  • To develope new natural substances for whitening agent, Baeckji(Angelica dahuria;BK), Seasin(Asarum sieboldii;SS). Baecjgangjam(Bombycis corpus;BGJ) and Mynkanbang(MKB) were selected and extracted by hot water and 70% EtOH, respectively. Hydrothermal and ethanolic extracts of BK, SS, BGJ and MKB were evaluated for anti-oxidative effect, tyrosinase activity, melanogenesis of B16 melanoma cells and changes in level of tyrosinase expression by using Western blotting. All hydrothermal and ethanolic extracts showed scavenging activities of free radicals against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) but no inhibitory effect on tyrosinase activity. Ethanolic extracts of BK, SS, and BGJ and especially highly, those of MKB inhibited production of melanin in B16 melanoma cells and were able to reduce the level of tyrosinase expression in B16 melanoma cells. These results suggest that ethanolic extracts of BK, SS, BGJ and MKB can be an effective whitening agent from natural plant.

  • The purpose of this article is to introduce the Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK) physical education curriculum. SPARK is a model for health-related, research-based and evidence-based physical education programs in the United States. The outcome of school physical education can relate to public health, but there exists few evidence-based physical education programs reporting health-related variables. School physical education can provide more opportunities for children and adolescents to be physically active and to learn more about healthy lifestyles. However, physical education programs have been cut and eliminated due to lack of funding in the U.S. as in South Korea. Although facing these problems, SPARK programs have been implemented in over 50% of schools, after school programs and coordinated school health programs in the U.S. This article reviewed: (a) background information of the SPARK program, (b) examples of effective interventions, and (c) methods of dissemination to schools nationally in the U.S. The methods showed in SPARK may use as a model for researching, developing and implementing new physical education(PE) program and after school programs in Korea.

  • One of the largest and fastest growing segments of the tourism industry, sport tourism refers to travel to play sports, watch sports, or to visit a sport attraction including both competitive and non-competitive activities. In this respect, cycling can be considered as not only a form of physical exercise but also a form of tourism in which cycling is a usual tourism-related activity, heading to a particular destination. The purpose of this study is to examine how demographical differences of cycle tourists are related to the quality of their life. An online survey was conducted and data was analyzed using frequency, reliability, and one - way ANOVA using SPSS 22.0. First, we found that there was no significant difference on the quality of physical life based on demographical characteristics. Second, the analysis of the relationship between demographical characteristics and the quality of mental life showed that income level affects their quality of mental life. Third, the analysis of the relationship between socio demographic characteristics and the quality of social life showed that marital status affects the quality of social life. Fourth, no statistically significant difference was found between the demographical characteristics and the quality of environmental life. Further implications were discussed.

  • The prevalence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is continuously increased due to sports activities and traffic accident. Simultaneously ACL reconstruction operations are on the increase. Several kinds of autografts and allografts are used in ACL reconstruction. Although ACL reconstruction using an autogenous bone-patellar tendon-bone graft is the good standard, it might have potential morbidity, anterior knee pain and minimal extension loss. To minimize the complications and disadvantages on each graft and to select appropriate graft for each patient, it is necessary to understand the unique characteristics of each graft for biomechanical aspect, morbidity and disadvantage. Selecting the appropriate graft depends on numerous factors including surgeon's preference and experience, patient's activity level and age, extent of ligament injury, tissue availability, and patient's selection for graft .

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of the global rating of knee function as a measure of participation restrictions experienced during activities of daily living and sports by patients with a history of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Forty-three subjects (33 males, 10 females, age=20.3 ± 1.3 years), at a mean of 31.2 ± 14.4 months following ACLR, participated in this study. During testing, subjects were first asked to provide a global rating of function by assessing their level of knee function on a 0 to 100 scale, with 0 points representing complete loss of function due to their knee injury and 100 points representing their level of function prior to their knee injury. After providing a global rating of function, subjects completed the Knee Outcome Survey (KOS) Activities of Daily Living Scale (ADLS) and Sports Activity Scale (SAS), which served as the measure of participation restrictions in this study. Results: Pearson product correlations revealed moderate relationships between the global rating of function and the ADLS (r=0.66, p<0.0001) and SAS (r=0.69, p<0.0001). Conclusions: The global rating of knee function provides a valid measure of participation restrictions experienced during activities of daily living and sports by patients with a history of ACLR.
