Translation and Psychometric Testing of the Korean Versions of the Spiritual Perspective Scale and the Self-transcendence Scale in Korean Elders

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to translate the Spiritual Perspective Scale (SPS) and Self-transcendence Scale (STS) into Korean and test the psychometric properties of the instruments with Korean elders. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used to implement the three stages of the study. Stage I consisted of translating and reviewing the scales by six experts. In Stage II, equivalence was tested by comparing the responses between the Korean and English versions among 71 bilingual adults. Stage III established the psychometric properties of the Korean versions SPS-K and STS-K among 154 Korean elders. Results: Cronbach's alpha of the SPS-K and the STS-K .97, and .85 respectively with Korean elders. Factor analysis showed that the SPS-K had one factor; the STS-K had four factors with one factor clearly representing self-transcendence as theorized. Both scales showed good reliability and validity for the translated Korean versions. However, continued study of the construct validity of the STS-K is needed. Conclusion: Study findings indicate that the SPS-K and the STS-K could be useful for nurses and geriatric researchers to assess a broadly defined spirituality, and to conduct research on spirituality and health among Korean elders. Use of these scales within a theory-based study may contribute to further knowledge about the role of spirituality in the health and well-being of Korean people facing health crises.

  • Located in Dornach, Switcherland Eurythmeum Anbau zu Haus Brodbeck (Rudolf Steiner-Halde, Eurythmeum Anbau zu Haus Brodbeck, 1923-1935) is one of the architectural works created by Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) who has studied and established the cognitive and spiritual aspects of a human being, and is often cited as being the founder of anthroposophy. In fact, Eurythmeum Anbau zu Haus Brodbeck is not as well known as Steiner's other works, and it is perceived as less important than his major works of architecture including "Goetheanum", "Modellbau zu Malsch", and "Rudolf Steiner Haus Stuttgart". Nonetheless, this study is meaningful in itself since it is an important piece of architecture to gain an understanding of the characteristics of Steiner's late works, and the architectural characteristics of the Waldorf School where various active educational activities are taking place around the world. Eurythmeum Anbau zu Haus Brodbeck clearly exhibits the characteristics of the architectural space based on Steiner's anthroposophy as well as provides a window into promoting space efficiency by extending an existing building. Moreover, it provides a good learning opportunity to find out about how Steiner's architectural disposition has changed and developed with the use of new materials. With these points as a backdrop, the study aims to develop an understanding of the architectural characteristics of Eurythmeum Anbau zu Haus Brodbeck. Another important objective of this paper is to gain insight into the architectural implications in connection with the influence Eurythmeum Anbau zu Haus Brodbeck has had on Steiner's later works, by comparing his early works of architecture with those of his late works.

퇴계 심학과 정신주의 철학 (Toegye's Simhak and Spiritualism)

  • 퇴계학은 주자학 계열에 속하면서도 오히려 심학적 성격을 강하게 지닌다. 퇴계 심학은 리와 심을 구분하면서도 궁극적으로는 심과 리의 합일[심여리일(心與理一)]을 추구하는 수양론적 의미가 강하고, 양명의 심학은 심즉리(心卽理)로서 본체론적 의미의 심학으로 구분된다. 퇴계 심학이나 양명 심학이나 진리의 객관성보다도 그것이 나의 실존에 와 닿아야 참된 것이라고 보는 점에서 진리의 주체성 실존성을 중시하고, 이론적 탐구보다는 실제적 실천을 강조하는 공통점이 있다. 퇴계는 많은 고전 가운데 특히 "심경부주(心經附註)"를 매우 중시하였다. "심경부주"에 대해 제자들과 주위에서 많은 문제점을 지적하였음에도 불구하고, "심경부주"에 대한 퇴계의 존숭은 결코 변하지 않고 지속되었다. 퇴계가 "심경"을 좋아하고 중요한 텍스트로 여겼던 것은 그의 심학 사상에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. "심학도"를 통해서 보면 도심과 인심, 천리와 인욕 사이의 마음의 갈등 상황에서 "존천리알인욕(存天理?人欲)"을 위한 심성 수양공부의 방법이 심학의 주된 내용을 이루고 있다. 이러한 수양공부를 통해 심학은 공자의 "종심소욕부유구(從心所欲不踰矩)"나 맹자의 '불동심(不動心)'과 같은 성인의 마음 즉 '심여리일(心與理一)'의 경지에 도달하는 것이 주목적인 것이다. 퇴계 심학은 20세기 프랑스 정신주의 철학자 루이 라벨(Louis Lavelle)의 철학과 유사한 공통점이 있다. 즉 존재의 원천으로서의 절대적 존재와의 관계를 중시하고, 물질에 대한 정신의 존재론적 우위, 마음의 눈을 안으로 돌리는 향내적 자각을 강조한다. 퇴계 심학은 단순히 종교적 도덕적 금욕주의로 회귀하자는 것이 아니라, 참된 존재의 욕망을 충족시킴으로써 깊은 차원의 희열을 추구하는 것이다. 심학의 정신주의 철학은 현대인에게 새로운 차원의 즐거움과 삶의 양식을 보여줄 수 있다. 퇴계의 주자학적 심학은 양명의 심학이 지닌 장점을 수용하면서도 그것의 한계에 대해서는 분명하게 인식하고 있었다. 그래서 선학의 폐단에 빠지지 않으면서도 심학이 지닌 생생한 실존적 체험의 생명력을 주자학에 끌어들려 주자학의 새로운 재활성화를 추구하였다고 평가할 수 있다.

