Dimethyl ether (DME) as an alternative fuel for compression ignition engine was investigated by measuring spray development processes, injection rate profiles, engine performance, and exhaust emission characteristics. The results of DME fueled engine were compared with those obtained by fueled with diesel. The experimental results showed that DME has approximately 0.03ms shorter injection delay and higher maximum injection rate than those of diesel fuel at a constant injection pressure of 50MPa. The spray visualization indicates that DME has shorter spray tip penetration due to its low density and faster evaporation. The combustion characteristics of DME operated engine provided faster ignition delay and three times shorter combustion duration. It is believed that the better evaporation and atomization characteristic of DME contributes the faster combustion. At all operating condition, soot emission was not detected due to the clean combustion of DME.
In the present study, in order to understand the overall spray combustion characteristics of DME fuel as well as to identify the distinctive differences of DME combustion processes against the conventional hydrocarbon liquid fuels, the sequence of the comparative analysis have been systematically made for DME and n-heptane liquid fuels. To realistically represent the physical processes involved in the spray combustion, this studyemploys the hybrid breakup model, the stochastic droplet tracking model, collision model, high-pressure evaporation model, and transient flamelet model with detailed chemistry. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made in terms of the autoignition, spray combustion processes, flame structure, and turbulence-chemistry interaction in the n-heptane and DME fueled spray combustion processes.
This Paper addresses to spray characteristics in w-shaped diesel engine combustion chamber which has impingement parts for 4 sprays injected from an injector. The two-dimensional shapes have been chosen to avoid the difficulties for analysing the spray dynamics in the real chamber. The simple shapes are reproduced with same geometries in vertical or horizontal sections through the impingement lands. The spray developments are visualized with a high speed drum camera and shadowgraphy optical system, and the droplet sizes are measured by Malvern system. The detailed discussions m made for the two different combustion chamber shapes, which are new w-shape using spray wall impaction and general w-shape. The results show that the spray characteristics of the new shape are superior to those of the general w-shape.
The vaporization characteristics and spray combustion processes in the high-pressure environment are numerically investigated. This study employ the high-pressure vaporization model together with the state-of-art spray submodels. The present high-pressure vaporization model can account for transient liquid heating, circulation effect inside the droplet forced convection, Stefan flow effect, real gas effect and ambient gas solubility in the liquid droplets. Computations are carried out for the evaporating sprays, the evaporating and burning sprays, and the spray combustion processes of the turbocharged diesel engine. Numerical results indicate that the high-pressure effects are quite crucial for simulating the spray combustion processes including vaporization, spray dynamics, combustion, and pollutant formation.

The present study is mainly motivated to numerically simulate the autoignition and combustion process of a diesel spray in RCM and effects of design parameters on combustion and engine performance in the DI diesel engine using EGR. In case of the burning spray in RCM, special emphasis is given to the autoignition process coupled with the fluid mechanics and chemical reaction. Computations are carried out for a wide range of operating condition in terms of temperature, concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide of the intake gas in the DI diesel engine. Numerical results indicate that the mixing process along the edges of spray jet has a crucial role for autoignition and combustion process. Temperature and concentration of O2 and CO2 of intake gas significantly influence the combustion characteristics and engine performance in the diesel/EGR environment.
The purpose of this investigation is to carry out, the influence factor on the fuel spray characteristics for improve the engine combustion performance and exhaust omission in direct injection type diesel engine. The fuel properties, fuel spray structure and the shape or the piston surface of diesel engine play an important role of engine combustion process and exhaust emission. In order to obtain the effect of using auxiliary chamber and emulsified fuel on the fuel spray characteristics the experiment un conduct with single cylinder direct injection type diesel engine to examine the engine performance and gas emission. The results of this investigation showed that the increase auxiliary chamber volume and emulsified fuel give an effect on the fuel spray characteristics by reduced the concentration of nitric oxide emission in the combustion chamber. Also it can improve the combustion characteristics such as cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise and rate of heat release.
In this work, numerical parametric studies on spray combustion have been conducted. In simulation of turbulence, RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}model$ is adopted. Initial spray distribution is specified by Rosin-Rammler distribution function. Eddy break-up model is adopted as a combustion model. The parameters considered are inlet air temperature, swirl number, and SMD. With higher inlet air temperature, the axial velocities are increased and penetration of primary jet is stronger than that of lower inlet air temperature and temperature at the exit of combustor is more uniform. Combustion efficiency is improved with high inlet air temperature. The effect of swirl number on flow field is not significant. It affect only recirculation zone. So temperature at upstream of combustor is influenced. Combustion efficiency deteriorate as SMD of fuel spray increase.

A numerical study for spray flow of fuel and oxidizer droplets in the combustion chamber has been conducted prior to the analysis of spray combustion of the liquid rocket engine. As the spray combustion model, DSF model and Euler-Lagrange scheme have been used. While the coupling effects of the droplets between gas phase and evaporated vapor have been calculated using PSIC model, SIMPLER algorithm and QUICK scheme have been used as numerical schemes. As the results, the calculations have shown velocity and temperature distribution in combustion chamber as well as mole fraction of fuel and oxidizer.

This experimental study was conducted to investigate macroscopic characteristics of the flash boiling spray with tow component mixing fuel. Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is a newer combustion method for internal combustion engines to reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter simultaneously. But it is difficult to put this combustion method to practical use in an engine because of such problems as instability of combustion in low load operating conditions and knocking in high load operating conditions. In HCCI, combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions depend on conditions of air/fuel mixture and chemical reactions of fuel molecules. The fuel design approach is achieved by mixing two components which differ in properties such as density, viscosity, volatility, ignitability and so on. We plan to apply the fuel design approach to HCCI combustion generated in a real engine, and examine the possibility of mixture formation control using the flash boiling spray. Spray characteristics of two component fuel with a flash boiling phenomenon was investigated using Shlieren and Mie scattering photography. Test fuel was injected into a constant volume vessel at ambient conditions imitated injection timing BTDC of a real engine. As a result, it was found that a flash boiling phenomenon greatly changed spray structure, especially in the conditions of lower temperature and density. Therefore, availability of mixture formation control using flash boiling spray was suggested.
Thermal spray technology has been used in many industrial application. Especially, thermal spray coating have been employed with the purposes of achieving better resistances in abrasion, heat and corrosion. In the previous studies on the thermal spray coating, thermal spray characteristics from the perspective of combustion engineering have not been investigated sufficiently, while the material characteristics of the coated substrates have been investigated widely. In this study, the effect of spray particles on the flame behavior was experimentally investigated. The amount of the injected particles was measured using the light scattering method and the temperature of the particles was estimated using a two-color method. Various flame-spray interactions were observed and it was found that the high temperature zone near the flame is elongated by particles density. Based on these results, the applicability of the light scattering method and the two-color method was discussed.
