Experiments have been conducted to investigate the effects of emulsified fuels on the spray characteristics and exhaust emissions in a diesel engine. Four different fuels were examined : diesel, emulsified fuels with water contents which were varied with 13, 15, and l7wt%. Characteristics of fuel spray were measured by an optical method, PLLIF(planar liquid laser induced fluorescence). Compared to diesel fuel, emulsified fuels which had relatively high kinematic viscosity showed smaller spray angle and longer spray tip penetration. The qualitative droplet distributions of emulsified fuels showed worse atomization process than that of diesel fuel. As the water contents were increased, PM and NOx could be reduced simultaneously. It was specially noted that the emulsified fuel with l7wt% water content was found to be the best in reducing rates, NOx 30% and PM 40%.

The purpose of this study is to improve the prediction ability of the atomization and vaporization processes of GDI spray. Several models have been introduced and compared. The atomization process was modeled using hybrid breakup model that is composed of Linearized Instability Sheet Atomization (LISA) model and Aerodynamically Progressed TAB (APTAB) model. The vaporization process was modeled using Spalding model and Abramzon & Sirignano model. Exciplex fluorescence method was used for comparing calculated with experimental results. The experiment and computation were performed at the ambient pressure of 0.1 MPa, 0.5 MPa and 1.0 MPa and the ambient temperature of 293k and 473k. Comparison of calculated and experimental spray characteristics was carried out and the calculated results of GDI spray showed good agreement with experimental results.

A piezo-driven injector was applied with a purpose to evaluate the effect of induced voltage on spray characteristics. For this, injection rate, macroscopic imaging, ambient gas entrainment and particle sizing were carried out. It was shown that initial slope of injection rate was steeper as induced voltage increased, while slope of injection rate became mostly constant with fully opened needle. From macroscopoic imaging, longer spray tip penetration was produced with higher induced voltage. Moreover, wider spray angle was detected in the early stage of spray development, when higher induced voltage was applied. Ambient air entrainment rate was increased and particle size was reduced with higher induced voltage.
To develop the twin-fluid atomizer having the excellent performance of painting, the spray characteristics of how a wide area can be painted efficiently by one time spraying were studied in this paper. Spray phenomena are affected by the many factors determining the spray field such as the spraying pressure of gas, the spraying pressure and viscosity of liquid paints, the opening duration of needle valve, the design dimension of nozzle, and so on. As the results of experiments, these factors affecting on spray characteristics were suggested as followings; 1) The optimum spraying pressure of gas was $0.015{\sim}0.02\;kPa$, and the appropriate spraying pressure of liquid paint was 0.01kPa, In these situations, the setting up pressures must be compensated as much as the losing amount of pressure because a decompression occurred when operating valves. 2) The duration of opening the needle valve must be sustained for $1{\sim}2$ seconds to inject gas after spraying the liquid paint. This operating of the needle valve was necessary to avoid the affect on the changing of liquid column length, and to prevent the droplet deposit at the initial time of spraying. 3) The spray tip penetration was gained form the experimental equation, and the effective spraying angle was $85^{\circ}{\pm}5^{\circ}$ just at he appropriate spraying pressure of gas. The distribution of the area sprayed had the variation in $350{\pm}50\;mm$ because of the spraying pressure of gas, the its distance from the spray tip, and the lift of the needle valve.

To analyze the mixture formation process of evaporating diesel spray is important for emissions reduction in actual engines. Then the effects of change in density of ambient gas on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated in this study. The ambient gas density was changed from ${\rho}_a=5.0kg/m^3$ to ${\rho}_a=12.3kg/m^3$ with CVC(Constant Volume Chamber). Also, simulation study by modified KIVA-II code was conducted and compared with experimental results. The ambient temperature and injection pressure are kept as 700K and 72MPa, respectively. The images of liquid and vapor phase in the evaporating free spray were simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As experimental results, with increasing ambient gas density, the tip penetration of the evaporating free spray decreases due to the increase in the drag force from ambient gas. The spatial structure of a diesel spray can be verified as 2-regions consisted of liquid with momentum decrease and vapor with large-scale vortex. The calculated results obtained by modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results.

