  • GDC20($Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{1.9}$) powder was synthesized from Ce and Gd nitrate solutions using ammonium carbonate($(NH_4)_2CO_3$) as a precipitant. Attrition-milling of the powder, which had been calcined at $700^{\circ}C$ for 4 h, decreased an average particle size of 2.2 ${\mu}m$ to 0.5 ${\mu}m$. The milled powder consisted of nano-sized spherical primary particles. Due to the excellent sinterability of the powder, sintering of the powder compacts for 4 h showed relative densities of 80% at 1000 $^{\circ}C$ and 96.5% at $1200^{\circ}C$, respectively. Densification was found to almost complete at $1300^{\circ}C$, resulting in a dense and homogeneous microstructure with a relative density of 99.5%. The grains of ~0.2 ${\mu}m$ in size at $1200^{\circ}C$ grew to ~1 ${\mu}m$ in size at $1300^{\circ}C$ as a result of a rapid grain growth.

  • Spherical nanosized cobalt powder with an average size of 150-400 nm was successfully prepared at room temperature from cobalt sulfate heptahydrate ($CoSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$). Wet chemical reduction method was adopted to synthesize nano cobalt powder and hypophosphorous acid ($H_3PO_2$) was used as reduction agent. Both the HCP and the FCC Co phase were developed while $CoSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ concentration ranged from 0.7 M to 1.1 M. Secondary phase such as $Co(OH)_2$ and $CO_3O_4$ were also observed. Peaks for the crystalline Co phase having HCP and FCC structure crystallized as increasing the concentration of $H_3PO_2$, indicating that the amount of reduction agent was enough to reduce $Co(OH)_2$. Consequently, a homogeneous Co phase could be developed without second phase when the $H_3PO_2/CoSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ ratio exceeded 7.

  • The slip casting process is widely used to make green bodies from ceramic slips into dense compacts with homogeneous microstructure. However, stress may be generated inside the green body during drying, and can lead to cracking and bending during sintering. When starting from the spherical powders with mono-size distribution to make the close packed body, interstitial voids on octahedral and tetrahedral sites are formed. In this research, experiments were carried out with powders of three size types (host powder (H), octahedral void filling powder (O) and tetrahedral void filling powder (T)) controlled for average particle size by milling from two commercial alumina powders. Slips were prepared using three different powder batches from H only, H+O or H+O+T mixed powders. After manufacturing green compacts by solid-casting, compacts were dried at constant temperature and humidity and sintered at $1650^{\circ}C$. Alumina samples fabricated from the multi-sized powder mixture had improved compacted and sintered densities.

  • The formation of a thicker hard alloyed layer have been investigated on the surface of aluminum cast alloy (AC2B) by PTA overlaying process with Cr, Cu and Ni motel powders under the condition of overlaying current 125-200A. overlaying speed 150 mm/min and different powder feeding rate 5-20 g/min. In addition the characteristics of hardening and wear resistance of alloyed layer here been examined in relation to the microstructure of alloyed layer. Main results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) There was an optimum overlaying condition to get a good alloyed layer with smooth surface. This good layer became easy to be formed as increasing overlaying current and decreasing powder feeding rate under a constant overlaying speed. 2) Cu powder was the most superior one in metal powders used due to a wide optimum overlaying condition range, uniform hardness distribution of Hv250-350, good oar resistance and freedom from cracking in alloyed layer with fine hyper-eutectic structure. 3) On the contrary, irregular hardness distribution was usually obtained in Cr ar Ni alloyed layers of which hardness was increased as Cr or Ni contents and reached to maximum hardness of about Hv400-850 at about 60wt%cr or 40wt%Ni in alloyed layer. 4) Cracking occurred in Cr or Ni alloyed layers with higher hardness than Hv250-300 at mere than 20-25wt% of Cr or Ni contents in alloyed layer. Porosity was observed in all alloyed layers but decreased by usage of spherical powder with smooth surface.

  • Newly modified spray Pyrolysis system was developed to Produce ultra Pure and fine Powder by spray Pyrolysis Process. In this system, raw material solution was effectively atomized and sprayed into the reaction furnace. Also, thermal decomposition process fully completed in the three zone reaction furnace, and produced powder was effectively collected. A technology to reduce impurities in complex acid solution below 20ppm was also developed. The characteristics of produced powder were studied by changing the reaction conditions such as reaction temperature, the injection velocity of the solution and air, nozzle tip size and concentration of solution. The morphology of powder had spherical shape under the most experimental conditions, and the composition and the particle size distribution were almost uniform. Under the most experimental conditions average particle size of most produced powder was below 100nm.

  • Aluminum-based powders have attracted attention as key materials for 3D printing owing to their low density, high specific strength, high corrosion resistance, and formability. This study describes the effects of TiC addition on the microstructure of the A6013 alloy. The alloy powder was successfully prepared by gas atomization and further densified using an extrusion process. We have carried out energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to investigate the effect of TiC addition on the microstructure and texture evolution of the A6013 alloy. The atomized A6013-xTiC alloy powder is fine and spherical, with an initial powder size distribution of approximately 73 ㎛ which decreases to 12.5, 13.9, 10.8, and 10.0 ㎛ with increments in the amount of TiC.

  • In order to investigate the ball-milling effect on the property changes of UO$_2$ ex-AUC powder, the sinterability of ball -milled powder was studied in terms of the ball -milling time. Spherical shape was found to be kept for ball-milled UO$_2$ powder and the particle size showed a bimodal distribution, which seems to have a higher packing ratio compared with those having monomodal gaussian distribution. The increase of sintered density of the ball -milled UO$_2$ powder is assumed to be mainly affected by the packing ratio, which increase with longer ball -milling time. It is confirmed that the sinterability of UO$_2$ ex-AUC powder is improved by the ball-milling process.

  • This study investigated the effects of ball mill operation condition on the morphology of raw powders in the dry-type milling process using three types of ball mills traditional ball mill, stirred ball mill and planetary ball mill. Furthermore, since spherical powders offer the best combination of high hardness and high density, the optimum milling condition to produce sphere-shaped powders was studied. The applied rotation speed ranged from 200rpm (low rotation speed) to 700rpm (high rotation speed). The used ball size ranged from 1mm to 5mm. The metal powder morphology was studied using SEM, XRD and PSA. The aimed spherical powders could be obtained under the optimum experimental conditions: traditional ball mill(200rpm, 1mm ball), planetary ball mill (500rpm, 1mm ball) and also planetary ball mill (700rpm, 1 and 3 mm ball). The results show to the development of new material using spherical type copper powder/CNT composites for air-craft and automotive applications.

  • To increase the capacity of positive electrode materials for matching the high capacity negative electrode materials in alkaline rechargeable batteries, high-density nickel hydroxide powders were made through a continuous process from nickel sulfate reacted with ammonia and sodium hydroxidc. The effect of operating conditions on structure, shape, size distribution, apparent density and tap density of powders were investigated. Crystal structure of nickel hydroxide powder was hcp according to Bravais Lattice. The increase of mean residence time promoted the growth of (101) plane. The shape of powder was nearly spherical. Their size was in the range of $2~50\mu\textrm{m}$. The size distribution of the powders prepared was narrower than that of commercially obtained nickel hydroxide. Apparent density and tap density were 1.6~1.7g/cc and 2.0~2.1g/cc, respectively.
