  • Effect of spherodization of cementite on static and dynamic deformation behaviors of SCM415 steels was investigated in this study. Dynamic torsional test was conducted using torsional Kolsky bar with the strain rate of $1.6{\times}10^3/s$. Three type of specimens were used with different spherodization degree of cementite. Dynamic test results were analyzed comparing with static tensile results and microstructural changes. The obtained results are as follows; 1) All the specimens of static and dynamic tests showed a ductile fracture mode of dimple. Specimens of the dynamic test showed adiabatic shear bands on the beneath of fracture surface. 2) In static tensile test, decreased tensile strength and increased uniform and non-uniform elongations appeared as spherodization degree of cementite increased. 3) In dynamic torsional test, decreased shear strength and increased uniform elongation appeared as spherodization degree of cementite increased. 4) Due to the largest uniform elongation, superior cold forgeability at high speed is expected on high spherodization degree of cementite.

  • Conventional spheroidization process of cold heading quality steels requires long heat treatment time, and reduction of the heat treatment time is important for improving productivity in the industry. Recently, hot deformation method has been proposed as a means of increasing spherodization kinetics. In this study, the influences of hot deformation on the spherodization behavior of cold heading quality steels were investigated. Hot deformation at the temperature range of $700^{\circ}C$ significantly enhances the spheroidization kinetics. Hot deformation can lead to a substantial reduction of spherodization process time as low as 1~5 hrs.

  • The effects of annealing temperature and time on mechanical properties and microstructures were studied in cold drawn pearlitic steel wires containing 0.84wt% Si. Annealing was performed from $200^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$ with different time of 30sec, 1min, 15min and 1hr. The increase of tensile strength at low temperature was related with strain ageing. The decrease of tensile strength at high annealing temperature was related with spherodization of cementite and the occurrence of recovery of the lamellar ferrite in the pearlite. The improvement of ductility was connected with spherodization of cementite plate in pearlite and recovery process by reduction of high dislocation density at short time annealing temperature of $400^{\circ}C$.

  • The microstructural changes during semi-solid state processing of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy has been investigated in the present study. Stirring of semi-solid slurry results in the morphological changes of the primary Si particles, i.e. from angular rod shape to near-spherical shape. Besides the spherodization of primary Si particles, the average particle size increases, especially, at much higher rate in the final stage than that in the early stage of stirring. Various microstructure characterization techniques, such as anisotropic etching, SEM imaging and ECP analysis, reveal that the spherodization of primary Si particles occurs by the combinations of the mechanisms of coalescence, fracture, and wear of the individual particles. Isothermal shearing of hypereutectic Al-Si at $580^{\circ}C$ shows that spherical ${\alpha}-Al$ particles are formed by the dissociation of Al-Si eutectic structure at the early stage of isothermal shearing. The spherical ${\alpha}-Al$ particles gradually grow by the mechanisms of Ostwald ripening and coalescence of the particles.

  • Carbon nanofiber/Cu composite powder has been fabricated by electroless plating process. Microstructural evolution of the composite powder after heat treatment under vacuum, hydrogen and air environment was investigated. A dispersed carbon nanofiber coated by copper was produced at the as-plated condition. Carbon nanofiber is coated uniformly and densely with the plate shaped copper particles. The copper plates on the carbon nanofiber aggregate during the thermal exposure at elevated temperature in vacuum and hydrogen in order to reduce surface energy. The thermal exposure of the composite powder in air at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours leads to the spherodization of the composite powder owing to oxidation of copper.

  • The semisolid processing of two Al-Si alloys, A356 and Al-25wt%Si, was studied with using the rotor composed of permanent magnets. The semisolid slurry was agitated by the electromagnetic force induced from the rotating permant magnets. The round shaped primary ${\alpha}$ phases were formed in A356 alloy as a result of agitation. In Al25wt%Si alloy, spherodization of primary Si particles was not observed with the rotation of the magnets. The primary Si particles were segregated to the outer surface area of sample, which became pronounced with increasing the rotating speed of magnets.

  • In the present study, the effect of cold reduction ratio on the spherodization rate of SK85 high carbon steel sheet was investigated. High carbon steel sheet fabricated by POSCO was soaked at $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in a box furnace and then treated at $570^{\circ}C$ for 5 min in a salt bath furnace followed by water quenching to obtain a fine pearlite structure. Cold rolling was conducted on the sheets of fine pearlite by reduction ratios of 20, 30, and 40 % and heat treatment for spheroidization was carried out at $720^{\circ}C$ for the various time intervals from 0.1 to 32 hrs. Area fraction of spheroidized cementite was measured with an image analyzer as a function of cold reduction ratios and duration times.

  • The spheroidization of cold rolled lamellar pearlite in annealing at the temperatures between 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ has been studied by quantitative micrography. It was foud that the spheroidization proceeded as two stageh. The first stage was the stage of relieving the stored energy by cold work, the second was the stage of reducing the interface energy between ferrite and cementite. The spheroidization rate combining the spheroidization rate of each stages is described by the following equation : $$d(1/S)/dt=k_3{\cdot}D/_{(1/s)}\{{\sigma}V/_{(1/s)}+k_4{\cdot}{\exp}(-bt)\}$$ Where, S is the total area of the interface between ferrite and cementite per unit volume, D is the diffusion coefficient, ${\sigma}$ is the boundary energy, V is the volume fraction of the cementite, and $k_3$, $k_4$, b are constants.
