This study was conducted to find out the effect of ripened grain and rice quality by the breeding of rice dust mite (Steneotarsonemus spinki). Growth temperature of sample (Suwon 441 and Ilpumbyeo) was maintained from 22$^{\circ}C$ (during night) to 26$^{\circ}C$ (during day) in a controlled phytotron. Plant hight and number of panicle could not showed the difference by the discoloration degree of leaf sheath. But number of spikelet was reduced affected by discoloration degree of leaf sheath. Ratio discoloration of grain was increased according to circumstances more discoloration degree of leaf sheath in Suwon 441 then Ilpumbyeo. The perfect rice grain was observed to similar Suwon 441 and Ilpumbyeo in the IV degree of ratio discoloration of grain, but less Suwon 441 than Ilpumbyeo in III and II, in such a case comparison between coloration and discoloration.
Changes of rice yield and soil physicochemical properties of the dry-seeded rice-barley double cropping system were investigated for 10 years from 1990 to 1999. Generally, seedling stand was more unstable in the rice-barley cropping system regardless of barley straw addition or removal than in the rice single cultivation as indicated by higher standard deviation of seedling stand across year. Rice yield in rice-barley double cropping cultivation was increased due to barley straw application starting from the second year, recording 2 to 19% increase (average of 9% for 10 years) due to higher spikelet number. Protein content and Mg/K equivalent ratio were similiar among the barley straw applied field, rice single crop and barley straw removed plots. Also, amylose content was not significantly different among cropping patterns. Physicochemical properties of soil was improved by applying the barley straw; soil porosity was higher and content of organic matter and cation exchange capacity of Ca increased but those of Mg and K did not differ.
This experiment was carried out to evaluate Korean red rices as useful genetic resource. Semi-wild red rices were collected from farmer's field of the Korean peninsula from 1988 to 1991. The collected red rices were classified into two groups according to length /width ratio of paddy rice and ecological characters. One was long grain red rice and the other was short grain red rice. Those were evaluated in yield components, culm length and panicle length. Mean number of panicles per hill of collected long grain red rices was 21.5 and that of short grain was 11.8. Number of spikelets per panicile of the long and short grain red rices were 86.1 and 108.7, respectively. 1000 grains weight of long grain was 20.1g and that of short grain was 20.2g. Spikelet fertility of long and short grain were 80.4% and 79.4%, respectively. Culm length of long grain was 103.6cm and that of short grain was 94.8cm. Panicle length of long and short grain were 22.1cm and 21.3cm, respectively. Number of panicles per hill, number of spikelets per panicle and culm length were significantly different between the two groups, however no differences, in panicle, length and seed fertility were found between the two groups.
To find out the optimum seeding rate in corrugated water seeded rice, field experiment was carried out at Yeongdeog Substation of the National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station for two years, 1994 and 1995. A rice cultivar Donghaebyeo, was seeded on May 15 with five seeding rate from 3kg /10a to 7kg /10a. The number of seedling stand per unit area was curvilinearly increased with seeding rate. In characteristics of rice plant associated with lodging, the plant height, fresh weight per tiller, Culm wall thickness and ratio of gravity center were not significantly different among seeding rates, but the breaking strength of 4th internode was slightly decreased with increasing seeding rate and thus, lodging index was generally greater at higher seeding rate than lower seeding rate. Field lodging was observed at 1~3 degree in seeding rate of 5~7kg /10a. Panicle number per unit area was generally increase with increase of seeding rate, while ratio of ripened grain was decreased with increase of spikelet number. Milled rice yield was curvilinearly increased with seeding rate. The optimum seeding rate in the highest rice yield was 4.8kg /10a in 1994, and 4.3kg /a in 1995, respectively.

