The purpose of this study is to investigate the overall spray behavior characteristics for various injection conditions in a gasoline direct injection(GDI) injector with multi-hole. The spray characteristics, such as the spray penetration, the spray angle, and the injection quantity, were studied through the change of the injection pressure, the ambient pressure, and the energizing duration in a high-pressure chamber with a constant volume. The n-heptane with 99.5% purity was used as the test fuel. In a constant volume chamber, the injected spray was visualized by the spray visualization system, which consisted of the high-speed camera, the metal-halide lamp, the injector control device, and the image analysis system with the image processing program. It was revealed that the injection quantity was mainly affected by the difference between the injection pressure and the ambient pressure. For low injection pressure conditions, the injection quantity was decreased by the increase of the ambient pressure, while it nearly maintained regardless of the ambient pressure at high injection pressure. According to the increase of the ambient pressure in the constant volume chamber, the spray development became slow, consequently, the spray tip penetration decreased, and the spray area increased. In additions, the circular cone area decreased, and the vortex area increased.
Even though a relatively complete knowledge base has been established for diesel sprays, much of the knowledge cannot be directly translated to correlate the characteristics of gasoline spray. The macroscopic characteristics of gasoline impingement spray was investigated with photographic and image processing technique by Particle Motion Analysis System. The injector with single hole nozzle diameter of 0.28 mm was used in this experiment and the injection duration was selected as 10 msec. The injection pressure with 0.3, 0.35, and 0.4 MPa, impingement distance or 70, 100 and 130m, impingement angle or 0.15, 30 and $45^{\circ}$ were employed for the variables to affect the spray characteristics of impinging spray. It is clear that there is the analogy on the spray tip penetration between the gasoline impinging jet and diesel free jet. The spray tip penetration of impinging gasoline spray is proportional to the quarter power of the time after start of injection. The maximum height of impinging gasoline spray is also proportional to the quarter power of the time regardless of impingement distance, impingement angle and injection pressure. In addition, the effect of impingement angle on the spray tip penetration is significant according to the time after start of injection, even though there is minor effect in the initial stage of time after start of injection. Moreover, there is no remarkable effect of injection pressure on the spray tip Penetration under the experimental condition used in this study.
The static pressure distribution and flow characteristics inside the high-pressure swirl spray were investigated by measuring the static pressure inside the spray and applying the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The static pressure difference between inner and outer part of spray was measured at different axial locations and operating conditions using a piezo-resislive pressure transducer. To obtain the qualitative value of swirl motion at different operating conditions, the spray impact-pressure at the nozzle exit was measured using a piezo-electric pressure transducer, and the flow angle was measured using a microscopic imaging system. The flow characteristics inside the high pressure swirl spray was simulated by the 1-phase 3-dimensional CFD model. The effect of pressure alternations on spray development was discussed with macroscopic spray images and a mathematical liquid film model. The results showed that the static pressure drop is observed inside the swirl spray as a result of the dragged air motion and the centrifugal force of the air. The recirculation vortex inside the spray was also observed inside the swirl spray as a result of the adverse pressure gradient along the axial locations. The results of analytical liquid film model and macroscopic spray images showed that the static pressure structure is one of the main parameters affecting the swirl spray development.
An experimental study was carried out to understand the spray characteristics of three kinds(kerosene, heating oil & diesel) of hydrocarbon-fuels. Fuel temperature and injection pressure were main variables in the experiment. Fuel Temperature was changed to obtain various levels of fuel viscosity. Spray angle and spray length were measured by using LVS(Laser Vapor Screen) photographs. 1D PDPA system was used to measure droplet size & droplet velocity. In room temperature, spray characteristics of three kinds of fuels were good, especially in case the fuel injection pressure was more than $6Kgf/cm^2$ It was also found that spray characteristics were poor in case fuel kinematic viscosity was more than 5cSt.

The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure have been investigated in high temperature and pressure field. To analyze the structure of evaporative diesel spray is important in speculation of mixture formation process. Also emissions of diesel engines can be controlled by the analyzed results. Therefore, this study examines the evaporating spray structure by using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 72 MPa to 112 MPa with a high pressure injection system(ECD-U2). The PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was used to capture flow variation of the evaporative diesel spray. A study on the mixture formation process of diesel spray was executed by the results of flow analysis in this study. Consequentially the large-scale vortex flow could be found in downstream spray and the formed vortex governs the mixture formation process in diesel spray.
This study was carried out to analyze the spray characteristics as a function of the operating parameters of urea injector used in Urea-SCR system of passenger diesel vehicle. Spray visualization and PDPA experiment were performed to analyze the macroscopic spray development and atomization performance of urea-water-solution. For the urea injector, the deformation of the spray head does not appear to be significant because it operates at a low pressure conditions, and the liquid core and primary droplet are observed throughout the operating conditions. No increase in atomization is seen when the operating pressure is increased, and the spray develops linearly due to poor atomization characteristics. The macroscopic spray behavior of the low-pressure urea injector is predictable through the modification of the Hiroyasu equation.

An experimental study was conducted to understand spray characteristics of rotating fuel nozzle by using high speed rotational system. The experimental apparatus consist of a fuel injection system, high speed rotational system, and acrylic case. The test is performed with several diameters and number of injection orifices. Spray characteristics such as droplet size and velocity are measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer). From the test results, we could understand the spray characteristics of rotating fuel nozzle with orifice number and diameter.
The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated. The analysis of liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel is important for emissions control of diesel engines. Therefore, this work examines the evaporating spray structure using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 72MPa to 112MPa by using a common rail injection system(ECD-U2). The images of liquid and vapor phase in the evaporating free diesel spray are simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As a result, it can be confirmed that the distribution of vapor concentration is more uniform in the case of the high injection than in that of the low injection pressure.
Circumstances require improving diesel engine, and many studies have been done in constant volume chamber(CVC). Because the combustion mechanism of a diesel engine has many difficulties with non-homogeneous nature, there has been a limitation to analyzing the combustion mechanism with CVC. Studies are often given in a real engine, but also it has difficulties in modifying configuration of combustion chamber etc. To get more easy way for mote engine-like test, a rapid compression mechanism has been introduced. This study addresses to designing a rapid compression expansion machine(RCEM) driven by compressed air, and to applying it on IDI diesel combustion chamber which has a glow plug. RCEM is introduced first and its characteristics are tested, then spray/combustion characteristics of diesel spray impinging on a glow plug in RCEM combustion chamber are investigated. The results show active combustion in the system employing spray impinging on a glow plug so as to improve combustion efficiency.
This paper describes the atomization characteristics, as well as the velocity and size distribution, of DME spray based on common-rail injection system. To analyze the possibility of using DME fuel as an alternative fuel of diesel, spray atomization characteristics were investigated. For this investigation, two-dimensional phase Doppler analyzer system was used to obtain droplet size and velocity distribution simultaneously. Velocity and droplet size measurements were performed at various injection pressures. Results showed that increasing pressure from 25MPa to 50MPa leads to higher spray droplet velocities and smaller droplet diameter but injection pressure above 40MPa, no signifiant reduction was observed. With the droplet velocity and SMD comparison between diesel and DME fuel, it can be observed that DME has smaller SMD and droplet velocity due to its low surface tension.
