In this study, a modified reverse flow type, one of the triple effect absorption cycles, is studied for performance improvement. The cycle simulation is carried out by using EES(Engineering Equation Solver) program for the working fluid of $H_2O/LiBr$ solution. The split-ratios of solution flow rate, UA of each component, pumping mass flow rate of solution are considered as key parameters. The results show that the optimal SRH (split ratio of high side) and SRL (split ratio of low side) values are 0.596 and 0.521, respectively. Under these conditions, the COP is maximized to 2.1. The optimal pumping mass flow rate is selected as 3 kg/s and the corresponding UAEV A is 121 kW/K in the present system. The present simulation results are compared to the other literature results from Kaita's (2002) and Cho's (1998) triple effect absorption systems. The present system has a lower solution temperature and a higher COP than the Kaita's modified reverse flow, and it also gives a higher COP than the Cho's parallel flow by adjusting split ratios.
The flow forming process consists of a split process, a divide process, and a forming process. The split process is a forming process in which rollers radially permeate a simple disc-shaped forging material and split it in both directions to form a top-bottom bidirectional cup. It is advantageous for post-processing to deepen the forming depth in the split process but this characteristic causes the failure near the edge of the mandrel during the actual process. The split process was analyzed using Rigid Plastic FEM, and the stress analysis of the mandrel was conducted to find the cause of the failure. It was found that the failure occurred due to fatigue accumulation damage caused by repeated residual stress.
The scaled water-cooled Reactor Cavity Cooling System (RCCS) experimental facility reproduces a passive safety feature to be implemented in Generation IV nuclear reactors. It keeps the reactor cavity and other internal structures in operational conditions by removing heat leakage from the reactor pressure vessel. The present work uses Flownex one-dimensional thermal-fluid code to model the facility and predict the experimental thermal-hydraulic behavior. Two representative steady-state cases defined by the bulk volumetric flow rate are simulated (Re = 2,409 and Re = 11,524). Results of the cavity outlet temperature, risers' temperature profile, and volumetric flow split in the cooling panel are also compared with the experimental data and RELAP system code simulations. The comparisons are in reasonable agreement with the previous studies, demonstrating the ability of Flownex to simulate the RCCS behavior. It is found that the low Re case of 2,409, temperature and flow split are evenly distributed across the risers. On the contrary, there's an asymmetry trend in both temperature and flow split distributions for the high Re case of 11,524.

As a turbulence-enhancing device, a mixing vane, which is installed at a spacer grid of the fuel assembly, plays an important role in improving convective heat transfer by generating either swirl flow in the subchannels or cross flow between the fuel rod gaps. Therefore, both the geometric configuration and the arrangement pattern of a mixing vane are important factors in determining the performance of a mixing vane. In this study, in order to examine the flow-distribution features inside a $5{\times}5$ fuel assembly with split-type mixing vanes, which was used in the benchmark calculation of the OECD/NEA, we conduct simulations using the commercial computational fluid dynamics software, ANSYS CFX R.14. We compare the predicted results with measured data obtained from the MATiS-H (Measurement and Analysis of Turbulent Mixing in Subchannels-Horizontal) test facility. In addition, we discuss the effect of the split-type mixing vanes on the flow pattern inside the fuel assembly.
The subject this paper is the signal control strategy under oversaturated conditions. The nature of traffic control for oversaturation is essentially different from the standard control modes. While under non-saturated situation traffic control is needed for the sake of safety and efficiency, the throughput is essential under oversaturated conditions. Therefore berth objective and strategies differ. For an oversaturated stream the cycle time and the signal offset are thought to be of rather secondary importance. For this case the green split may well be the most important control variable to serve the excessive demand. Up to now, however, most efforts have concentrated on the strategy with the concept which lies just on the extension of Webster's. "Green-split Coordination Strategy for Over-Saturated Networks", presents newly contrived three types of strategies named Forward-coordination, Backward-coordination and Network-coordination respectively and describes the algorithms with the evaluations. The forward coordination strategy treats the forward wave of flow between two signals. The aim is to prevent the outbreak of queue due to the accumulation of temporary excess of demand in near-saturation or saturation flow. The backward coordination strategy treats the backward rave of flow between two signals. The goal is to prevent the waste of green time caused by the exit block at the upstream signal. for this purpose a feedback regulation is provided of the upstream green-split so that the inflow-outflow balance is kept zero. The resultant surplus of green time is alloted to other signal stages. Also here the examination is made of the appropriate value of the feedback control parameter. The network coordination strategy is operated to maximize the network throughput in a specific direction applying a bang-bang control at the bottleneck intersection. This is a type of intervenient control for policy reasons. For this strategy the green-split coordinations, particuarly the backward coordination, are essential as the tactical elements. In order to evaluate the preposed strategies those are compared with the latest existing strategy called saturation-degree-ratio control by the simulation experiments in an assumed 4$\times$4 grid network. The results are satisfactory showing a 10-15% reduction in delays and a 15% increase in network capacity.
