This study was conducted to increase the income of cactus farm by selecting cheaper and better media than the peat moss using for Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'Huhong'. We cultivated Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'Huhong' on 10 kinds of media (peat moss, culture medium, coco peat, sphagnum moss, hydro ton, hydro cray, hydro bal, hugato, vermiculite, perlite) and analyzed media's physiochemical factors and growth, betacyanin. The results were as follows: In case of media's physical condition planting Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'Huhong' after 90 days, an approximate value with peat moss is culture medium and coco peat. Also, coco peat has no change in chemical media. The rate of growth and development is high in Coco peat while overall culture medium and coco peat was seen lower growth. The level of betacyanin in subirrigation is higher than overhead irrigation. Meanwhile, hugato among 10 kinds of media has high value in both of overhead irrigation and bottom watering. Thus, culture medium and coco peat is proper for alternation of peat moss due to similar value with peat moss. And coco peat is favorable to media, growth condition, pigment.

Peat humin(p-Humin) extracted from Canadian Sphagnum peat moss was packed in a column and removal of heavy metal ions such as Cd, Cu and Pb from aqueous solution under flow conditions was studied. The metal ions were removed not only from single-element solutions but also from a multi-metal solution. Column kinetics for metal removal were described by the Thomas model. For single-component metal solutions, the maximum adsorption capacities of the p-Humin for Pb, Cu and Cd were 138.8, 44.66 and 41.61 mg/g, respectively. The results of multi-component competitive adsorption showed that adsorption affinity was in the order of Pb $\gg$ Cu > Cd. The adsorbed metal ions were easily deserted from the p-Humin with 0.05 N $HNO_3$ solution. It is apparent that 95% of the heavy metal ions were recovered from the saturated column. This investigation provides possibility to clean up heavy-metal contaminated waste waters by using the natural biomass, p-Humin as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective new biosorbents.
Sphagnum palustre is a semi aquatic moss. S. palustre has been used as Korean traditional medicine to treat cardiac pain and stroke. This study was carried out to analyze phytochemical constituents of S. palustre and investigate the biological activity for the promotion of human health. At first, we isolated seven compounds from the ethanolic extract of this plant, and their structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods. Their structures were characterized to be Coumarin(1), Caffeic acid(2), Quercetin(3), Astragalin(4), Luteolin(5), Chlorogenic acid(6), Rutin(7) were for the first time reported from this source. The ethanol extract from S. palustre which was tested for its anticancer activity against three human tumor cell line by in vitro assay.
This survey report introduced briefly peat deposits in SAKHALIN island of eastern SIBERIA continent. Peat industry was promoted as leading resources for development in this island by national control economic plan of central government before CIS. But development of deposit was left suspension of operation due to investment now. In southern area, about 10km from Yuzunosakhalinsk, two deposits of peat field were explored. One of them (Troisk) was suspended at begining stage of peat harvest from 300ha field and the other(Missilop) was producing the compact peat through drying and pulverizing from 350ha peat field which showed long run harvest activities. There are plenty of peat deposits near the Polonai Reika (river) in the central area of this island, At Zbaikaritz, 40km nothern area from Polonaisk, 135ha of peat field was developed. This field was left without working but established field preparation and could be able to be harvested any time if machines and utlities were settled. At southern suburb 10km from Polonaisk, about 40ha field of virgin deposit has been established planning for development. The plan involved estimated amount of peat, deposit depth, water level, drainage and leading road. The most of peat deposits accumulated from sphagnum moss. Texture is coarse but it contains more than 95% of organic carbon near to 0.5% of total nitrogen and acidity showed pH4-5.

Ex-situ conservation of the ornamental and medicinal orchid, Coelogyne stricta, was performed by mass propagation using seed culture. Propagation stages were optimized using full- and half-strength solidified MS medium with different phytohormones. Maximum seed germination (88 ± 0.5% over 6 weeks of culture) was achieved on half-strength MS medium supplemented with 15% coconut water. Maximum shoot numbers were found on full-strength MS medium supplemented with 1 mg/L BAP, 2 mg/L Kinetin, and 10% coconut water, while the longest root was developed on full-strength MS medium with 1.5 mg/L IBA. A 2:1:1 combination of coco-peat, pine bark, and sphagnum moss was found to be a suitable potting mixture resulting in 80% seedling survivability. The cytotoxic activity of extracts of both wild plants and in vitro-developed protocorms was determined using an MTT (3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay on a cervical cancer cell line. The wild plant extract inhibited the growth of 41.99% of cells, showing that this extract has moderate cytotoxic activity toward cervical cancer cells.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the final irrigation timing (FIT) before packaging for long-term transportation on growth, flowering, and crop quality of Phalaenopsis after simulated dark shipping (SDS). Phalaenopsis Sogo Yukidian 'V3' plants grown in 11 cm-diameter plastic pots filled with potting media (sphagnum moss + bark or only sphagnum moss) were packaged in paper boxes for export at 3.5, 7, 10 days (FIT 3.5, 7,10; Experiment 1) and 4, 6, 8, 10 days (FIT 4, 6, 8, 10; Experiment 2) after the final irrigation and then stored in a growth chamber at 20 ± 1℃ and 70 ± 3% RH created for SDS. After 4 weeks, the plants were taken out and grown in a greenhouse at 23 ± 3℃ and 70 ± 5% RH, and crop characteristics were measured during cultivation. In Experiment 1, the survival rate of FIT 3.5 plants was lower than that of FIT 7 and FIT 10. There was no difference between treatments in days to first flower, the number of florets, and the elongation rate of flower stalks. In Experiment 2, the percentage of rotted leaves was lowest in FIT 6 when before forcing and at 12 weeks after forcing, and that of FIT 8 was similar to FIT 6 when before forcing, but slightly increased after 12 weeks. The percentage of rotted leaves of FIT 10 was highest and that of FIT 4 was also high. There was little difference in flowering characteristics among treatments. In conclusion, the FIT before packaging for long-term (4 weeks) transportation of potted Phalaenopsis 'V3' affected the leaf rot rather than the post-shipping growth and flowering. And it was considered appropriate to set the volumetric water content of the potting media just before packaging to about 30%.
