  • A new approach to retrieve the single-scattering albedo (SSA) of Asian dust plume, mixed with pollution particles, using multi-wavelength Raman lidar system was suggested in this study. Asian dust plume was separated as dust and non-dust particle (i.e. spherical particle) by the particle depolarization ratio at 532 nm. The vertical profiles of optical properties (the particle extinction coefficient at 355 and 532 nm and backscatter coefficient at 355, 532 and 1064 nm) for non-dust particle were used as input parameter for the inversion algorithm. The inversion algorithm provides the vertical distribution of microphysical properties of non-dust particle only so that the estimation of the SSA for the Asian dust in mixing state was suggested in this study. In order to estimate the SSA for the mixed Asian dust, we combined the SSA of non-dust particles retrieved by the inversion algorithms with assumed the SSA of 0.96 at 532 nm for dust. The retrieved SSA of Asian dust plume by lidar data was compared with the Aerosol Robotics Network (AERONET) retrieved values and showed good agreement.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the fundamental data for the mass seedling production of grunt, Hapalogenys nitens in terms of the natural spawning and some characteristics of the eggs spawned. The wild grunt were reared at indoor tanks for three years. The adults spawners were 34.0∼44.0 cm (38.6$\pm$4.0 cm, n=7) in total length, 1.00∼2.23 kg (1.62$\pm$0.50 kg, n=7) in body weight. Spawning were observed 9 times from September 22 to October 1, 2000 and 37 times from August 22 to October 3, 2001, with a water temperature range of 19.8$\pm$28.5$^{\circ}C$. The total number of eggs collected was 2.29${\times}$10$^{7}$ (1.7${\times}$10$^{3}$/ml). The relative proportion of floating eggs to total eggs was 41.7%. The fertilization rate of floating eggs was ranged between 85.0 and 99.9% and the hatching rate was ranged between 2.9 and 93.0%. Fertilized eggs were buoyant and spherical in shape, and were 0.85∼0.98 mm in diameter. Each egg contained 1-5 oil globules which were, 0.18∼0.25 mm in diameter. The incubation time from fertilization to blastodisc formation was 10 minutes, to blastula was 3 hours, and to the hatched larvae at 26$^{\circ}C$ was 20 hours 30 minutes. The newly hatched larvae attained total length of 1.81$\pm$0.18 mm. The time required from fertilization to hatching was 31∼34 hours at 23$^{\circ}C$ and 17∼20 hours at 29$^{\circ}C$.

  • High NA objective design by using SELFOC materials was studied, and two kinds of objective for optical pick-up were designed. The SELFOC materials have radial gradient index distribution, and it gives additional degree of freedom in optical design. Therefore, we expect that optical design of high NA objective without aspheric surface will be possible. In this study, the variation of ms spot diameter was investigated as a function of quadratic constant and refractive index on axis for various combinations of axial thickness and entrance pupil diameter. For the survey, Code V was used for optimization and evaluation of the objective lenses. The result suggested that larger quadratic constant and higher refractive index on axis could give us better imaging performance for all combinations of axial thickness and pupil diameter. Based on the survey, we designed high NA objectives for DVR. There were two kinds of design solution consisting two spherical SELFOC lenses. The solution I had positive-positive lens configuration with short over-all-length, but it had poor off-axial performance compared with the solution II. The solution II had negative-positive lens configuration with good off-axial imaging performance. But the solution II had some disadvantages, long over-all-length and large diameter of the second lens.

