Effect of Processing Parameters and Powder Size on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Y2O3 Coatings Fabricated by Suspension Plasma Spray

  • The suspension plasma spray (SPS) technique has been used to obtain dense $Y_2O_3$ coatings and to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional air plasma spray (APS). SPS uses suspensions containing micrometer or sub-micrometer sized powders dispersed in liquid media. In this study, microstructure developments and mechanical properties have been investigated as functions of particle size of source material and plasma processing parameters such as plasma power and stand-off distance. The microstructure of the coating was found to be highly related to the particle size and the plasma processing parameters, and it was directly reflected in the hardness and the adhesion strength. When fine powder (BET $16.4m^2/g$) was used as a raw material in the suspension, there was, with increasing stand-off distance, a change from a dense structure with a slightly bumpy surface to a porous structure with a cauliflower-like surface. On the other hand, when a coarse powder (BET $2.8m^2/g$) was used, the coating density was lower, with microscopic splats on the surface. Using fine $Y_2O_3$ powders, the coating layer with an optimum short stand-off distance showed a high hardness of approximately 90% of that of sintered $Y_2O_3$ and an adhesion strength several times higher than that of the coating by conventional APS.

  • In the cylinder of gasoline direct injection engines, the spray targeting from injectors is of great significance for fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The automotive industry is putting a lot of effort into improving injector targeting accuracy. To improve the targeting accuracy of injectors, it is necessary to develop models that can predict the spray targeting positions. When developing spray targeting models, the most used technique is computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Recently, due to the superiority of machine learning in prediction accuracy, the application of machine learning in this field is also receiving constant attention. The purpose of this study is to build a machine learning model that can accurately predict spray targeting based on the design parameters of injectors. To achieve this goal, this study firstly used laser sheet beam visualization equipment to obtain many spray cross-sectional images of injectors with different parameters at different injection pressures and measurement planes. The spray images were processed by MATLAB code to get the targeting coordinates of sprays. A total of four models were used for the prediction of spray targeting coordinates, namely ANN, LSTM, Conv1D and Conv1D & LSTM. Features fed into the machine learning model include injector design parameters, injection conditions, and measurement planes. Labels to be output from the model are spray targeting coordinates. In addition, the spray data of 7 injectors were used for model training, and the spray data of the remaining one injector were used for model performance verification. Finally, the prediction performance of the model was evaluated by R2 and RMSE. It is found that the Conv1D&LSTM model has the highest accuracy in predicting the spray targeting coordinates, which can reach 98%. In addition, the prediction bias of the model becomes larger as the distance from the injector tip increases.

드론 방제 살포 효율 개선을 위한 하향풍 및 액적 퇴적 분포 분석 (Analysis of Drone Downwash and Droplet Deposition for Improved Aerial Spraying Efficiency in Agriculture)

  • With the advancement of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) technology, aerial spraying has been rapidly increasing in the agricultural field. Drones offer many advantages compared to traditional applicators, but they pose challenges such as spray drift risk and spray uniformity. To address these issues, it is essential to understand the characteristics of complex airflow generated by drones and its consequences for the spray performance. This study aims to identify the air velocity distribution of drone downwash and the resulting spray deposition distribution on the ground, ultimately proposing optimized spraying widths and criteria. Experiments were conducted using two agricultural drones with different propeller arrangements under various flight and measurement conditions. The results showed that during hovering, the downward airflow affected the area within a distance of the radius of the blade (R) from the center of the drone. When the drone was flying, the downward airflow was effective up to a distance of 2R. Droplet deposition was concentrated at the center of the drone during hovering. However, during flying, the droplet deposition was more evenly distributed up to the distance of R. The drone downwash and droplet deposition were significantly different during flying compared to the hovering state. At an effective spray width of 3R, the coefficient of variation (CV) was generally less than 16%, indicating a significant improvement in spray uniformity. These findings help optimize effective spraying techniques in drone-based applications.

  • Boron carbide coating has some very attractive properties for nuclear and semiconductor industry. The potential of atmosheric plasma spray as manufacturing methods for $B_4C$ coating was discussed. In this work, the boron carbide coating with low porosity, high microhardness and good life of thermal shock resistance was deposited by the control of spraying distance. The relationship between the properties of $B_4C$ coatings and their spraying distance was studied.