The Sclerotium blight was found on Phalaenopsis spp. at Dong-du-cheon city, and Hwa-seong city, Gyenggido, Korea in September 2009. The symptom included yellowing on lower leaves and wilt of a whole plant. Severely infected plants were blighted and died eventually. White mycelial mats appeared on the surface of basal stem and bulbs and the sclerotia were formed on stems, roots, and sphagnum moss. The sclerotia were spherical, 1-3 mm and white to brown. The optimum temperature for the growth and sclerotia formation was $25-30^{\circ}C$ on PDA. On the pathogenicity test, the first symptom appeared 5 days after inoculation and developed to severe stem rot and blight. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity, the causal fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report on the sclerotium blight on Phalaenopsis spp. caused by Sclerotium rolfsii in Korea.
The Sclerotium blight was found on Neofinetia falcata at Yong-in city, Gyenggi-do, Korea. The symptom occurred low leaves yellowish and wilt of a whole plant. Severely infected plants were blighted and dies eventually. White mycelial mats appeared on the surface of basal stem and bulbs and the sclerotia were formed on stems, roots, and sphagnum moss. The sclerotia were spherical in shape, 1~3 mm in size and white to brown in color. The optimum temperature for the growth and sclerotia formation was $25{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ on PDA. On the pathogenicity test, the first symptom was appeared 5 days after inoculation and development to severe stem rot and blight. The causal fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii and we suggested to call that the new Sclerotium blight on Neofinetia falcata caused by Sclerotium rolfsii in Korea.
To determine the use of waste materials as root zone soil mixtures for turfgrass culture, the effects of paper mill sludge and briquet ash on physical and chemical properties of soil and growth of turfgrasses were examined. Three turfgrass species of zoysiagrass(Zoysia japonicaSteud.). kentycky bluegrass(Poa pratensis L. 'Ram I') and creeping bentgrass(Agrostis panistris Huds 'Persucross') were cultured in 32cm diameter plastic pots containing various soil mixtures. The basic ingredients used for mixtures included sand(SD), field soil(SL), paper mill sludge(PS), sphagnum peat moss(PM) and briquet ash(BA). Seven combinations using these ingreients were mixed in different percentage by volume as follows: SD+SL+PM(80:10.10), SH+SL+PS(80:10:10), SD-PM(80:20), SD+PS (80:20), SD+BA(80:20), SD+BA+PM(60:20:20) and SD+BA+PS(60:20:20). 1. Paper mill sludge showed pH of 6.6, more than 30% of organic matter content, and higher concentrations of total N, P, k, Ca, Mg and CEC. Bulk density, fild moisture capacity and electrical conductivity of soil mixtures were increased by the comimation of 10~20% PS by volume. 2. Briquet ash showed pH of 8.0, and higher levels of P, k, Ca and Mg than those of field soiks. Bulk density, field moisture capacity and hardenss of soil mixtures were increased but vertical water flow rate and electrical conductivity were decreased by the combination of 20% BA by volume. 3. Phytotoxic effects of PS and BA on growth of turfgrasses were not found. Shoot growth of all three species was higher in soil combination of SD+BA+PS than that of SD+SL+PM added with fertilizer. However, root growth was better in soil mixtures combined with PM. Soil mixtureomposed of 60% SD, 20% BA and 20% PS by volume was most effective on growth of all three species. 4. Paper mill sludge resulted in higher N level in the leaf tissue. The contents of heavy metals such as Cd and Ph did not vary significantly among soil mixtures and species. However, the Mn level was 2~3 times higher in plants growh in mixtures containing PM compared with others, and especially it was higher in creeping bentgrass than other species.
The study was conducted to examine effective concentration and fertilization time of $CO_2$ for the growth of potted Phalaenopsis in growth chambers. Enrichment level of $CO_2$ was 1,000 or $2,000{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ and fertilization time was 06:00~12:00, 00:00~06:00, or 18:00~24:00. Two, seven, or twelve month-old clonal micropropagules of Phalaenopsis cultivars were cultured for 99 days. Leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, root length and fresh weight of all Phalaenopsis cultivars in $2,000{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$$CO_2$ were significantly greater than that of $1,000{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}\;CO_2$. $CO_2$ fertilization time was the greatest growth in 0:00~06:00.