We carried out this study to analyze changes of rice grain milling properties according to the transplanting time and to identify genetic resources suitable for improving milling quality of rice in paddy field of Yeongnam area. We analyzed grain filling and milling quality of 30 rice varieties. In late transplanting (June 20), heading date was delayed for 6 days, compared to normal transplanting(June 5). The grain filling ratio (GFR), perfect kernel ratio of milled rice (PKR), and head rice recovery (HRR) were improved in late transplanting. There was no significant difference in head rice yield of two transplanting time, even though the milled rice yield in late transplanting was significantly smaller than that in normal transplanting because of the reduction of spikelet numbers per panicle. The uniformity of brown rice grain measured by selection sieve norm was improve in late transplanting. There was no significant difference of milling loss ratio between normal and late transplanting but there was a trend for a increase of milling necessary time in late transplanting. Thus, our result suggest that optimum transplanting time is June 10 to 15 to improve grain filling and milling quality and produce high head rice yield in the southern paddy plain of Yeongnam region. We selected promising 9 rice varieties which are Nampyeongbyeo, Ilmibyeo, Chucheongbyeo, Dongjinbyeo, Hopyeongbyeo, Malguemi, Chilbo, Hinohikari, and Cheongmu having high percentage of ripened grain and milling quality as genetic resources to improve milling characteristics of rice varieties. Chucheongbyeo, Dongjinbyeo, and Malguemi showed the highest grain filling ratio and Nampyeongbyeo had the highest perfect kernel ratio. Nampyeongbyeo and Ilmibyeo showed the highest head rice yield with more than 500 kg/10a.
For the purpose of investigating the effect of chemical composition of nitrogenous fertilizers such as urea, ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate(dibasic) and aqua-ammonia on growth, yield, efficiency and chemical properties of paddy soil this study was carried out at the same nitrogen concentration through field experiment. The results obtained was summarized as follows. 1. Nitrogenous fertilizers had an effect on plant height at heading stage, plant weight at harvest and No. of spikelet per panicle of rice plants in decreasing order: Ammonium sulfate > Diammonium phosphate > Urea > Ammonia water. But they didn't effect on culm length, spike length, dry matter weight, No. of grain per spike, ripening ratio and weight of 1000 grains of rice plants. 2. The absorbed amount of nitrogen and that of sulfur and nitrogen availability were highest in ammonium sulfate application and lowest in ammonia water application and these were positively correlated with yield. 3. The influence of nitrogenous fertilizers on nitrogen and sulfur efficiency and translocation efficiency was insignificant but that of ammonium sulfate on nitrogen efficiency was higher than that of the others. 4. The effect of nitrogenous fertilizers on a basic chemical properties of paddy soil experimented such as pH, C.E.C, exchangeable cation and organic matter was insignificant. But the sulfur content of ammonium sulfate application and phosphorous content of diammonium phosphate application were higher than that of the others.

Fly ash application with a rate of 0, 50, 100, $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in clay loam paddy, which had properties of pH 5.3 and low contents of silicate and boron, gave a strongly positive effects on the growth and yields of malting barley showing better responses in bituminous coal fly ash(BCFA) than anthracite fly ash(AFA). Especially, soil chemical characteristics improved greatly by fly ash were pH, available phosphate, exchangeable calcium, available silicate, and boron. Shoot length and the number of tiller till defrosting season appeared the most positive responses by application of BCFA $50Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and AFA $100Mg\;ha^{-1}$. However, the number of spikelet per panicle at heading stage was proportionally increased to the rates of each fly ash. As a result, the grain yields of malting barley were increased to $13.8(4.221Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}37.7%(5.106Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by application of BCFA and to $1.1(3.75Mg\;ha^{-1})-20.6%(4.473Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by application of AFA. Protein contents in the grain was the highest in $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$ plot, showing 10.5 and 10.8% by BCFA and AFA application, which were suitable for malting. At harvesting, plants showed 49 and 58% of lodging indices by application of BCFA 100 and $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, which were equivalent to two fold values of those by AFA.
