  • Spatially resolved liquid volume fractions from a set of line-of-sight laser diffraction measurements for axisymmetric sprays generated from a pintle-type gasoline injector have been tomographically reconstructed by Abel transformation, Fourier transformation and onion peeling method. Spatially resolved liquid volume fractions classified into 32 size groups were translated characteristics of SI engine fuel sprays. These data were also obtained from the phase Doppler measurements for the same sprays. The comparison between laser deffraction measurements and transformation reconstructs more reasonable spatially resolved characteristics for axisymmetric sprays as well as for asymmetric sprays.

  • Nanofluids are that metallic or nonmetallic nanometer-sized particles are dispersed in liquid. They can be used in various fields to increase the heat transfer rate because the thermal conductivity of nanofluids can be increased significantly. Nanofluids may be used as a good alternative of coolants in spray cooling. This study conducted experiments to compare the characteristics of sprays between water and nanofluid sprays. The radial distributions of droplet velocities and diameters of water, 0.2% wt.(weight), and 0.5% wt. $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids at the pressure of 0.2 and 0.3 MPa were measured by laser doppler instruments. The radial distributions of droplet diameters and velocities at two axial positions with water and 0.2% wt. nanofluid sprays didn't show much difference. A big difference, however, was observed between 0.5% wt. nanofluid and water sprays. With the increase of the mass of nano-particles, the average droplet diameters were increased and the average droplet velocities were decreased.

  • A series of measurements and visualization to investigate the extingushiment of water sprays with pool fires is presented. Fire source is a small-scale pool burner with methanol, ethanol and gasoline. Measurements of temperature, O2, CO2, and CO concentrations along the plume centerline are carried out to observe pool structures without water sprays. Visualization by the Ar-ion laser sheet flow pattern of droplets of the sprays above the pool fires. It is observed than in the case of methanol and ethanol, water sprays continuously penetrate into the center of fuel surfaces. The gasoline pool fire allows intermittent penetration of water sprays because of pulsating characteristics of the gasoline flame. To evaluate the cooling effect of the fuel surface by the sprays, the temperature was measured at the fuel surface. As soon as the mists reach the fuel surface of methanol and ethanol, the temperatures of the fuel surface decrease rapidly below the boiling point, and then the fires are extinguished. Due to the application of mist upon the gasoline fire, though the fuel temperature decrease abruptly at the time of the injection, such a repid decrease do not continue till the extinction point.

  • It is an aim of this study to perform extensive numerical study for analyzing the anisotropic turbulence effects on spatial and temporal behaviors of droplet for impinging sprays. The turbulence model of Durbin is used for comparisons with the k-ε model. The turbulence-induced dispersions of droplets are considered to describe the anisotropy of turbulence effectively and spray/wall interactions are simulated using the model of Lee and Ryou. Present study investigates the overall and the internal structures of impinging diesel sprays such as spray shapes, radius and height of wall sprays, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), local droplet velocity, and local gas velocity and compared the results with experimental data by two adopted turbulence models. When the anisotropy effect of turbulence is included, better predictions for both gas and droplet tangential velocities are obtained, compared to the k-ε model. It is concluded that anisotropic effect of turbulence should be considered for simulating impinging diesel sprays.

  • The pressure-swirl atomizer is widely used for the injectors in liquid rocket engines thanks to its high performance atomization and broad stability margin range. Spray mixed-interaction is an important area of study especially in cases where the propellant is mixed by spray interaction after an oxidant and a fuel are discharged separately. This interaction of sprays results in a significant modification of the spray characteristics such as the spatial evolution of the sprays. Experiments are conducted by a photographic technique to quantify the merged angle of the interaction regions of sprays from two pressure-swirl injectors. The experimental results show that the merged angle is mainly determined by the momentum flux ratios between two swirled sprays.

  • A brief review of current status in the field of agricultural spray and future research challenges are presented. Researches on the pesticides sprays, pollen sprays, postharvest sprays, and biological control agent sprays among the various applications of agricultural spray were selected and reviewed. In the agrochemical sprays, the techniques to increase the deposition such as electrospray and reduce the drift such as introductions of drift retardants and of mechanical means are reviewed. The introduction of mechanical means includes low drift, air-assisted, air inclusion, shield or shroud assisted and pulse flow nozzles. For flat fan nozzles, the data of breakup length and thickness of liquid sheet are essential to understand the atomization processes and develop the transport model to target In the air-assisted spray technology to reduce drift, further works on the effect of application height on drift and air assistance on droplet size should be followed. In addition, methods for quantifying the included air in the air inclusion techniques are required. The atomization characteristics of biopesticides spray are not being elucidated and the formulations of biopesticides should be taken into account the spray characteristics of existing nozzle and sprayer. A few researches on the droplet size of fallout can be found in the literature. A combined technology with electrostatic method into one of method for the reduction of drift may be an effective strategy for increasing deposition and reducing drift. Only an integrated approach involving all stakeholders such as engineers, chemists, and biologists, etc. can result in improved application of agricultural spray.

  • An experiment was carried out on the structure of twin spray from pressurize-swirl nozzles, in order to investigate the effect of different size of spray nozzles on the characteristics of the overlap of two single sprays, for example, mean diameter, number density, and spatial distribution of flow rate. Using image processing method, the distributions of size and velocity of droplets of a single spray and twin spray were measured and compared to investigate the overlapping effect of two identical sprays. Comparing experimental results from a twin-spray with those from two-single sprays shows that the flow rate distribution of the twin-spray was concentrated around the midst of the overlapping region of two sprays. In this region, Sauter mean diameter (SMD) did not change much in the twin spray from 6032 nozzles, but it was smaller by 10 micrometers in the twin-spray than two-single sprays from 60063 nozzles. In spite of large difference in Weber numbers of the colliding sprays between the 60063 and 6032 nozzles, the phenomena did not have a big change in the overlapping region of twin spray. This shows that in the collision between droplets from two single spray in the overlapping region to cause the disruption of droplets, the size distribution of spray droplets was also important as well as Weber number.

  • Characteristics of sprays injected by gas/liquid coaxial atomizers operated at atmospheric pressure are studied using shadowgraph, mechanical patternator and PDPA. The gas-to- liquid momentum flux ratio(M) and the liquid Reynolds number(Re) are selected as key parameters in characteristics of gas/liquid coaxial sprays from the dimensional analysis. The properties of shear coaxial sprays are compared with those of swirl coaxial sprays through the macroscopic and microscopic analysis. Macroscopic similarities between shear and swirl coaxial sprays are revealed under flow conditions of high momentum flux ratio. Also, empirical correlations between the mean drop diameters(D32) and operating conditions of coaxial sprays are proposed in this paper.

  • The influence of fuel spray characteristics on engine performance has been known as one of the major concerns to Improve fuel economy and to reduce exhaust emissions. In general, the UBHC(Unburned Hydrocarbon) emission could be reduced by decreasing the droplet size of the fuel sprays. In PFI (Port Fuel Injection) gasoline engines, the mixture of air and fuel would not be uniform under a certain condition, because the breakup and production of spray droplets are made in a short distance between the fuel injector and intake valve sheat. In this study, were investigated the transient spray characteristics and dynamic behavior of droplets from 2holes-2sprays and 4holes-2sprays type injectors used in PFI gasoline engine. Mean droplet size and optical concentration were measured by LDPA (Laser Diffraction Particle size Analyzer). The variation of droplet mean diameter and optical concentration were measured for understanding the behavior of unsteady spray.
