Front-side members are structures with the greatest energy absorbing capability in a front-end collision of vehicles. This paper was performed to analyze initial collapse characteristics of spot welded hat and double hat-shaped section members, which are basic shape of side members, on the shift of flange weld pitches. The impact collapse tests were carried out by using home-made vertical air compression impact testing machine, and impact velocity of hat-shaped section members is 4.17m/sec and that of double hat-shaped section members is 6.54m/sec. In impact collapse tests, the collapsed length of hat-shaped section members was about 45mm and that of double hat-shaped section members was about 50mm. In consideration of these condition, axial static collapse tests(0.00017m/sec) of hat and double hat-shaped section members were carried out by using UTM which was limited displacement, about 50mm. As the experimental results, to obtain the best initial collapse characteristics, it is important that stiffness of vehicle members increases as section shapes change and the progressively folding mode induces by flange welding pitch.
Spot welding is a very important and useful technology in fabrication of thin sheet structures such as the parts in an automobile. However, because the fatigue strength of the spot welding point is considerably lower than that of the base metal due to stress concentration at the nugget edge, the nugget size must be estimated to evaluate a reasonable fatigue strength at a spot welded lap joint. So far, many investigators have experimentally studied the estimation of fatigue strengths of various spot weldments by using a destructive method. However, these destructive methods poses problems so testing of weldments by these methods are difficult. Furthermore, these methods cannot be applied to a real product, and are time and cost consuming, as well. Therefore, there has been a strong, continual demand for the development of a nondestructive method for estimating nugget size. In this study, the effective nugget size in spot weldments have been analyzed by using thermoelastic stress analysis adopting infrared thermography. Using the results of the temperature distribution obtained by analysis of the infared stress due to adiabatic heat expansion under sinusoidal wave stresses, the effective nugget size in spot welded specimens were estimated. To examine the evaluated effective nugget size in spot weldments, it was compared with the results of microstructure observation from a 5% Nital etching test.
At present, fatigue design of welded structures is primarily based on nominal stress or hot spot stress approach with a series of classified weld S-N curves. However, these methods are known to possess drawbacks, such as difficulty associated with defining proper nominal stress and the finite element sue sensitivity etc. Recently, a mesh-size insensitive structural stress definition is proposed by Battelle that gives a stress state at weld toe with relatively large mesh size. The structural stress definition is based on the elementary structural mechanics theory and provides an effective measure of a stress state in front of weld toe. As an experimental validation of the structural stress method in obtaining the fatigue strength of weldments, a series of experiment is carried out for various sizes of weldments. Based on the result from this study, it is expected to develop a more precise fatigue strength evaluation technique and to save time period required in the fatigue design of ship and offshore structures.

Various type of welded joints of the ship structure have been examined numerically and experimentally under bending and tensional cyclic constant-amplitude loading. Cyclic loading on structures can produce failures not readily predicted by conventional static analysis. The aim of a benchmark study is achieved with a generalization of the reference stress concept. Also different methods and procedures exist for the computation of the welded structure hot-spot stress a welded joints. These are either based on the extrapolation of stresses at certain reference points on the plate surface (or edge) close to the weld toe-as known from experimental investigations- or on the linearization of stresses in the through-thickness direction. In the present paper, the different methods are reviewed and applied to four different details in order to compare the methods with each other and to illustrate the differences.

Front-side members of automobile, such as the hat shaped section members, are structures with the greatest energy absorbing capability in a front-end collision of vehicle. This paper was performed to analyze energy absorption characteristics of the hat shaped section members, which are basic shape of side member. The hat shaped section members consisted of the spot welded side member which was utilized to an actual vehicle and CFRP side member for lightweight of vehicle structural member. The members were tested under static axial loading by universal testing machine. Currently, stacking condition related to the collapse characteristics of composite materials is being considered as an issue fer the structural efficiency and safety of automobiles, aerospace vehicles, trains, ships even elevators during collision. So, energy absorption characteristics were analyzed according to stacking condition and shape of section and compared the results of spot welded side member with those of CFRP side member.
Fatigue tests and numerical analysis were carried out to evaluate the fatigue performance at the U-rib to deck welded joint in steel box girder. Twenty specimens were tested corresponding to different penetration rates (80 and 100%) under fatigue bending load, and the fatigue strength was investigated based on hot spot stress (HSS) method. The detailed stress distribution at U-rib to deck welded joint was analyzed by the finite element method, as well as the stress intensity factor of weld root. The test results show that the specimens with fully penetration rate have longer crack propagation life due to the welding geometry, resulting in higher fatigue failure strength. The classification of FAT-90 is reasonable for evaluating fatigue strength by HSS method. The penetration rate has effect on crack propagation angle near the surface, and the 1-mm stress below weld toe and root approves to be more suitable for fatigue stress assessment, because of its high sensitivity to weld geometry than HSS.

Under water wet welding is an economically alternative for the repair of offshore structures. In this paper investigations on the fatigue strength of a wet welded pipe structural member have been reported. For the connection a special sleeve patch design has been developed. The joint was fatigue tested. The evaluation of the test was carried out by means of the hot-spot approach with regard to several extrapolation rules of the hot-spot stress. Obtained results have been compared to actual classfication rules and recommendations.

Front-end side members of vehicles are structures with the greatest energy absorbing capability in a front-end collision of vehicles. This paper was undertaken to analyze the energy absorption characteristics of spot welded hat and double hat-shaped section members under the axial collapse. The experiments were performed with respect to the various collapse velocities. It was expected that para-closed sections would show collapse characteristics which be quite different from those of perfectly closed sections. The collapse velocities were selected as follows: the velocities in the hat-shaped section members were 0.00017m/sec, 0.017m/sec, 4.7m/sec, 6.5m/sec, 6.8m/sec, 7.2m/sec, and 7.3m/sec those in the double hat-shaped section members were 0.00017m/sec, 0.017m/sec, 6.5m/sec, 6.8m/sec, 7.2m/sec 7.3m/sec, and 7.9m/sec. In the program system presented in this study, an explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA3D, is adopted for simulating complicated collapse behavior of the hat and double hat-shaped section members under the same condition of the collapse test. The validity of simulation was confirmed by the comparison between the simulation result and the collapse experiment.

A numerical procedure is proposed as a mesh-size insensitive structural stress definition that gives a stress state at a weld toe with relatively large mesh size. The structural stress values obtained using different finite element types, i.e. shell element and solid element, are examined for typical weld structures. The calculation procedures are performed using the balanced nodal forces and moments obtained from finite element solutions. A consistent formulation based on work equivalent argument has been implemented to transform the balanced nodal forces and moments from shell to line force and line moments at each nodal position. The mesh-insensitivity, the effect of distance $\delta$(where the stress is calculated) and the potential limitations of the structural stress method are examined for various types of weldments. Based on the results from this study, it is expected to develop a more precise stress estimation technique for fatigue strength assessment of welded structures.
While it is known that the weld toe grinding method may give 3.4 times of fatigue strength improvement, this improvement may significantly vary according to weld bead shapes and loading modes. Although tremendous interest have been given in improving fatigue strength improvement for ship structures, quantitative results are yet in need. In this context, a series of fatigue tests is carried out for a type of test specimen that are typically found in ship structures. Weld burr grinding is carried out using a electric grinder in order to remove surface defects and improve the weld bead profile. The test results are compared with the same type of test specimen without applying the fatigue improvement technique in order to obtain a quantitative measure of the fatigue strength improvement. On the other hand, both hot spot stress and structural stress methods are employed to compare the effectiveness of the two methods in evaluating the fatigue strength improvement of welded structures.