This study was conducted to clarify the effects of duck free-ranging time on the growth and behavior patterns of duck, pH and dissolved oxygen of irrigation water, and growth and yield of the rice plants in paddy fields. Two paddy fields with each 5 aye were used for 12 hours duck free-ranging plot (12HFR) and 24 hours duck free-ranging plot(24HFR). Body weight gain of the duck was not different between 12HFR and 24HFR. Eating and feather grooming behavior in the 12HFR were significantly longer than those of 24HFR, but other behavior patterns were not so. Working behavior and activities of duck in paddy fields tended to be longer in the 12HFR than in 24HFR. However, any difference was not found on staying time of duck in paddy fields. Although it was not statistically significant, pH and dissolved oxygen of irrigation water tended to be higher in the 12HFR than in 24HFR. The plant height of rice in the 12HFR was significantly shorter than that of 24HFR during the latter half period. The number of tillers per hill was significantly increased in the 24HFR than in 12HFR. The shoot dry weight of rice in the 12HFR was significantly less than in the 24HFR during the heading stage of rice plant, but the root dry weight was not different. The number of spikelets per panicle was significantly less in the 12HFR than in 24HFR, however the percentage of ripened grains was significantly higher in the 12HFR. The yield of rice was not significantly different between the treatments. In conclusion, the free-ranging time of duck for 12 hours in paddy fields promoted eating and working behavior of the ducks. Free-ranging time did give effects on rice traits such as the number of tillers per hill, plant height, shoot dry weight of the rice plant, and spikelet number and percentage of ripened grain. However, the duck growth, pH and dissolved oxygen of irrigation water, and paddy rice yield were not affected by duck free-ranging time. These results might suggest that almost same effect as in 24 hours of free-ranging can be obtained with only 12 hours of free-ranging in daytime.
The reducing effect of wind injury was investigated using several wind-break nets in Youngdeok province where cold-wind damage is often occurred during rice growing season. The white-head damage of rice have been often occurred by typhoon during the period between August 15 to September 10 in the cold wind area of the eastern coastal during the last 11 years (1979-1989). This may suggest that the critical period for heading will be by August 15 in the regions. High evaporation coefficient, more than 250 due to typhoon passage over the regions resulted high injury of white head. Generally, the wind injury have been caused by warm and dry westerlies through Fohn apperance in Taebaeg mountains and by cool-humid wind which blows from coast to inland. The frequency of occurrence of the two types of typhoons were 25, 20%, respectively during rice cultivation. The instalation of wind-break net significantly reduced the wind blowing speed, depending on the net mesher with the higher effect in dence net. The distances between the net and cropping area also affect the wind speed: 23% reduction at 1m distance. 34% at 10m and 28% at 20m, respectively. The reducing effect was also observed even at 10 times height of the wind-break net. The instalation of wind-break net gave several effects on climate factor, showing that temperature increased by 0.8$^{\circ}C$(maximum), 0.7$^{\circ}C$(minimum), 0.6$^{\circ}C$(average) : water temperatures increased by 0.5$^{\circ}C$(maximum), 0.6$^{\circ}C$(minimum), 0.5$^{\circ}C$(average) : soil temperature increased 0.4$^{\circ}C$. The earlier heading and increasing growth rate, use of light, culm length, panicle number per hill, spikelet number per panicle, fertility and 1,000 grain weight were observed in the fields with the wind-break nets resulting in 10-15% increase in rice yield using 0.5${\times}$0.5cm nets. The increasing seedlings per hill gave higher grain yield by 13% in the cold wind damage regions of eastern coastals. and the wind-break was more significant in the field without the wind-break net. Wind injury of rice plant in the cold wind regions of eastern coastals in korea could be reduced by selection of tolerant varieties to wind injury, adjustment of transplanting time, and establishment of wind-break nets.
For the increase of grain yield potential in rice, a low-tillering large panicled type has been suggested as an ideotype. A low-tillering plant type may have different yield potential and needs different cultural practices from that used in a high-tillering type for the maximum yield. This study was conducted to evaluate the grain yield performances of a low-tillering large panicled rice and high-tillering small panicled rice at different plant spacings, nitrogen(N) levels and seedling numbers per hill. A low-tillering large panicled genotype, IR25588 was compared with a high-tillering small panicled IR58. The grain yield of IR25588 was significantly higher than that of IR58 under a narrow spacing with high N level. The maximum yields of IR58 and IR25588 were reached at about 35,000 and 40,000 spikelets per m$^2$, respectively. The increased grain yield in IR25588 was mainly due to the increase in spikelet number per unit area which is the most precise indicator of grain yield in rice. The optimum spacing for the maximum yield was denser for IR25588 than that for IR58 under high N level. The intra-hill competition of the low-tillering type was lower than that of the high-tillering type. The higher dry matter production and bigger leaf area and culm weight were the main factors for increased grain yield in a low-tillering panicle weight type. Based on the results, the yield potential of a low-tillering panicle weight type was higher than that of a high-tillering panicle number type, especially under a close spacing with high N level.
