Investigating the Cause of Hindrance to the Interfacial Bonding of INCONEL 718 Layer Deposited by Kinetic Spray Process (저온 분사 공정을 이용해 적층된 INCONEL 718의 계면접합 저해요인 분석)

  • The cost for maintenance (replacement cost) of Ni-superalloy components in plant industry is very expensive because of high unit price of INCONEL 718. A development of repairing technology using kinetic spray process can be very helpful for reducing the maintenance cost. However, it is very difficult to produce well-deposited INCONEL 718 layer showing high interfacial bond strength via kinetic spraying. Thus, INCONEL 718 was deposited on SCM 440 substrate and the interfacial properties were investigated, in order to elucidate the cause of hindrance to the bonding between INCONEL 718 layer and SCM 440 substrate. As a result, it was revealed that the dominant obstacle to the interfacial bonding was excessive compressive residual stress accumulated in the coating layer, resulting from low plastic-deformation susceptibility of INCONEL 718. Nevertheless, the bonding state was enhanced by the post heat-treatment through relieving the residual stress and generating a diffusion/metallurgical bonding between the INCONEL 718 deposit and SCM 440 substrate.

Cavitation Damage Characteristics of Al and Zn Arc Thermal Spray Coating Layers for Hull Structural Steel (선체 구조용 강재에 대한 Al과 Zn 아크용사코팅 층의 캐비테이션 손상 특성)

  • In this study, Al and Zn arc thermal spray coatings were carried out onto the substrate of SS400 steel to improve corrosion resistance and durability of hull structural steel for ship in marine environment. Therefore cavitation-erosion test was conducted to evaluate the durability of painted and thermal spray coated specimens. And then the damaged surface morphology and weight loss were obtained to compare with each other, respectively. As a result, the painted specimen was the poorest cavitation resistance characteristics because surface damage behavior appeared to be exfoliated in bulk shape during the cavitation experiment. And Zn thermal spray coating layer presented the significant surface damage depth due to relatively low surface hardness and local cavitation damage tendency. On the other hand, as a result of the weight loss analysis, the painting layer presented the poorest cavitation resistance and the Al thermal spray coating layer relatively showed the best results after cavitation experiment.

Fabrication and Microstructure/Properties of Bulk-type Tantalum Material by a Kinetic Spray Process (Kinetic Spray 공정을 이용한 벌크형 탄탈륨 소재의 제조 및 미세조직/물성)

  • A bulk-type Ta material is fabricated using the kinetic spray process and its microstructure and physical properties are investigated. Ta powder with an angular size in the range $9-37{\mu}m$ (purity 99.95%) is sprayed on a Cu plate to form a coating layer. As a result, ~7 mm-sized bulk-type high-density material capable of being used as a sputter material is fabricated. In order to assess the physical properties of the thick coating layer at different locations, the coating material is observed at three different locations (surface, center, and interface). Furthermore, a vacuum heat treatment is applied to the coating material to reduce the variation of physical properties at different locations of the coating material and improve the density. OM, Vickers hardness test, SEM, XRD, and EBSD are implemented for analyzing the microstructure and physical properties. The fabricated Ta coating material produces porosity of 0.11~0.12%, hardness of 311~327 Hv, and minor variations at different locations. In addition, a decrease in the porosity and hardness is observed at different locations upon heat treatment.

  • This work presents functionally graded coatings (FGC) of hydroxyapatite (HA) and metallic powders on Ti-6Al-4V implants using plasma spray coating method. HA has been the most frequently used coating material due to its excellent compatibility with human bones. However, because of the abrupt changes in thermomechanical properties between HA and the metallic implant across an interface, and residual stress induced on cooling from coating temperture to room temperature, debonding at the interface occurs in use sometimes. In this work, FGC of HA and Ti or Ti-alloy powders is made to mitigate the abrupt property changes at the interface and the effect of FGC on residual stress release is investigated by evaluating the mechanical bond strength between the implant and the HA coating layers. Thermal annealing is done after coating in order to crystallize the HA coating layer which tends to have amorphous structure during thermal spray coating. The effects of types and compositional ratio of metallic powders in FGC and annealing conditions on the bond strength are also evaluated by strength tests and the microstructure analysis of coating layers and interfaces. Finally, biocompatibility of the coating layers are tested under ISO 10993-5.

