted as a crucial role in strengthening the business competitiveness by providing a way of modeling and solving real-world decision problems in a quantitative and scientific manner. It is even more important for trading OTC derivatives, which requires extensive financial-engineering expertise while actively reacting to the continuously changing financial market. This paper proposes a flexible model-based DSS architecture that can support user-friendly interface for executing and analyzing the models and can adapt to the changes of financial market seamlessly. For user-friendliness, we implement the user-interfaces (UIs) using Microsoft Excel, a very widely used spreadsheet program for its great generality and extensibility. Users can utilize the analysis results of DSS or reprocess them for their special needs through the UIs in the form of familiar spreadsheets easily. For adaptiveness to the markets, the proposed architecture is constructed based on the object-oriented concepts, which enables such changes as release of a new financial product can be updated into the system without any delay at the lowest cost. We investigate the practical benefits and limitations of the proposed architecture by a case study on the construction of Model-based Trading Support System (MTSS), performed by a commercial bank in Korea.
