  • The characteristics of the diesel spray have affected certain aspects of engine performance, such as the power, fuel consumption, and emissions. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the effects of various injection parameters. In order to obtain the effect of injection parameters on diesel spray characteristics, the experiment is performed by using a high temperature and pressure chamber. The behaviors of the spray are visualized by using a high speed video camera, spray angle, penetration, and various other things. The results of the experiment are summarized as follows. (1) The correlation of the spray penetration can be expressed as follows. $$0< t $$t_{b} (2) The correlation of the spray angle can be expressed as follows $$T_a=293K\;tan({\theta}/2)=0.59({\rho}a/{\rho}f)^{0.437}$$ $$T_a=473K\;tan({\theta}/2)=0.588({\rho}a/{\rho}f)^{0.404}$$ (3) The measured macro characteristics that include the spray tip penetration and spray angle corresponded with the established correlations.

  • Reactive sprays of two propellant combinations(GOx/kerosene and $GN_2O$/ethanol) were observed and compared with each other as a basic research of visualizing supercritical combustion. A shadowgraph imaging method was used to visualize the reactive sprays, and shadowgraph images were converted to density gradient magnitude images to analyse the structure of reactive sprays. The gas-liquid interface of GOx/kerosene spray showed rougher boundary and steeper density gradient near the injector face than the $N_2O$/ethanol at similar combustion chamber pressure. Spray core length was calculated from averaged density gradient magnitude images and it was revealed that spray core length of GOx/kerosene was shorter than that of $GN_2O$/ethanol, although momentum flux ratio of GOx/kerosene propellant combination was lower.

  • Spray characteristics of single round jet with liquid nitrogen and coaxial spray with liquid nitrogen and gaseous argon were observed. Shadowgraph method was used for spray visualization, and density gradient magnitude image was used to analyse the result. In subcritical condition, irregularity of the jet surface was harder in the coaxial spray. In supercritical condition, diffusion of nitrogen injected from shear coaxial injector was faster than single jet. Jet diameter was induced by averaging images, in supercritical condition, difference of diameter of coaxial jet was rapidly decreased than that of single jet.

  • High velocity, gas-assisted liquid drop trajectories were investigated under well-controlled experimental conditions at elevated gas densities and room temperature. A monodisperse stream of drops which are generated by a vibrating-orifice drop generator were injected into a transverse high velocity gas stream. The gas density and air jet velocity were adjusted independently to keep the Weber numbers constant. The Weber numbers studied were 72, 148, 270, 532. The range of experimental conditions included studied the three drop breakup regimes previously referred as bag, stretching/thinning and catastrophic breakup regimes. High-magnification photography and conventional spray field photographs were taken to study the microscopic breakup mechanisms and the drop trajectories in high velocity gas flow fields, respectively. The parent drop trajectories were affected by the gas density and the gas jet velocities and do not show similarity with respect to the either Weber or the Reynolds number, as expected.

  • The goal of this study is to provide fundamental information on the design of a new diesel injector system. The cylindrical disk spray was made by an impinging disk insited below the exit of air-assist atomizor. The disintegration processes on a twin-fluid atomization by air-assist atomizor were investigated. Liquid jet was disintegrated at the condition that wavelength was equal and longer than the circumference of the liquid jet, .lambda. .geq. .pi.do. However, the wavelength and the diameter of the liquid jet were decreased according to the increasing of air velocity. The relative density distribution of droplets and pattern of spray by impinging disk were investigated with a C-CCD. Optimum design conditions for cylindrical disk spray were also achieved. The pattern of cylindrical spray can classified according to the size of the disk and the distance from the nozzle tip to the disk. When the space of the disk and the nozzle tip was narrow and the diameter of the disk was larger than that of the air orifice of the nozzle exit, the good distribution of spray could be achieved. When the air flowrate was constant, the spray width was decreased according to the increasing of the liquid flowrate. When the liquid flowrate was constant, the spray width was decreased according to the increasing of the air flowrate.

  • The low-emission and high-performance diesel combustion is an important issue in the combustion research community, In order to understand the detailed diesel flame involving the complex physical processes, it is quite desirable to diesel spray dynamics, auto-ignition and spray flame propagation. Dynamics of fuel spray is a crucial element for air-fuel mixture formation, flame stabilization and pollutant formation, In the present study, the diesel RCM (Rapid Compression Machine) and the Electric Control injection system have been designed and developed to investigate the effects of injection pressure, injection timing, and intake air temperature on spray dynamics and diesel combustion processes, In terms of the macroscopic spray combustion characteristics, it is observed that the fuel jet atomization and the droplet breakup processes become much faster by increasing the injection pressure and the spray angle, With increasing the cylinder pressure, there is a tendency that the of spray pattern in the downstream region tends to be spherical due to the increase of air density and the corresponding drag force, Effects of intake temperature and injection pressure on auto-ignition is experimently analysed and discussed in detail.

  • The prediction of diesel spray penetration has been the subject of several works and intensive investigations are still underway by many researchers. It is required to summarize the correlations developed before 1990 days and to introduce the correlations reported recently in the literature. The existing zero-dimensional models for the prediction of diesel fuel spray penetration can be classified as theoretical and empirical correlations. Of various correlations, the models considered in this paper were selected as based on the evaluation results of previous reviews and the recently published works in the literature. The existing theoretical correlations can be classified into seven categories and the existing empirical ones as two categories in this review. According to the review of existing models, the dominating factors for the prediction of spray tip penetration are the spray angle, discharge coefficient, pressure drop across nozzle, ambient density and orifice diameter and time after the start of injection. Especially, the definition for the measurement of spray angle is different with researchers. It is required to evaluate the existing spray tip penetration models for the very high injection pressure and other fuel sprays such as DME. It is also required to evaluate the correlations for the prediction of diesel spray penetration with the connection of liquid-phase penetration.

  • Fuel spray in a gasoline engine is a significant factor for the decision of engine power, pollutant emission and the design of intake manifold system. Three kinds of fuel which has other physical properties are chosen in this study, and it is observed using an image processing method that the mechanism and structure of free fuel spray with a throttle type gasoline injector, and the detailed characteristics of droplet size and velocity distributions are obtained by macro and micro-scopic measuring method respectively. It is verified that the initial breakup behaviors are depended on We like the result of Reitz's study, and also observed that the spray of octane and solvent with Re of 210~330 and 270~330 respectively are better than ethanol which has relatively high density and viscosity.

  • The object of this work is to analyze the macroscopic spray performance and atomization characteristics between diesel and biodiesel fuels. In this study, the effects of mixture ratios of biodiesel fuel on the spray tip penetration, fuel injection rate, spray cone angle, and the atomization characteristics such as droplet size, droplets distribution, and spray arrival time according to the axial distance were investigated at various injection parameters. It is revealed that the injection rate is more affected by injection pressure than mixture ratio. And, the spray development process is closely matched between diesel and biodiesel fuels. However, the droplet atomization characteristics of biodiesel shows deteriorated results as the mixture ratio of biodiesel increased because of the high viscosity and density.
