Fuel injection system is very important in diesel combustion. Recently electronic control of fuel injection system and common rail systems are introduced to reduce the emission and to increase the energy efficiency from diesel engine by control of the injection timing and duration. In this study, evaluation possibility of the system for electronic control by spool valve, one of the accumulator type injection systems with spool valve using solenoid was composed and the operating characteristics were investigated to evaluate the effects of spring coefficient, initial spring force, solenoid driving time, fuel supply pressure on the injection timing and duration. We could confirm the capability that diesel injection was electronically controlled by spool valve.
The spool displacement of directional control valve can be considered as the standard signal to measure the bandwidth frequency of a directional control valve. When the spool displacement is not available, the metering-orifice system is implemented in this research as an alternative way of measuring the 90 degrees phase bandwidth frequency of the hydraulic directional control valve. The inertia effect on the transmission line oil induces the phase lead of the valve load pressure when compared with the phase of spool displacement. The capacitance effect of the oil induces the phase lag of the valve load pressure. The phase of the load pressure can be adjusted to be the same as that of the spool displacement by controlling the opening area of the metering orifice. A series of experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the metering orifice. The 90 degrees phase bandwidth frequency measured from the valve load pressure was significantly deviated in some cases from the frequency of the spool displacement. The metering orifice was hard to be applied to measure the -90 degrees phase bandwidth frequency of the high precision.
According to operating conditions of each engine, a PCV valve has various flow rates and pressure characteristic. In a developed country, it has been developing by a computational design simulation. But, Korean companies have no ability of technical design for a PCV valve. So, they depend on their experiments and copy the designs of foreign companies when they need to design new PCV valves. These problems cause increase of error rate and take much time. Hence, optimal design for a PCV valve is needed to secure for continuous competition against foreign automobile companies. In this study, we used 4th order Runge-Kutta method for the prediction of spool movements and applied Bernoulli's equation for the determination of flow area. A spool geometry and spool displacement were predicted to be satisfied in comparison with their experiment.