The focus of this study is placed on the behavior characteristics of gasoline spray under condition field of room temperature and pressure. To analyze the behavior and flow characteristics of injected fuel spray is important in speculation of mixture formation process. Also the exhausted emissions from actual engines can be controlled by the analyzed results. The ${\varphi}$(degree of freedom) and K(energy ratio of particle motion) are selected as the simulation parameter. The factors affect characteristics of spray structure, and the factors are included in the sub-program of the KIVA-II code. In this study, the simulation study by modified KIVA-II code was conducted and the calculated results obtained by the modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results. As a result, applying the improved TAB model with ${\varphi}$=8 and K=2 to simulation analysis of the KIVA-II code is sufficiently useful for analyzing the macro characteristics in spray structure, such as the spray tip penetration of injected fuel spray.
This paper present the diesel fuel spray evolution and atomization performance in a multi-hole nozzle in terms of injection rate, spray evolutions, and mean diameter and velocity of droplets in a compression ignition engine. In order to study the effect of split injection on the diesel fuel spray and atomization characteristic in a multi-hole nozzle, the test nozzle that has two-row small orifice with 0.2 mm interval was used. The time based fuel injection rate characteristics was analyzed from the pressure variation generated in a measuring tube. The spray characteristics of a multi-hole nozzle were visualized and measured by spray visualization system and phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. It was revealed that the total injected fuel quantities of split injection are smaller than those of single injection condition. In case of injection rate characteristics, the split injection is a little lower than single injection and the peak value of second injection rate is lower than single injection. The spray velocity of split injection is also lower because of short energizing duration and small injection mass. It can not observe the improvement of droplet atomization due to the split injection, however, it enhances the droplet distributions at the early stage of fuel injection.

The capability of high pressure injection with small fuel quantify at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature in common rail fuel injection system, which is used in small and light-duty Diesel engine. The key parameter for the better atomized fuel sprays and multiple injections of this common rail fuel injection control, that can be freely selected irrespective of the engine speed and load is the mechanism controlling the needle energizing and movement in high pressure Diesel injector. In the electro-hydraulic injector, the injection nozzle is being opened and closed by movement of the injector's needle which is balanced by pressure between the nozzle seat and the needle control chamber. This study describes the macroscopic spray structure characteristics of the common rail Diesel injectors with different electric driving method i.e. the solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type. The macroscopic spray characteristics such as spray tip speed. spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated by the high speed spray, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for the high speed temporal photography in a constant volume chamber pressurized by nitrogen gas. As the results, the prototype piezo-driven injector system was designed and fabricated for the first time in domestic case and the effect of injector's needle response driven by different drive type was compared between the solenoid and piezo-driven injector It was found therefore. that the piezo-driven injector showed faster needle response and had better needle control capability by altering the electric input value than the solenoid-driven injector.
Performance of DI diesel engine with high-pressure fuel injection equipment is directly related to its emission characteristics and fuel consumption. So, the electro-hydraulic injector for the common-rail injection system should be designed to meet the precise high fuel delivery control capability. Currently, most high pressure injector in use has a needle driven by the solenoid coil energy or the piezo actuator controlled by charge-discharge of output pulse current. In this study, macroscopic spray approaching method was applied under constant volume chamber to research the performance of three different injectors : solenoid, indirect-acting piezo and direct-acting piezo type for CR direct-injection. LED back illumination for Mie scattering was applied on the liquid spray visible of direct-acting piezo injector, including hydraulic-servo type solenoid and piezo-driven injectors. As main results, we found that a direct-acting piezo injector had better a spray tip penetration than hydraulic-servo injectors in spray visualization.
future exhaust emission limits for diesel-driven passenger cars will force the automotive company to significantly develop of the new technologies of diesel engine respectively of the drive assemblies. As we know, the contributions of soot and nitrogen oxide is the main problems in diesel engine. Recently, as a result, the pilot injection of common-rail fuel injection system recognizes an alternative function to solve an environmental problem. This study describes the effect of the nozzle structure and driven characteristic of injector on pilot injection fur a passenger car common-rail system. The pilot spray structure such as spray tip penetration, spray speed and spray angle were obtained by high speed images, which is measured by the Mie scattering method with optical system fur high-speed temporal photography. Also the CFD analysis was carried out for fuel behavior under high pressure in between needle and nozzle of injector for common-rail system to know the condition of initial injection at experiment test. It was found that solenoid-driven injector with 5-hole was faster than 6-hole injector in spray speed at same conditions and piezo-driven injector showed faster response than solenoid injector.