  • Numerical study on the impingement process and the fuel film formation of the hollow-cone fuel spray was conducted under vaporization condition, and the effect of the wall cavity angle on spray-wall impingement structure was investigated. A detailed understanding of this phenomena will help in designing injection systems and controlling the strategies to improve engine performance and exhaust emissions of the Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine. The improved Abramzon model was used to model the spray vaporization process and the Gosman model was adopted for modeling of spray-wall impingement process. The calculated results of the spray-wall impingement process were compared with experimental results. The velocity field of the ambient gas, the Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) and the generated fuel film on the wall, which are difficult to obtain by the experimental method, were also calculated and discussed. It was found that the radial distance after the wall impingement and the SMD decreased with increasing the cavity angle and the temperature.

  • 아음속 횡방향 유동에 대한 수직 분사시 액적영역에 대한 내부 유동의 효과에 대하여 실험을 수행하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 액적영역의 내부유동 현상에 대하여 관찰하고, 이전 연구에 대하여 액적영역의 궤적을 확인하는 것이다. 실험을 통하여 액적영역의 궤적은 모멘텀 플럭스 비(q), 인젝터 지름에 대한 하류방향 거리비(x/d)에 의하여 결정되며, 인젝터 내부유동이 액적영역의 분무특성에 큰 영향을 미침을 확인하였다.

  • The pupose of this study is to measure droplet size and velocity simultaneously for a transient diesel fuel spray in a quiescent chamber at atmospheric temperature and pressure. Generally, diesel combustion phenomena is mainly governed by characteristics of injection system and fuel spray. Therefore we need to clarify these characteristics for developing more economical diesel systems. In this study, correlation between droplet size and velocity was measured at downstream distance from nozzle. Governing parameters are pump speed and fuel quantity for the detailed nature in this transient diesel fuel spray. It is observed effect to the droplet size and velocity distribution. Velocity(peak, mean, rms), number density and droplet size were investigated simulaneously using PDA in the spray. Various results are presented to illustrate the effects of operation factors and correlation between the droplet diameter and velocity.

분무건조 및 대기 플라즈마 용사에 의한 지르코니아 열차폐 코팅재의 제조 및 평가 (Fabrication and Characterization of Zirconia Thermal Barrier Coatings by Spray Drying and Atmospheric Plasma Spraying)

  • In this study, we prepared yttria stabilized zirconia granules for thermal barrier coatings using a spray drying process. First, we characterized the properties of granules such as flow rate and packing density for utilizing the air plasma spray process. The flow rate and packing density data showed 0.732 g/sec and 2.14 $g/cm^3$, respectively, when we used larger and denser particles, which are better than hollow granules or smaller spherical granules. Second, we chose larger, spherical granules fabricated in alcohol solvent as starting powders and sprayed it on the bondcoat/nimonic alloy by an atmospheric plasma spray process varying the process parameters, the feeding rate, gun speed and spray distance. Finally, we evaluated representative thermal and mechanical characteristics. The thermal expansion coefficients of the coatings were $11{\sim}12.7{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and the indentation stress measured was 2.5 GPa at 0.15 of indentation strain.

디젤 충돌 분무의 발달 과정 및 내부 유동 특성 (Internal Structure and Velocity Field of the Impinging Diesel Spray on the Wall)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the internal structure of the impinged diesel spray at various experimental conditions. To examine the effect of various factors on the development of a diesel spray impinging on the wall, experiments were conducted at the various Injection pressures, wall distances from the nozzle tip and angles of wall inclination. The PIV system consists of a double pulsed Nd:YAG laser was utilized to analyze the internal flow structure of impinged diesel sprays. The velocity fields from the PIV system were compared with the results measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer(PDPA)system. The results show that internal flow pattern of the impinged spray was similar with the results from the PDPA system. The radial velocity of the impinged spray was increased with the increase in the injection pressure and near the nozzle-wall distance. The generation of vortex was also promoted with the Increase in angles of wall inclination.

  • Multi-nozzle spray painting procedure of the inorganic zinc shop primer was established in order to obtain uniform film thickness. The shop primer paint prevents the corrosion of steel block during shipbuilding. When the dry film thickness of shop primer is insufficient, rust will be generated on the steel block. Otherwise, thick coating of shop primer may be a problem of weld defect. So, it is important to obtain the uniform film thickness of shop primer. The uniformity of dry film thickness is affected by spray speed, distance from spray gun to target surface and overlapping span of spray path. In order to uniformly maintain coating thickness of shop primer, the coating procedure was established based on the correlation of shop primer spray variables.
