Natural silica sand was commonly used for sand casting of cast steel products, and chromites sand was used to suppress seizure defects due to the lack of thermal properties of silica sand. However there are disadvantages such as deterioration by repeated use, system sand mixing problem, difficulty separating and removing, increased during mold according to high density and to being waste containing chrome. Recently, industrial waste reduction and atmospheric environment improvement have been highlighted as important tasks in the casting industry. In order to solve the problems that occur when using foundry Sand and to improve the environment of casting factories, various artificial sands that can be applied instead of natural silica sand have been developed and introduced. Artificial sands can be classified into artificial sand manufactured by the electric arc atomization or gas flame atomization, artificial sand manufactured by the spray drying & sintering process, artificial sand manufactured by the sintering & crushing process and exhibit different physical properties depending on the type of raw-minerals and manufacturing method. In this study, comparative evaluation tests were conducted on the physical properties of various foundry sands, mold strength, physical durability, thermal durability, and casting test pieces. When comprehensively considering the actual amount of molding sand used according to density, the mold strength according to the shape of sand, the physical and thermal durability of foundry sand, and the heat resistance characteristics of foundry sand, 'Molten artificial sand A1' or 'Molten artificial sand B' is judged to be the most suitable spherical artificial sand for casting of heavy steel castings.

The spherical particles of $CeO_2/SiO_2$ composite powder with narrow-size distribution and pure phase particles were synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method from aqueous cerium sulfate solution. The resulting composite powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmittance electron microscopy, in-vitro sun protect factor, and BET surface area analysis. The concentration of cerium sulfate was tested to vary the particle size from $3.40{\times}10^{-3}$ to $1.02{\times}10^{-2}mol/cm^3$ to study concentration effect of starting material. The average particle size from the $3.40{\times}10^{-3}mol/cm^3$ concentration was found to be slightly smaller than that from the $1.02{\times}10^{-2}mol/cm^3$ concentration, because of the relation between the droplet size and the concentration of the starting material solution.
Excessive phosphorus in aquatic systems causes algal bloom resulting in eutrophication, DO depletion, decline in recreational value of water and foul tastes. To treat wastewater containing phosphorus including effluent of wastewater treatment plant, the continuous experiments were performed by using electrochemical way. The spherical ZVI and silica sand which act as physical filter are packed at appropriate volume ratio of 1:2. Electric potential is applied externally which can be changed as per the operational requirement. The results indicate that optimum hydraulic retention time of 36 minutes (10 mL/min at 1 L reactor) was required to meet the effluent standards. Lower concentrations of phosphorus (<10 mg/L as phosphate) were removed by precipitation by contact with iron. Thus, additional electric potential was not required. In order to remove high concentration phosphorus around 150 mg/L as phosphate, external electric potential of 600 V was applied to the reactor.
Degradation of rice straw was observed to be higher (p<0.01) in the buffaloes than in cattle. At 48 h, the dry matter (DM) loss of straw for buffaloes was 53.6 0.8% and that for cattle was 48.7 2.6%. Palm press fibre (PPF) was poorly degraded in the rumen of both animal species. A loss of about 21% DM was observed in both cattle and buffaloes after 48 h of incubation in the rumen. The pattern of bacterial and fungal colonization of straw and PPF seemed to be similar in both cattle and buffaloes. Microbial colonization was restricted by plant structures like the silica crystals in both straw and PPF. The predominant bacteria colonizing both straw and PPF fragments were the rods. Eroded zones and digestion pits were pronounced in straw fragments after 1 h of incubation. The PPF fragments appeared undegraded even after 6 h of incubation. Fungal colonization of straw was rapid and extensive in both cattle and buffaloes. The sporangia observed in straw were mainly spherical or oval in shape, but fusiform sporangia with acuminate tip were predominantly seen in PPF fragments.
A periodic mesoporous organosilica material was synthesized by microwave heating (PMO-M) using 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane as a precursor in a cationic surfactant solution, and textural properties were compared with those of the product produced by conventional convection heating (PMO-C). These synthesized materials were characterized using XRD, TEM/SEM, N2 adsorption isotherm, 29Si and 13C NMR, and TGA, which confirmed their good structural orders and clear arrangements of uniform 3D-channels. Synthesis time was reduced from 21 h in PMO-C to 2-4 h in PMO-M. PMO-M was made of spherical particles of 1.5-2.2 m m size, whereas PMO-C was made of decaoctahedron-shaped particles of ca. 8.0 m m size. Effect of synthesis temperature, time, and heating mode on the PMO particle morphology was examined. The particle size of PMO-M could be controlled by changing the heating rate by adjusting microwave power level. PMO-M demonstrated improved separation of selected organic compounds compared to PMO-C in a reversed phase HPLC experiment. Ti-grafted PMO-M also resulted in higher conversion in liquid phase cyclohexene epoxidation than by Ti-PMO-C.
Formation of the monodisperse submicrospheres consisting of ionic palladium(II) complexes, $[(Me_4en)Pd(L)]_2(X)_4$($Me_4en$ = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine; L = bis(4-(4-pyridylcarboxyl)phenyl)methane; $X^-=BF_4{^-}$ and $ClO_4{^-}$), has been carried out without any templates or additives. The submicrospheres were coated with silicates, and then calcined in air at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, to efficiently form hollow-spherical $SiO_2$ submicro-reactors dotted with palladium(0) nanoparticles (PdNPs). That is, the submicrospheres act as both a template and a source of the palladium metal nanoparticles. The submicro-reactors containing nano-catalysts have been characterized by means of SEM, TEM, and XPS. Notably, the reactors were proved to be very effective for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and hydrogenation reactions.