  • The geometrical shape of a plow bottom may be the most important factor affecting the performance of a plow for a given soil and operating conditions. There are various designs of the Jaenggi (Korean plow) available commercially, which may be different from each other and from the plow (Western plow) in respect to the shape and performance. This study was intended to investigate the geometrical characteristics of Jaenggi. The coordinate digitizer equipped with 3 potentiometers was designed and manufactured for measurement of the shape of curved plane of moldboard and share. The digitizer was connected to a microcomputer having the data acquisition system. This device was used to analyze the plow bottoms of 5 differently-made Jaenggis and one cylindrical plow. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. It was possible to measure easily and quickly the curved plane of plow bottom and to plot the view on three major plans using the coordinate digitizer electrically connected to a microcomputer system. 2. The shape of five Jaenggi bottoms analyzed could be characterized by the cutting angle having the range of $33-42^{\circ}$, the maximum share-lift angle of $41-50^{\circ}$, and the setting angle of moldboard wing of $46-70^{\circ}$. The most critical difference of the shape factors between the Jaenggi and the plow was found in the maximum share-lift angle, the former was more than twice as much as the latter. 3. The analysis of the shape of Jaenggi bottoms showed that the share projections on 3 major plans had a varied triangle, which was quite different from that of plow bottom. Especially, it was analyzed that the shape of furrow slice for the Jaenggi had a skewed rectangle, leaving a considerable height of the ridge at the furrow bottom. 4. The dihedral angle was similar range of $30-85^{\circ}$ for the all bodies investigated, but the directional angle was somewhat different from each other. The difference in directional angle was $5^{\circ}$ for the plow, $20^{\circ}$ for the Jaenggi A and $30^{\circ}$ for the Jaenggi B. 5. Area of the spherical representation region was 0.0328 for the plow, 0.1194 for the Jaenggi A and 0.1716 for the Jaenggi B. This may indicate that the plow came close to a working surface and the Jaenggi A and the Jaenggi B departed from a working surface to a somewhat greater extent.

  • We performed refraction, keratometry, slit lamp biomicroscopy. We selected 58 current spherical RGP lens wearers for this three-month study. All patients exhibits at least 0.75D of corneal astigmatism measured with the keratometer, and 37 patients had corneal astigmatism of 1.50D or greater. At least follow-up visit, we measured Snellen acuity with lenses, and performed overrefraction, overkeratometry and slit lamp biomicroscopy. We charted lens position, movement and surface quality. During the three month, biomicroscopy revealed no corneal edema and neovascularization on any patients. Fluorescein staining were 52 patients case of grade 0.5 patients case of grade 1, and 1 patient case of grade 2. In evaluating post-fit residual cylinder, on overrefraction as a percentage of refractive cylinder. By the initial visit, one-week visit, one-month visit, and two-month visit are 41%, 34%, 29%, respectively. In this data, we knew no change after one month. The average overrefraction for these eyes in absolute diopters is 0.26D(initial visit), 0.22D(one-week visit, 0.17D(one-month visit), and 0.16D(two-month visit). The use of a regimen containing a dedicated daily cleaner was more effective in maintaining patient comfort and lens cleanliness than was the use of a regimen containing only a multipurpose solution.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the design identity visual elements of optical shop brand$\underline{s}$ in order to provide objective data necessary for optical shop brands' design development. Methods: This study examined the design identity concept of the optical shop brands and analyzed visual elements of brand design identity with a focus on the symbols of domestic franchise optical shops, type of a symbol mark, representation style of logo type, color usage, use or non-use of character, etc. Results: Many symbols were directly associated with the eyeglasses, such as eyeglasses and eyes, face and iris. Along with that, letters or figures were also observed. For the type of symbol, most types were found to have the designs that took spherical and word mark shapes. Particularly, the word mark type had English words more often than Korean words. For logo types, the gothic format was dominant. In relation to the thickness of letter, thick boldface type was commonly used. The combination of 2 degrees was the color frequency used most often in the optical shop brand design. For the frequency of color usage, black and red colors were used most often. Particularly, the orange color, as well as the black color, was also often used for the main color of symbols or logo types. Meanwhile, the characters were used only in some optical shop. Most characters were animals and expressed in the cartoon and graphical forms. Conclusions: Typifier, symbol mark, logo type, color, and character are the elements forming the basic development system for brand design identity. Systematic design is needed which clearly ensures the function and role along with the mutual consistency as a important visual component of the optical shop brand.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the amount of calcium fluoride deposited on the enamel and dentin surface and to obtain information on the morphological change and crystallographic details of mineral deposition after 12,000ppm APF application in vitro. The bovine enamel and dentin blocks were randomly assigned to eight groups according to artificial caries lesion formation and difference of fluoride application time. The fluoride concentration and morphological characteristics on the treated enamel and dentin surface were investigated by using fluoride quantitative analysis and SEM. The powdered enamel and dentin of the intact bovine incisors were prepared for the X-ray diffraction analysis. The following results were obtained. 1. The amounts of KOH-soluble fluoride on the carious enamel and dentin surface after 24h APF application were higher than after only 5min APF application(p<0.05), but in the case of the sound enamel and dentin surface were similar after 5min and 24h application (P>0.05). The fluoride content was highly increased in the carious dentin as compared with sound dentin after APF application(P<0.05). 2. The carious enamel surface after APF application, the demineralized enamel surface were recovered a more dense enamel surface and precipitation of crystal was observed a distintive surface layer of spherical globules of about 1 m diameter. In the case of the fluorided carious dentin surface, precipitation of calcium fluoride-like material was deposited both inside the dentinal tubules as well as in the intertubular regions. 3. The crystallographic structure of powdered enamel and dentin after 24h APF application had large crystallities of apatite and CaF2 diffraction peaks in the enamel as compared with dentin. The diffraction data collected from the 27.50-29.50(2) angular range of the powdered enamel, the (105) apatite, (225) apatite and (111) CaF2 peaks of the enamel crystallities were detected after 24h APF application.