  • Poly (vinylidene fluoride) thin films were deposited by a spray-coating technology. Two organic solvents with different boiling point were used to prepare the mixture solution for spray coating process: N-Methylpyrrolodone ($B.P.=202^{\circ}C$); Tetrahydrofuran ($B.P.=66^{\circ}C$). Post-deposition annealing temperature was varied for the spray-coated Poly(vinylidene fluoride) thin films. Structural characteristics of the thin films were comparatively investigated by FT-IR and XRD in relation with the organic solvent and post-deposition annealing temperature.

Analysis for Shielding Effectiveness of EMI Spray Coating Layers in 3D Structure (3차원 구조에서 EMI 스프레이 코팅막의 차폐효과 분석)

  • The shielding effectiveness (SE) of the EMI spray coating film was measured in a three-dimensional structure. The shielding effectiveness was measured by AST D4935 using coaxial type TEM cell. A standard sample of the cylindrical slab is fabricated to measure the shielding effectiveness using the ASTM D4935. At this time, spray coating was performed by bonding a three-dimensional structure with NAND flash memory to a standard sample. In the case of spray coating, it was uniformly coated not only on the horizontal plane but also on the vertical plane of the three-dimensional structure. As a result of measurement, shielding effectiveness of maximum 59 dB was measured in a three-dimensional structure similar to the case without three-dimensional structure. As a result, it was confirmed that the spray coating can be uniformed even in the three-dimensional structure.

  • Aerosol slurry composed of dielectric materials, distilled water, and deflocculants was sprayed on the substrates, through a high-pressure spray gun as an aerosol. The coated layers were cofired together with $Al_{2}O_{3}$ substrates and green sheets on which the inner connectors were printed. Although the coating rate of coated layers strongly depended on slurry viscosity, spray shape, and the pressure of the spray gun, the coated density was not changed. Buried conductors were maintained as printed by high pressure spray coating method, because the pressing process was not used. At the optimum condition of air controller step 3-4 and slurry viscosity c.p 2000-4000, dense and uniform layers could be achieved. Comparing with conventional lamination process using green sheets, spray coating method enabled thin dielectric layers of $20{\sim}50{\mu}m$.

  • The purpose of this work is to coat ZrO$_{2}$ - 8Y$_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramic on the Al cast alloy(AC-8A) by using the plasma spray method. Two types of coatings which were composed of two and three layer coating were examined. Each coating powder was analyzed for shape and size distribution and X-ray diffraction pattern. For the coated layers, microstructural analysis and performance estimation which was composed of static thermal test, thermal cyclic test and thermal shock test were conducted.

  • Carbon nanotube (CNT) aluminum composite coatings were built up through kinetic spraying process. Deposition behavior of CNT aluminum composite on an aluminum 1050 alloy substrate was analyzed based on deposition mechanism of kinetic spraying. The microstructure of CNT aluminum composite coating were observed and analyzed. Also, the electrical resistivity, bond strength and micro-hardness of the CNT aluminum composite coatings were measured and compared to kinetic sprayed aluminum coatings. The CNT aluminum composite coatings have a dense structure with low porosity. Compared to kinetic sprayed aluminum coating, the CNT aluminum composite coatings present lower electrical resistivity and higher micro-hardness due to high electrical conductivity and dispersion hardening effects of CNTs.

Process Optimization of Thermal-sprayed STS316 Coating (STS316 용사코팅의 최적 공정 설계)

  • In the present study, process optimization for thermal-sprayed STS316 coating has been performed using $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array and analysis of variance (ANOVA). STS316 coatings were fabricated by flame spray process on steel substrate, and the hardness test and microstructure observation of the coatings were studied. The results of hardness test were analyzed by ANOVA. The ANOVA results showed that the spray distance had the greatest effect on hardness of the coating, on the other hands, the effects of oxygen gas flow and spray distance were ignorable. From these results, the optimal combination of the flame spray parameters could be derived, and confirmation experiment was carried out to verify these derived results. The calculated hardness of the coatings by ANOVA was found to approximately close to that of confirmation experimental result. Thus, it was considered that design of experiments using orthogonal array and ANOVA was effective for process optimization of thermal-sprayed STS316 coating.
