  • The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors, solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type, with different electric driving characteristics So, three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were used in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. Also the CFD analysis was carried out for fuel behavior under high pressure in between needle and nozzle of solenoid-driven injector to know the condition of initial injection at experiment test. It was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection and temperature of injected fuel and electrical characteristic of the driven injector.

  • Mixture formation is one of the significant factors to improve combustion performance of an spark ignition engine. This is affected by spray and atomization characteristics of injector. In the case of EGI system, air-fuel mixing period is so short that a lot of fuel-film and liquid-fuel flow into cylinder. Since this fuel-film is not burnt perfectly in cylinder, it is exhausted in the form of HC emission. In this paper, three measurement techniques were utilized to measure spray characteristics and the amount of fuel-film in the cylinder. At first, PMAS was used to measure the spray characteristics such as size distributions, SMD, and spray angle. Secondly the amount and distribution of fuel-film which flow into through intake valve could be measured quantitatively using the fuel-film measuring device. And lastly, by optical fiber type spark plug used to detect the diffusion flame, the amount of unburned HC was measured. As the result of these experiments, the information of optimal spray characteristics and injection condition to minimize fuel-film could be built up.

  • 액체로켓엔진 연소실의 연소특성은 인젝터의 성능에 지대한 영향을 받는다. 본 논문은 소형 액체로 켓엔진 인젝터의 분사성능 고찰을 위해 이중모드 위상도플러속도계를 이용하여 분사압력 및 분무의 횡단방향 이동거리 변화에 따라 액적의 속도, Sauter 평균직경, 난류강도와 같은 분무특성 매개변수를 측정한다. 또, Weber 수와 Reynolds 수를 활용하여 인젝터 분무의 미립화 및 난류특성을 규명한다.

  • 산화제 과잉 예연소기는 고성능 closed cycle 액체추진로켓 시스템에 적용된다. 이러한 산화제 과잉 연소기는 산화제-연료 혼합비가 약 50이상에서 작동하므로, 예연소기에서 분무특성과 혼합성능이 연소 안정성에 큰 영향을 주게 된다 본 연구에서는 예연소기에 적용 가능한 분사기를 설계하고, 유량측정, 가시화 실험을 수행하여 예연소기 분사기의 분무특성을 연구하기로 한다.

Development and Verification Test of a Bi-propellant Thruster Using Hydrogen Peroxide and Kerosene

  • This paper describes development procedure and verification test results of a bi-propellant thruster using hydrogen peroxide and kerosene. The design thrust of the thruster is about 500 N and six swirl type coaxial injectors were used. The passage type manifolds were employed for the injector head to reduce the response time. The passage was designed to minimize stagnation points and recirculation region to ensure uniform flow distribution and sufficient cooling performance through flow analysis using Fluent. A catalytic igniter using hydrogen peroxide was installed at the center of the injector head. The propellant feeding and spray characteristics were confirmed by hydraulic tests. Combustion tests were performed on design and off-design points to analyze combustion characteristics under various mixture ratio conditions. The combustion test results show that combustion efficiency was over 95 % and chamber pressure fluctuation were less than 1.5 % under all test conditions.

Dual Swirl 인젝터의 성능 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Performance Evaluation of Dual Swirl Injectors)

  • Both numerical analysis and experiment of cold and hot tests were performed to obtain basic design data for the swirl coaxial type Injector and to predict the combustion performance. Mass distribution, mixing distribution, mixing efficiency, characteristic velocity efficiency were measured by the cold tests and numerical analysis using the commercial thermo-hydraulic program. Test and analysis variables were recess, pressure drop, velocity ratio, mixing spray, mixture ratio. Hot tests were performed for the Uni-element injector to compare the performance with the cold test results, and, hot tests for Multi-element injector were performed to compare the performance with Uni-element injector. Designed thrust of the Uni-element injector liquid rocket was 35kgf at sea level and combustion chamber pressure, 20bar. Kerosene and Lox were used as a propellant.

전극위치에 따른 전기장 내 프로판 예혼합 화염의 특성 (Characteristics of Premixed Propane Flame in Electric Field according to Electrode Position)

  • Electric field assisted combustion is a method that reduces instability in lean combustion. In this study investigated the effects of electrode position on propane-air flame characteristic using a ring electrode. Results showed that burning velocity was not affected by electrode position, but positive voltage expanded the flammability limit while negative voltage contracted it. The effect of voltage polarity on the flammability limit decreased as the electrode position increased. Expanding the flammability limit with a positive voltage can reduce NOx emissions.

충돌형 Quadlet 인젝터의 연소성능 예측에 관한 실험적 연구 (An experimental study for the prediction of combustion performance of the Unlike Impinging Quadlet Injector)

  • Unlike impinging Quadlet injector(OOOF type)에 대한 혼합효율, 혼합특성속도, 혼합특성속도효율을 연소성능을 예측하기 위해 비연소 실험을 통하여 구하였다. 모의 추진제는 물($H_2$O)와 케로신($CH_{1.97}$)을 사용하였고, 혼합상관인자로써 산화제, 연료 분류의 운동량비를 사용하였다. 인젝터 분무특성을 파악하기 위해 오리피스(orifice) 각 hole에 대한 유량계수, 분무형상, 질량분포 획득이 수행되어졌다. 연구 결과, 침투깊이는 혼합효율, 혼합특성속도, 혼합특성속도 효율에 영향을 미침을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 혼합효율 및 혼합특성속도 효율은 MR=1.67(TMR=2.5)에서 87%로 최대값을 가지며 산화제 과잉상태보다 연료 과잉상태에서 더 큰 감소율을 보였다.

  • 산화제 과잉 예연소기는 고성능 닫힘형 액체추진로켓 시스템에 적용된다. 이러한 산화제 과잉 연소기는 산화제-연료 혼합비가 약 50이상에서 작동하므로, 예연소기에서 분무특성과 혼합성능이 연소 안정성에 큰 영향을 주게 된다. 본 연구에서는 예연소기에 적용 가능한 분사기를 설계하고, 유량측정 및 가시화 실험을 통해 연료 및 산화제의 분무각을 측정하고, Recess length에 따른 분무특성의 변화를 확인하여 산화제 과잉 예연소기 분사기의 분무특성을 연구하였으며, 이러한 실험결과는 산화제 과잉 예연소기 분사기를 설계할 수 있는 기초자료로 유용하게 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

워터미스트 작동에 의한 산소저공급 실내화재 특성 변화에 대한 수치해석 연구 (Numerical Study on the Change in Fire Characteristic as Operating Water-mist in Under-ventilated Compartments)

  • The present article reports a numerical study on the fire characteristic change by water-mist in under-ventilated compartments. The natural gas and heptane pool fires are used as fire sources, which are located in the bottom center of the 2/5 reduced-scaled model of the ISO 9705 standard room. The fire modeling using the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) is validated by comparison with previously published experimental results. For temperature and combustion gas concentrations at two positions located in the upper layer of compartment, the predicted results with and without water-mist are compared each other. The results show that under the water-mist operation, the predicted temperature and carbon monoxide concentration reduce as $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ and about 20%, respectively, compared to those without water-mist.
