  • We investigated the magnetic properties of VRu(001) surface by using the all electron full-potenial linearized augmented planewave (FLAPW) energy band method within the GGA. We consider two different configurations, V and Ru surface layers, respectively. The V atoms in surface layer was calculated to have large magnetic moment of $1.71_{{\mu}_B}$ while the Ru surface layer to have nearly nonmagnetic state. The calculated spin-polarized density of states. spin density contour, and charge density were discussed in relation to the magnetic properties of VRu(001) surface.

  • The influence of insertion of an ultra-thin Cu-Phthalocyanine (CuPc) between MgO barrier and ferromagnetic layer in magnetic tunnel juctions (MTJs) was investigated. In order to understand the relation between the electronic and structural properties of Fe${\backslash}$MgO${\backslash}$CuPc, the surface (or interface) analysis was carried out systematically by using spin polarized metastable He de-excited spectroscopy for the CuPc films grown on the Si(001)${\backslash}$5 nm MgO(001)${\backslash}$7 nm Fe(001)${\backslash}$1.6 nm MgO(001) multilayer structure as the thickness of CuPc increases from 0 to 5 nm. In particular, for the 1.6 nm CuPc surface, a rather strong spin asymmetry between up- and down-spin band appears while it becomes weaker or disappears for the CuPc films thinner or thicker than ~1.6 nm. Our results emphasize the importance of the interfacial electronic properties of organic layers in the spin transport of the hybrid MTJs.

  • The time resolved electron spin resonance spectroscopy are used to two measurement methods of chemically induced dynamic electron polarization (CIDEP) and absorption ESR. The spectra of the semiquinone radical anion were successively detected in the laser flash photolysis of anthraquinone in the mixtures of 2-propanol and triethylamine. The semiquinone radical anion was fairly stable and its cw ESR could be observed. The rate constant (T1$^{-1}$) of the spin-depolarization of polarized semiquinone radical anion was 2.6 ${\times}\;1-^5$ sec$^{-1}$ and the decay of the radical anion was the first order with the rate constant (K$_1}$) of 300.0 sec$^{-1}$. The intensity of CIDEP spectra increased with the increasing the microwave power, but the Torrey wiggles appeared following with decay curves.

  • The magnetic properties of Ni nanowires consisting of one to four atoms are investigated by mean of ab initio spin-polarized density functional calculations. Stability of zigzag-square $Ni_4$ nanowire is larger than $Ni_4$ nanowires with square. The magnetic moment of linear $Ni_1$ is $1.34{\mu_B}/atom$, which is the largest magnitude among moments of five Ni nanowires. The magnetic moment of Ninanowires show to be decreased by increasing the number of atoms in unit cell. The smallest moment is $0.91 {\mu_B}/atom$ for square $Ni_4$ nanowire. The spin polarization of zigzag-square $Ni_4$ nanowire is 32% higher than that of fcc bulk Ni.

  • The Rare Isotope Science Project was launched in 2011 in Korea toward constructing the Rare isotope Accelerator complex for ON line experiments (RAON). RAON will house several experimental systems, including the Muon Spin Rotation/Relaxation/Resonance (μSR) facility in High Energy Experimental Building B. This facility will use 600-MeV protons with a maximum current of 660 pμA and beam power of 400 kW. The key μSR features will facilitate projects related to condensed-matter and nuclear physics. Typical experiments require a few million surface muons fully spin-polarized opposite to their momentum for application to small samples. Here, we describe the design of a muon transport beam line for delivering the requisite muon numbers and the electromagnetic-component specifications in the μSR facility. We determine the beam-line configuration via beam-optics calculations and the transmission efficiency via single-particle tracking simulations. The electromagnet properties, including fringe field effects, are applied for each component in the calculations. The designed surface-muon beamline is 17.3 m long, consisting of 2 solenoids, 2 dipoles affording 70° deflection, 9 quadrupoles, and a Wien filter to eliminate contaminant positrons. The average incident-muon flux and spin rotation angle are estimated as 5.2 × 106 μ+/s and 45°, respectively.

  • Benzylideneacetophenones are known as chalcones[1]. The chalcone has been known to be a photo-isomerizable and photo-dimerizable chromophore. The chalcone derivatives were prepared by base-catalyzed condensation of aldehydes and acetophenones, which were substituted with various alkyl chains. The synthesized chalcone was introduced into the t-BOC protected diamine through William synthesis reaction. Photocrosslinkable polyimide was prepared via one-step imidization reaction of DOCDA (5-(2,5-dioxotetrahydro furyl}-3-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride) and the chalcone introduced diamine using isoquinoline (5 wt%) in m-cresol. The polyimide solutions were spin-coated onto the quartz, silicone wafer and glass substrates and the obtained thin films were irradiated obliquely with linearly polarized UV light.

  • Magnetic and magneto-optical properties of Fe/Pt/Fe, Co/Pd/Co trilayers and also the sandwiches with wedge-shaped magnetic (Fe, Co) and nonmagnetic (Pt, Pd) layers were investigated. The oscillatory behavior of the saturation field $H_{s}$ of the studied trilayers with changing the thickness of the nonmagnetic layer (NML) $t_{NML}$ was revealed. That was explained by the exchange coupling between ferromagnetic layers (FML) through the nonmagnetic spacer. For the first time, oscillations of the transverse Kerr effect (TKE) with changing the Pt- and Pd-wedge thickness were discovered. Period of these oscillations was found to depend on the FML thickness and the photon energy of the incident light. TKE spectra of the examined samples were discovered to modify very strongly with increasing $t_{NML}$. The discovered peculiarities of magneto-optical properties of thin-film systems were explained by a concept of the spin-polarized quantum well states in the pt and Pd layers.

  • The electronic properties of Cu or Pd-doped GaN at several concentrations are examined using the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method. For ($Cu_{0.055}Ga_{0.945}$)N, the model reveals a magnetic moment of $1.47{\mu}B$ per supercell. The range of concentrations that are spin-polarized should be restricted within narrow limits. A paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition is found to occur at a Cu concentration of 5.55%.

  • We investigated the electronic structure and magnetic properties of zinc-blende CrP/SrBi interface by using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method within the generalized gradient approximation. It is found that the half-metallicity is destroyed when the two half-metals are in contact. Magnetic moments of the atoms forming the supercell differ considerably from the respective values obtained for the bulk structures of the two materials. Cr atoms being and not being in contact with Bi atoms have magnetic moment 3.43 and $2.69{\mu}_B$, respectively. Bi atoms lose their majority electrons which results in their negative polarization. Alkaline Sr atoms are very weakly negatively polarized. The spin distribution within the supercell is such that well separated regions of positive and negative polarization are seen, especially around the layer of P atoms being in contact with the layer of Sr atoms.

  • In order to investigate the magnetism of Ru submonolayer on Pb(001), we have performed first-principles calculations for half-layer of Ru on Pd(001) using the full-potential linearzed augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. We have found that the magnetic moment of Ru for 0.5 layer is 2.21 B. It is found that substrate Pd layers are polarized by the 0.5 Ru overlayer to have significant magnetic moments. Our results are compared with those obtained by the anomalous Hall effect. The calculated electronic structures, i,e., the spin densities and density of states are presented and discussed in relation with magnetic properties.