The mixing vanes attached to the spacer grid of rod bundles are used to improve the heat transfer in heat exchanger devices by controlling the characteristics of the flow structures and turbulence. In this study, velocity patterns induced by two types of mixing vane(split and swirl vane) are measured by the PIV technique to better understand how to effect on the cross and secondary vortex flow patterns in $5{\times}$ rod bundle simulating the fuel assembly of the nuclear reactor. A successful measurement of the lateral velocity patterns was conducted using a specially designed beam sheet generator and experimental loop at KAERI. As the result, we found that for the cross flow between subchannels, the split vane is more effective than the swirl vane, while for the secondary vortex flow in each subchannel, the swirl vane's one is larger and longer than split vane's one.
Numerical Analysis has been done for the supersonic off-design jet flow due to the pressure difference between the jet and the ambient fluid. The difference of pressure generates an oblique shock or an expansion wave at the nozzle exit. The waves reflect repeatedly on the center axis and the sonic surface in the shear layer. The pressure difference is resolved across these reflected waves. In this paper, the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation has been used with the κ-ε turbulence model. The second order TVD scheme with flux limiters, based on the flux vector split with the smooth eigenvalue split, has been used to capture internal shocks and other discontinuities. Numerical calculations have been done to analyze the off-design jet flow due to the pressure difference. The variation of pressure along the flow axis is compared with an experimental result and other numerical result. The characteristics of the interaction between the shock cell and the turbulence mixing layer have been analyzed.
The interest in the mechanical behavior of materials at high strain rates has increased in recent years, and by now it is well known that mechanical properties can be strongly influenced by the speed of applied load. The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) has been widely used to determine mechanical properties of materials at high loading rates. However, to ensure test reliability, measurement error source must be accounted for and eliminated. During experiment, the specimens were located between the incident and the transmit bar. The presence of contact frictions between the test bars and specimen may cause errors. In this work, numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of friction on test results. In SHPB test, the measured stress by the transmitted bar is assumed to be flow stress of the test specimen. Through the numerical experiments, however, it is shown that the measured stress by the transmit bar is axial stress components. When, the contact surface is frictionless, the flow stress and the axial stress of the specimen are about the same. When the contact surface is not frictionless, however, the flow stress and the axial stress are not the same anymore. Therefore, the measured stress by the transmitted bar is not flow stress. The effect of friction on the difference between flow stress and axial stress is investigated.
In recent studies, various types of multi mode electric variable transmissions of hybrid electric vehicles have been proposed. Multi mode electric variable transmission consists of two or more different types of planetary gear hybrid powertrain system(PGHP), which can change its power flow type by means of clutches for improving transmission efficiencies. Generally, the power flows can be classified into three different types such as input split, output split and compound split. In this study, we analyzed power transmission characteristics of the possible six input split systems, and found the suitable system for single or multi mode hybrid powertrain. The input split system used in PRIUS is identified as a best system for single mode, and moreover we identified some suitable systems for dual mode.

This study is concerned with evaluating the effects of acoustic excitation on the development of two stream mixing layer generated by split plate. The ratios of two velocities U1 and U2 either side of the splitter plate were such that $U_1/U_2$=1.0 (uniform flow) or $U_1/U_2$<1.0(shear flow). The mixing layers were disturbed acoustically through the edge of split plate. Quantitative data were obtained with hot-wire anemometry. Flow visualization with smoke-wire was also employed for qualitative study. the results show that the large scale structures of mixing layers are strongly affected by excitation frequency and amplitude in both uniform and shear flows. The maximum streamwise and vertical turbulent intensities of the excited flow fields are apt to be decreased as compared with those of without excitation. The flow characteristics of uniform flow are more influenced by acoustic excitation than those of shear flow.
