The present study investigates the effect of injection angle of water mist on fire suppression characteristics by numerical simulation. In order to validate the temperature field by numerical simulation, the predicted results are compared with experimental data. It shows that the temperature difference between measurements and predictions are within $10^{\circ}C$ Numerical simulations of fire suppression are performed for 4 different injection angle($60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $120^{\circ}$, and $180^{\circ}$). The grobal mean temperature over the fire compartment decrease with increasing of spray angle. The result shows that the heat transfer between droplets and gas phase are enhaced with the increasing of spray angle. Near the fire source, temperature field by the wide spray angle is slightly higher than that of narrow injection angle because of direct cooling of fire source.
Numerical simulation of steady, non-evaporating hollow-cone sprays interacting with concentric annular air jets is performed using the discrete stochastic particle method in KIVA. The spray characteristics such as SMD, mean droplet velocity, liquid volume flux, air/liquid mass ratio, and droplet number density arc obtained and compared with the measurements involving different air flow rates in large and small annuli. Overall satisfactory agreement is achieved between calculation and experiment except for the deviation in the downstream SMD arising from uncertainty in the size distribution function at injection, and inaccuracy in the averaged spray parameters due to the small volumes of axisymmetric 2-D sector meshes close to the axis.

The boiling heat transfer was experimentally investigated for the PF-5052 sprays impacting a square heated test surface in a downward direction. Full cone spray nozzles were employed for the spray cooling experiment, and experiments were made under the test conditions of Q=$3.32{\time}10^{-6}{\sim}\;12.98{\time}10^{-6}m^3/s$, ${\Delta}T_{sub}=5{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. Also, heat transfer measurements were made using the copper block of $10{\time}10mm^2$ test area heated by nine cartridge heater. From the experimental results, correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number based on droplet-flow-rate was developed. The correlation shows good predictions with ${\pm}30$ % error for PF-5052.
The present study investigates the effect of injection angle of water mist on fire suppression characteristics by numerical simulation. In order to validate the temperature field by numerical simulation, the predicted results are compared with experimental data. It shows that the temperature difference between measurements and predictions are within $10^{\circ}C$. Numerical simulations of fire suppression are performed for 4 different injection angle($60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $^120{\circ}$, and $180^{\circ}$). The global mean temperature over the fire compartment decrease with increasing of spray angle. The result shows that the heat transfer between droplets and gas phase are enhanced with the increasing of spray angle. Near the fire source, temperature field by the wide spray angle is slightly higher than that of narrow injection angle because of direct cooling of fire source.
This paper describes the atomization characteristics, as well as the velocity and size distribution, of DME spray based on common-rail injection system. To analyze the possibility of using DME fuel as an alternative fuel of diesel, spray atomization characteristics were investigated. For this investigation, two-dimensional phase Doppler analyzer system was used to obtain droplet size and velocity distribution simultaneously. Velocity and droplet size measurements were performed at various injection pressures. Results showed that increasing pressure from 25MPa to 50MPa leads to higher spray droplet velocities and smaller droplet diameter but injection pressure above 40MPa, no signifiant reduction was observed. With the droplet velocity and SMD comparison between diesel and DME fuel, it can be observed that DME has smaller SMD and droplet velocity due to its low surface tension.

