  • Skew is inevitably occurred in a scanned document image Thus, character recognition systems are generally very sensitive to a skew angle. In this paper, we propose a robust slant correction algorithm based on dithering and estimating vortical transition. Character strings are segmented by projecting the vertical transition point and the slant corrected image. The segmentation method using the vertical transition point can effectively split the character strings touching vertically each other. Experimental results show that the proposed method has achieved robust slant correction and good performance of character string segmentation.

  • A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed to propose the optimum design of flow mixing vane on the space grid in a PWR fuel assembly. The flow mixing vanes considered in this study for optimum design are swirl-vane and twisted-vane. A single subchannel of one grid span was modeled using flow symmetry to minimize the computational effort. The CFD predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results for the split- vane, which shows the applicability of the CFD method. The mixing effect by swirling flow and crossflow, and the pressure drop were estimated and compared for the various vane angles. The optimum vane angle is proposed to be 40。 and 35。 from the direction of axial flow for the swirl-vane and the twisted-vane, respectively.

  • New computer-aided calibration methods for the hot-wire and split film probes are presented. The proposed modified king's law takes into account instantaneous flow angle as well as the variation of calibration coefficients due to the total velocity magnitude change. It is found that the look-up table method has many advantages with respect to the accuracy on data and reducing run time for calibration over other conventional methods. In order to investigate the local sensitivity of the static calibration, a dynamic calibration procedure is also carried out.

  • In this systematic review on bone reduction procedures for the correction of the prominent mandibular angle, we collected and sorted the methods. The strength and weakness, indication, complication, and final esthetic result of each method were evaluated. After searching and filtering the literatures on the base of inclusion criteria, 9 eligible case series studies were included in this study. There were 3 types of curved ostectomies and 4 types of lateral cortical ostectomies. Surgical procedures for curved ostectomies were divided into 2 types. One was single curved ostectomy and the other was multistaged curved ostectomy. Lateral cortical ostectomies reported were all similar to sagittal split ramus osteotomy. The complications reported in the included studies were scarce, but curved ostectomies may be able to induce many complications. The prominent mandibular angle must be analyzed in the lateral dimension and frontal dimension, and curved ostectomy can reduce the mandibular angle laterally while lateral cortical ostectomy can reduce the bigonial distance frontally. Because curved ostectomies can induce complications and unnaturally large mandibular angle while can not reduce bigonial distance efficiently, the current trend for the angle reduction procedure is lateral cortical ostectomies.

  • A prerequisite for deriving the abundance estimates from acoustic surveys for commercially important fish species is the identification of target strength measurements for selected fish species. In relation to these needs, the goal of this study was to construct a data bank for converting the acoustic measurements of target strength to biological estimates of fish length and to simultaneously obtain the target strength-fish length relationship. Laboratory measurements of target strength on 15 commercially important fish species were carried out at five frequencies of 50, 70, 75, 120 and 200 kHz by single and split beam methods under the controlled conditions of the fresh and the sea water tanks with the 389 samples of dead and live fishes. The target strength pattern on individual fish of each species was measured as a function of tilt angle, ranging from $-45^{\circ}$ (head down aspect) to $+45^{\circ}$ (head up aspect) in $0.2^{\circ}$ intervals, and the averaged target strength was estimated by assuming the tilt angle distribution as N $(-5.0^{\circ},\;15.0^{\circ})$. The TS to fish length relationship for each species was independently derived by a least-squares fitting procedure. Also, a linear regression analysis for all species was performed to reduce the data to a set of empirical equations showing the variation of target strength to a fish length, wavelength and fish species. For four of the frequencies (50, 75, 120 and 200 kHz), an empirical model for fish target strength (TS, dB) averaged over the dorsal sapect of 602 fishes of 10 species and which spans the fish length (L, m) to wavelength (\Lambda,\;m)$ ratio between 5 and 73 was derived: $TS=19.44\;Log(L)+0.56\;Log(\Lambda)-30.9,\;(r^2=0.53)$.

  • Land surface Temperature (LST) is a very useful surface parameter for the wide range of applications, such as agriculture, numerical and climate modelling community. Whereas operational observation of LST is far from the needs of application community in the spatial Itemporal resolution and accuracy. So, we developed split-window type LST retrieval algorithm to estimate the LST from MTSAT-IR data. The coefficients of split-window algorithm were obtained by means of a statistical regression analysis from the radiative transfer simulations using MODTRAN 4 for wide range of atmospheric profiles, satellite zenith angle and lapse rate conditions including the surface inversions. The sensitivity analysis showed that the LST algorithm reproduces the LST with a reasonable quality. However, the LST algorithm overestimates and underestimates for the strong surface inversion and superadiabatic conditions especially for the warm temperature, respectively. And the performance of LST algorithms is superior when satellite zenith angle is small. The accuracy of the retrieved LST has been evaluated with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST data. The validation results showed that the correlation coefficients and RMSE are about 0.83${\sim}$0.98 and 1.38${\sim}$4.06, respectively. And the quality of LST is significantly better during night and winter time than during day and summer. The validation results showed that the LST retrieval algorithm could be used for the operational retrieval of LST from MTSAT-IR and COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) data with some modifications.

  • In this paper, the test and result of flow and combustion for 21AFR lean fuel models are described. The necessity to develop the low emission combustor has been issued from the concern on the increase of green house and the destruction of ozone layer. To evaluate the flow and combustion performance of new designed 21AFR lean modules, the hydraulic tests in stereo lithographic airflows models, the low pressure combustion tests in three injectors model for weak extinction and ignition and the high pressure combustion tests in single sector for NOx, SAE and efficiency are performed. The low pressure tests reveal that the governing parameters in weak extinction and ignition at atmospheric condition are prefilmer length, swirl flow rotation direction, secondary swirl angle and flow split. As a results of combustion test at high pressure, the efficiency and smoke level are satisfied with performance targets, but EINOx of 17.8 is higher than target value of 13.1. The high pressure tests show that the main parameters influenced on NOx are primary swirl angle, swirl flow rotation direction, heatshield exit angle and liner mixing hole location.

  • A numerical model and a controller of Active Front wheel Steer (AFS) system are designed in this study. The AFS model consists of four sub models, and the AFS controller uses sliding mode control and PID control methods. To test this model and controller an Integrated Dynamics Control with Steering (IDCS) system is also designed. The IDCS system integrates an AFS system and an ARS (Active Rear wheel Steering) system. The AFS controller and IDCS controller are compared under several driving and road conditions. An 8 degree of freedom vehicle model is also employed to test the controllers. The results show that the model of AFS system shows good kinematic steering assistance function. Steering ratio varies depends on vehicle velocity between 12 and 24. Kinematic stabilization function also shows good performance because yaw rate of AFS vehicle tracks the reference yaw rate. IDCS shows improved responses compared to AFS because body side slip angle is also reduced. This result also proves that AFS system shows satisfactory result when it is integrated with another chassis system. On a split-m road, two controllers forced the vehicle to proceed straight ahead.