  • The aims of the study were to evaluate the effect of epinephrine-containing local anesthetics on pulpal blood flow (PBF) and to investigate its effect on cavity preparation-induced PBF change. PBF was recorded using a laser Doppler flowmeter (Perimed Co., Sweden) from canines of nine cats under general anesthesia before and after injection of local anesthetics and after cavity preparation. 2% lidocaine hydrochloride with 1 : 100,000 epinephrine was administered by local infiltration given apical to the mandibular canine at the vestibular area and the same volume of isotonic saline was injected on the contralateral tooth as a control. A round carbide bur was operated at slow speed with isotonic saline flushing to grind spherical cavities with increasing depth through the enamel and into the dentin on both teeth. The obtained data was analyzed with paired t-test. Cavity preparation caused significant increase of PBF (n = 9, p < 0.05). Local infiltration of lidocaine with epinephrine resulted in decreases of PBF (n = 9, p < 0.05), whereas there was no significant change of PBF with the physiologic saline as a control. Cavity preparation on tooth anesthetized with lidocaine with epinephrine caused significantly less increase of PBF than in control tooth (p < 0.05). Therefore, the result of the present study demonstrates that local infiltration of 2% lidocaine with 1 : 100,000 epinephrine effectively reduces PBF increase caused by cavity preparation.

  • The immobilization and consolidation of the model coatings based on the plastic pigment and latex binder of known particle sizes were theoretically Studied in terms of the dense random packing of binary spheres and varying extent of latex film shrinkage. The porosity of the model coatings was calculated based on three proposed latex shrinkage models: Maximum, Minimum, and Linearly Decreasing Latex Shrinkage. The increasing extent of latex shrinkage was calculated up to the critical pigment volume concentration(CPVC) as a function of plastic pigment volume fractions, and the maximum latex shrinkage was estimated from the CPVC. Also, the number of pores and the average equivalent spherical pore diameters were calculated based on those proposed models. The opacity and gloss of the model coatings on polyester films were measured and their porosity was also determined by a simple coat weight-thickness method. As expected, various coating structure-property-composition relationships, such as opacity, gloss, porosity, etc., were shown to exhibit sharp transitions near the CPVC. The CPVC values determined by the opacity, gloss, and porosity vs. PVC relationships, respectively, agreed very well with each other. Especially, the CPVC's determined by the opacity and porosity vs. PVC curves were identical. The comparison between the theoretically calculated and experimental porosity values showed that the intermediate value between the maximum and minimum latex shrinkage would best fit the experimental porosity data. The effect of plastic pigment particle size on the optical properties and porosity of model coatings was also studied and it was observed that the coating opacity and porosity increased with increasing plastic pigment particle size, but the gloss decreased. The ink gloss of the uncalendered model coatings applied onto commercial sheet offset coated papers was shown to be affected by both the coating gloss and porosity: the higher the coating gloss, the higher the ink gloss, but the higher the coating porosity, the lower the ink gloss. Their printability was also studied in terms of the number of passes-to-fail and the rate of ink setting as a function of both plastic pigment volume fractions and plastic pigment particle sizes. A minimum crack-free temperature(MCR) of latex-bound coatings was proposed to better predict the behaviors of latexes as coating binders. The wet state of model coating dispersions, the surfaces of consolidated model coatings, and their internal structure were examined by both electron and atomic force microscopy, and their micrographs were found to be consistent with our immobilization and consolidation models.