The intermitternt and transient fuel spray have been investigated from the simultaneous measurement of droplet sizes and velocities by using Phase/Doppler Particle Analyzer(PDPA). Measurement have been done on the spray axis and at the edge of the spray near nozzle at various gas-to-liquid density ratios(.rho./sub g//.rho./sub l/) that ranges from those found in free atmospheric jets to conditions typical of diesel engines. Probability density distributions of the droplet size and velocity were obtained from raw data and mathematical probability density functions which can fit the experimental distribations were extracted using the principle of maximum likelihood. In the near nozzle region on the spray axis, droplet sizes ranged from the lower limit of the measurement system to the order of nozzle diameter for all (.rho./sub g/ /.rho./sub l/) and droplet sizes tended to be small on the spray edge. At the edge of spray, average droplet velocity peaked during needle opening and needle closing. The rms intensity is greatly incresed as the radial distance from the nozzle is increased. The probability density function which can best fit the physical breakage process such as breakup of fuel drops is exponecially decreasing log-hypebolic function with 4 parameters.
The current trend in automotive finishing industry is to use more electrostatic rotating bell (ESRB) need space to their higher transfer efficiency. The flow physics related with the transfer efficiency is strongly influenced by operating parameters. In order to improve their high transfer efficiency without compromising the coating quality, a better understanding is necessary to the ESRB application of metallic basecoat painting for the automobile exterior. This paper presents the results from experimental investigation of the ESRB spray to apply water-borne painting. The visualization, the droplet size, and velocity measurements of the spray flow were conducted under the operating conditions such as liquid flow rate, shaping airflow rate, bell rotational speed, and electrostatic voltage setting. The optical techniques used in here were a microscopic and light sheet visualization by a copper vapor laser, and a phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. Water was used as paint surrogate for simplicity. The results show that the bell rotating speed is the most important influencing parameter for atomization processes. Liquid flow rate and shaping airflow rate significantly influence the spray structure. Based on the microscopic visualization, the atomization process occurs in ligament breakup mode, which is one of three atomization modes in rotating atomizer. In the spray transport zone, droplets tend to distribute according to size with the larger drops on the outer periphery of spray. In addition, the results of present study provide detailed information on the paint spray structure and transfer processes.

This article reports the experimental and numerical results for free sprays under ultra-high injection pressure conditions to give us better understandings of spray characteristics and also to make clear a limit pressure condition in diesel sprays. The high pressure injection system developed in this work is devised to reach ultra-high pressure conditions in the range from 150 MPa to 355 MPa. The free spray injected from a single nozzle injector is visualized by the Schlieren technique and the high speed camera. In particular, it is found that the shock waves are present and propagated along the edge of spray in the downstream direction. The measured spray penetration length increases gradually with the injection pressure, but its increasing rate is decreased as the injection pressure increases. The Sauter mean diameter is also no longer augmented for the injection pressures higher than 300 MPa. In addition, the threedimensional numerical simulations are conducted for comparing the measurements with the predictions based on two different breakup models. The TAB model results show better agreements with experimental data than the WAVE model under ultra-high injection pressure conductions. Moreover, the simulation results show that the gas-phase pressure increases substantially in the vicinity of the spray tip region. It supports the experimental observation that the shock waves are formed at the front of spray tip and are propagated downstream.
Macroscopic visualization of non-evaporating sprays was experimentally conducted to investigate spray tip penetration and spray angle under low-density conditions, corresponding to an early injection strategy. Furthermore, injectors with varying injection angles (146° and 70°) and numbers of holes (8 and 14) were employed to examine the impact of injector configuration. Compared to the baseline injector, 8H146, which has 8 holes and a 146° injection angle, the spray tip penetration of the 8H70 injector was found to be longer. This can be attributed to higher momentum due to a smooth flow field between the sac volume and the nozzle inlet, which is located closer to the injector tip centerline. The increase in velocity led to intense turbulence generation, resulting in a wider spray angle. Conversely, the spray tip penetration of the 14H70 injector was shorter than that of the 8H70 injector. The competition between increased velocity and decreased nozzle diameter influenced the spray tip penetration for the 14H70 injector; the increase in momentum, previously observed for the 8H70 injector, contributed to an increase in spray tip penetration, but a decrease in nozzle diameter could lead to a reduction in spray tip penetration. The spray angle for the 14H70 injector was similar to that of the 8H146 injector. Moreover, injection rate measurements revealed that the slope for a narrow injection angle (70°) was steeper than that for a wider injection angle during the injection event.
The present article investigates the influence of droplet drag models on predictions of diesel spray behaviors under ultra-high injection pressure conditions. To consider drop deformation and shock disturbance, this study introduces a new hybrid model in predicting drag coefficient from the literature findings. Numerical simulations are first conducted on transient behaviors of single droplet to compare the hybrid model with earlier conventional model. Moreover, using two different models, extensive numerical calculations are made for diesel sprays under ultra-high pressure sprays. It is found that the droplet drag models play an important role in determining the transient behaviors of sprays such as spray tip velocity and penetration lengths. Numerical results indicate that this new hybrid model yields the much better conformity with measurements especially under the ultra-high injection pressure conditions.