This paper presents apparent thermal conductivity of various powder at different vacuum levels for cryogenic insulation. Four kinds of powder insulator are examined by using boil-off calorimetry at pressure range from 50 Torr to 3 mTorr. The first material is perlite which is widely used in cryogenic application. Microsphere is the second one that is recently proposed as a replacement powder for liquid hydrogen storage tanks. It is a hollow sphere made of silica with the diameter in the order of 10 to $100{\mu}m$. Popped rice and polystyrene beads are also selected as candidates for powder insulation even though they are polymers. With their porous elliptic and spherical configuration and light density, they demonstrate fairly good thermal insulation performance at pressure range from 50 Torr to 3 mTorr. According to the experimental investigation in this paper, microsphere and polystyrene beads possess promising insulation characteristic as powder insulators and further study is desired.
A suspension polymerization of styrene In aqueous phase was employed to study if polystyrene particles ranging from 1 to $20{\mu}m$ can be produced. Hydrophobic silica was selected as a stabilizer and azo-bisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. Polymerization reaction was carried out at a selected temperature in the range of $65{\sim}95^{\circ}C$. Stabilizer concentration was varied from 0.17 to 3.33 wt% compared to the water while the concentration of the initiator was raised from 0.13 to 6.0 wt% compared to the monomer. Dispersion of hydrophobic silica into the water phase was achieved by precise control of pH. Optimum dispersion of silica was obtained at pH 10. Average particle diameter decreased with increasing amounts of stabilizer concentration initially, exhibiting the minimum average diameter at 1.67 wt% of stabilizer concentration, after which it started to Increase. It is speculated that an excessive presence of stabilizer encouraged a secondary reaction in the reaction medium, which led to particle agglomeration, and as a result an increase in average particle diameter. Molecular weight was found to be independent of stabilizer concentration between 0.13 and 1.00 wt% whereas, it increased when stabilizer concentration exceeded 1.67 wt%. Variation of molecular weight was probably caused by the reduced activity and efficiency of initiator due to the high concentration of silica, and the secondary reaction in the reaction medium, as well. An increase in the Initiator concentration and/or reaction temperature resulted in an increase in both reaction rate and particle diameter. Consequently, we have confirmed that spherical polystyrene particles with $1{\sim}20{\mu}m$ in diameter can be prepared by careful selection of the concentration of stabilizer, initiator, pH and reaction temperature.

The actinomycete strain JK-1 that showed strong inhibitory activity against some plant pathogenic fungi and oomycetes was isolated from Jung-bal Mountain in Ko-yang, Korea. The strain JK-1 produced spores singly borne on sporophores and the spores were spherical and 0.9-1.2 11m in diameter. The cell wall of the strain JK-1 contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The actinomycete strain JK-1 was identified as the genus Micromonospora based on the morphological, physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics. From the 168 rDNA analysis, the strain JK-1 was assigned to M aurantiaca. The antibiotic MA-1 was purified from the culture broth of M aurantiaca JK-1 using various purification procedures, such as Diaion HP20 chromatography, C18 flash column chromatography, silica gel flash column chromatography and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. $^{1}H-$, $^{13}C-NMR$ and EI mass spectral analysis of the antibiotic MA-1 revealed that the antibiotic MA-1 is identical to phenylacetic acid. Phenylacetic acid showed in vitro inhibitory effects against fungal and oomycete pathogens Alternaria mali, Botrytis cinerea, Magnaporthe grisea, Phytophthora capsici and yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae at < 100 $\mug$$ml^{-1}$. In addition, phenylacetic, acid completely inhibited the growth of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria at < $\mug$$ml^{-1}$. Phenylacetic acid strongly inhibited conidial germination and hyphal growth of M grisea and C. orbiculare. Phenylacetic acid showed significantly high levels of inhibitory' effect against rice blast and cucumber anthracnose diseases at 250 $\mug$$ml^{-1}$. The control efficacies of phenylacetic acid against the two diseases were similar to those of commercial compounds tricyclazole, iprobenfos and chlorothalonil .n the greenhouse.
The bioactivity of glasses in the CaO-SiO2 system and CaO-P2O5-SiO2 system with less than 10mol% of P2O5 was investigated by in vitro test in simulated body flood(SBF). The formation of Ca.P film and hydroxyapatite on the surface of glasses after in vitro test was analysed by X-ray photoelectron spectoscopy (XPS), fourier transform infrared reflection spectroscopy (FT-IRRS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation. In the early stage of Ca.P film formation after in vitro test for CaO-SiO2 and CaO-P2O5-SiO2 glasses, the rate of Ca.P film formation on the surface of the glasses was dependent of structural parameter (Y) evaluated from the glass composition. First, in the case of the glasses having Y value below 2, Ca.P film and SiO2-rich layer were formed simultaneously, and there were no differences of the rate of Ca.P film formation in terms of the Y values. Second, in the case of the glasses having Y value above 2, the SiO2-rich layer was formed, and then Ca.P.Si mixed layer was formed in the silica gel structure of the SiO2-rich layer, and finally the Ca.P film on the surface of SiO2-rich layer. The rate of Ca.P film formation delayed as the Y values increased. The rate of hydroxyapatite formation of glasses (the rate of transformation from Ca.P film to hydroxyapatite) seems to be propotional to the rate of Ca.P film formation and Y value. The rate of hydroxyapatite formation of glasses belonging to the second group was delayed as structural parameter increased, and the hydroxyapatite crystal showed spherical growth in the early reaction stage, and then showed silkworm-like linear growth as the reaction time increased.