동무(東武) 이제마(李濟馬)의 태극심(太極心)에 대한 고찰(考察) (A Study about Great Absolute-Mind from Lee Je-Ma's Thoughts)

  • 1. Objectives The purpose of study is to find Lee Je-Ma's thoughts about Great Absolute-Mind in his writings. 2. Methods the concept of Lee Je-Ma's Great Absolute-Mind versus preexisted Great Absolute-Mind is compared and analysed in this study. 3. Results and Conclusions (1) Lee Je-Ma composed his Great Absolute-Mind based on its concept of the science of divination, Confucianism and medicine. However his Great Absolute-Mind is rooted in preexisted meaning, it was disputed desides the controversy between the science of divination, Confucianism and medicine. For this reason, Lee Je-Ma's Great Absolute-Mind is such an originative concept unable to be explained with a simple substitution this concept for the preexisted one of the science of divination, Confucianism and medicine. (2) Lee Je-Ma's Great Absolute-Mind is the human being itself and it can include the humanity from human being itself. (3) There are not only physical meaning of heart but also abstract metaphysical concept of heart included in Lee Je-Ma's Great Absolute-Mind. (4) The talent for comprehending principles is organically connected with the ability to attain their will. And the talent and ability is devided into Two Modes(兩儀) like Mind & Body(心身), Perception & Action(知行) and Nature & Emotion(性情). (5) The supervision of Lee Je-Ma’s Great Absolute-Mind affects physical part of body as well as spiritual part and is not devided into two but one. (6) The source of the supervision is rooted on Lungs Spleen liver Kidney(肺脾肝腎), Sasang(四象), even though it exists in the Great Absolute-Mind. So Sasang(四象), which is Lungs Spleen Liver Kidney(肺脾肝腎), is organically related to the Great Absolute-Mind in its effect and origin.

  • 인류는 끊임없이 도구를 만들어 사용하였다. 이것은 인류의 역사가 창조적으로 유지되고 발달되어 왔다는 것을 말한다. 인간은 보다 더 나은 삶을 영위하기 위하여 문명적 발전과 더불어 미적 욕구의 충족을 위한 조형성 추구 등 문화적 개발에도 끊임없이 노력해 왔다. 규방용품은 지극히 여성적이고 한국적인 정서를 담고 있으며 한 문화, 예술의 한 장르로서도 평가 되고 있다. 규방공예는 당시의 사회적, 문화적, 종교적 배경을 바탕으로 독자적이고 독특한 조형미를 형성되어 있으며, 여인들의 벗이라고 할 수 있는 침선구는 연인들의 희 노 애 락 속에서 삶의 모습과 정신세계가 문화적 깊이를 갖는 예술적 정서를 나타내고 있다. 여인들의 시대적 삶의 바탕으로 동고동락했던 침선구의 조형적 이미지, 융합적 결합 및 조화를 통한 장신구로 연관하여 재현시킴으로써 보다 구체적이고 현대적인 감각을 표현할 수 있으리라 의도하여 출발 그 가능성을 다각적으로 모색코자 하였다. 이와 같이 여인의 체취와 정신적 염원이 담긴 규방용품 중 침선구 중심으로 그 특성과 조형성, 융합적 조화, 단아함, 섬세함, 미적 아름다움을 재발견하고 전통 문화 예술의 우수성과 미적 가치를 장신구로 재인식 할 수 있는 계기가 되길 기대한다.

중년의 노후 생활준비도 및 요양시설 인식에 대한 연구 (A Study on Middle-Aged People's Preparation for Old Age Life and Their Perception of Long-term Care Facilities)

  • Purpose: The study was to got basic data on the well-being of middle-aged people concerning their preparation for their upcoming old age and their quality of life. Methods: The subjects were 440 people aged between 40 and 59 living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Results; First, Physical Preparation for old age was affected by religion, children, health, monthly income, and economical status, and these factors were shown statistically significant. Emotional preparation and spiritual Preparation were also related to the above-mentioned factors. Secondly, in the subjects' mental picture, a nursing home was a place for the aged without anyone who is going to take care of them and without abilities to care of themselves. Preference for nursing home was based on two factors. i.e., nursing and treatment care. and the cost was about one million won per month. Also they wanted that the government should pay a certain amount for private users. Conclusion: Therefore, people should lead a life of good health-related habits along with economical preparation for their old age.