Compared to other types of power, hydraulic energy is the most commonly used for heavy vehicles and ships because it has fewer location and space constraints, and its controllability can be maintained even under adverse conditions. Operators have controlled a main control valve of ship winches by pushing or pulling the lever, which is directly connected to the spool. However, because of the spatial arrangement, the importance of remote control valves has emerged. In this paper, experiments of the hysteresis characteristics were performed by analyzing the remote-control valve using a valve tester and RA2300. The validity was verified by comparing with the analytical model using SimulationX as the hydraulic analysis program. This study examined the effects of the spool's notch (Non, End-mill, and Spherical) and the effects of stiffness and pre-load of the spool spring on Spool stroke, open area, and hysteresis characteristics. It is considered possible to reduce the cost and the, trial and error process in designing remote-control valves in the future.
The flow signal or spool position signal is used to determine the dynamic characteristics of directional control valves. Alternatively, the signal of spool position or flow can be replaced with the velocity of a low friction, low inertia actuator. In this study, the frequency response of the servo valve equipped with a spool position transducer is measured with a metering cylinder. The input signal, spool displacement, load pressure, and velocity of the metering cylinder are measured, and the theoretical results from the transfer function analysis are verified. The superposition rule for magnitude ratio and phase angle was found to be always applicable among any signal type, and it was found that the load pressure signal is not appropriate for use as the signal for measuring the frequency response of a servo valve. It was confirmed that the frequency response of a servo valve using metering cylinder was similar to the results from a spool displacement signal. The metering cylinder used for measuring the frequency response of a servo valve should be designed to have sufficiently greater bandwidth frequency than the bandwidth frequency of the servo valve.
A PCV valve is a part to control the flow rate of Blowby gas in a PCV system. A PCV system re-burns Blowby gas with fuel in a combustion chamber. Some gas enters to a crankcase room through the gap between piston ring and engine cylinder wall. This gas si called 'Blowby gas'. This gas causes many problems. In environmental view, Blowby gas includes about $25\~35\%$ hydrocarbon{HC) of total generated HC in an automobile. Hydrocarbon is a very harmful pollutant element in our life. In mechanical view, Blowby gas has some reaction with lubricant oil of crankcase room. Then, this causes lubricant oil contamination, crankcase corrosion and a decrease fo engine efficiency. Consequently, Blowby gas must be eliminated from a crankcase room. In this study, we simulated internal flow characteristics in a PCV valve according to spool dynamic behavior using local remeshing method And, we programmed our sub routine to simulate a spool dynamic motion. As results, spool dynamic behavior is periodically oscillated by the relationship between fluid force and elastic force of spring. And its magnitude is linearly increased by the differential pressure between inlet and outlet. Also, as spool is largely moved, flow area is suddenly decreased at orifice. For this reason, flow velocity is rapidly decreased by viscous effect.
Recently, as environmental regulations for earth-moving equipment have been tightening, advanced systems such as electronic control, have been introduced for energy savings. An IMV (Independent Metering Valve) consisting of four 2-way valves, is an electro-hydraulic control systems that provides more flexible controllability, and potential for energy savings in excavators, when compared to the conventional 4-way spool valve system. To fully maximize use of an IMV, the bi-directional flow control valve that can regulate a large amount of flow in both directions, should be adopted. The hydraulic circuit of an IMV applied to an excavator from an overseas construction equipment company, reveals the flow control valve with the compound of proportional solenoid valve for first stage, and 2-way spool valve for the second stage. Moreover, the two spools are interconnected by a feedback spring, presumed to compensate for flow force acting on the second stage spool. This paper addresses the static analysis of flow control valve in an IMV to investigate the improvement of robustness, against flow force by the feedback spring. From the steady-state analysis of flow control valve model, it can be concluded that the feedback spring facilitates maintaining linearity of spool displacement for control input, and relatively constant flow for load disturbance.

Recently, a semi-active shock absorber has been taking interest because of its low cost and simple structure than the active one. CFD analysis has been conducted to investigate the continuous and variable damping characteristics of the semi-active shock absorber. Also, the flow resistance characteristics of a spool valve has been examined to identify individual parameters(namely, exponent and discharge coefficient) of pressure-flow rate relation needed for the accurate valve modeling. The flow field in the damping valve was simulated using the commercial code, CFX-5.3. The numerical results showed reasonable agreement with the experimental outputs. The pressure distribution with the variation of spool opening length and volume flow rate were discussed in detail. And the continuous and variable damping performance was found clearly. The individual parameters of spool valve were obtained as a function of orifice area. The exponent and discharge coefficient were fitted in with the first and the third polynomial respectively.

In this paper, a numerical analysis is carried out to show the effect of friction farce on the dynamic characteristics of a flow divider valve. The continuity equations and the equation of motion fur spool are numerically solved. The viscous friction force acting on the spool is considered analyzing the Reynolds equation which governs the viscous flow in the clearance gap between the spool and sleeve. Dynamic characteristics are highly affected by the viscous friction farce whose magnitude is relatively small compare with other fluid forces. Therefore present theoretical formulation and numerical scheme can be used generally in designing and performance evaluation of all the hydraulic spool valve.
EPPR (Electro-hydraulic Proportional Pressure Reducing) valves are pressure control valves. In this study, an independent metering valve (IMV), which is a combination of a spool valve opened and closed with the help of an EPPR valve, was discussed. The overall performance of the valve (IMV) was obtained by the respective modeling and simulation of the system. The valve investigated in this study is to be used for independent metering of hydraulic excavator actuator e.g. boom, arm, bucket etc. To design the model, continuity equations and force balance equations were used. The set of differential equations were then simulated in Simulink using ODE45 option in the configuration toolbox. The valve has to be able to control the flow rate going in and out of the cylinder separately, which is why the particular configuration was needed and selected.