The Importance and Multifunctions of Korean Paddy Fields

  • The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry announced in 2001 that the overall amount of paddy land set aside for rice will be cut down by 12% by 2005, decreasing from 1.08 million to 953,000 hectares. When evaluating the value of paddy rice systems, the multi-function of paddy systems in the monsoon climate is vital importance. The main functions of paddy rice systems are to conserve biodiversity and maintain sustainability. Some crucial environmental benefits of the paddy rice systems include: flood prevention, recharge of water resources, water purification, soil erosion and landslide prevention, soil purification, landscape preservation and air purification. The paddy rice systems in Korea, which are more diverse than upland crop systems, are known to be composed of 14 orders, 36 families and 134 species. The sustain ability of paddy rice production systems can never be overestimated. Rice is part of the culture and even the heart of spiritual life in the area under the monsoon climate. Therefore paddy rice systems should be preserved with the highest priority being the enhancement of the systems' multi-function. As an outlook to future research, the need of joint and interdisciplinary research projects between economists and natural scientists at inland as well as international levels were emphasized in establishing the development of counter-measure logic through actual proofed analysis.

Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine among Breast Cancer Survivors

  • Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is prevalent among individuals with cancer, especially breast cancer survivors. This study was conducted among 394 breast cancer survivors in selected regions of Peninsular Malaysia to identify the pattern and factors associated with CAM use. About 51% of the respondents reported CAM use as complementary treatment. Vitamins (47.2%), spiritual activities (33.2%) and other dietary supplements (30.7%) were the most commonly used CAM therapies. Common reasons for CAM use were to increase the body's ability to perform daily activities (70.9%), enhance immune function (58.3%) and improve emotional well-being (31.7%). Users obtained CAM information mainly from friends and family members (62.5%), physicians (25.0%) and mass media (13.9%). Ethnicity and years of education were significantly associated with CAM use. Although no adverse effects of CAM were reported, breast cancer survivors should discuss their CAM use with health professionals to prevent potential adverse effects of these therapies.

암 생존력에 대한 개념분석 (A Conceptual Analysis of Cancer Survivorship)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify attributes of the concept of cancer survivorship. Methods: Walker & Avant's concept analysis framework (2005) was used to review the medical & nursing text books, medical and nursing research articles related to cancer survivorship and published from 1985 to 2011. Results: There were nine aspects of the concept of cancer survivorship: A process, liminality, uncertainty, life-changing experience, complexity, unique experience, duality of positive and negative aspects, partnership, and need for support. Antecedents of cancer survivorship were cancer diagnosis and perception as a cancer survivor. Empirical referents of cancer survivorship were survival rate, quality of life, adaptation to the survivorship experience, and health-related hardiness, social support, spirituality, and health behavior. The consequences of cancer survivorship were effects on the physical, psychosocial, spiritual and socio-economic well-being of the patients. Conclusion: This concept analysis of cancer survivorship is expected to contribute to promotion of survivorship care in the clinical field by removing conceptual ambiguity and confirming the true meaning of survivorship care.

우리나라 의료의 생의학적 모델 어떻게 할 것인가? - 생의학적 모델에서 생물정신사회적 모델로 - (What Should We do with Korea's Biomedical Model of Medicine? - From Biomedical to Biopsychosocial Model -)

  • 질병의 생물정신사회적 이해는 건강의 의미 있는 증진을 위해서 매우 중요한다. 건강의 유지와 증진은 신체적, 정신적, 사회적, 그리고 영적인 안녕감을 통하여 이루어진다. 건강은 단순한 상태와 삶의 목적이 아니며, 일상생활에서의 자원으로, 개인적, 사회적뿐만 아니라 신체적 능력의 긍정적 개념이다. 한편 의료 체계에서 생물정신사회적 모델의 이해 역시 매우 중요하다. Engel은 의사들의 교육 및 진료에서 생의학적 접근을 비판하고, 새로운 모델인 생물정신사회적 모델을 주장하였다. Engel은 인간을 특정한 방법으로 자신의 건강을 위해하거나 증진시킬 수 있는 생물학적, 정신적, 사회적 존재로 보았다. 질병의 생물정신사회적 모델의 중요함에도 불구하고, 우리나라의 의료는 질병의 생의학적 모델에만 중점을 두고 있다. 그 결과 한국의 의료가 기계화 되어가고 있고 비인간화 되어가고 있다. 저자는 한국 정신신체의학회 창립 20주년을 맞이함에 따라 우리나라 의료 체계 및 실제적인 임상 진료에서 질병의 생물정신사회적 모델의 중요성을 강조하고자 하였다.
