Batch adsorption experiments were performed to adsorb cadmium [Cd(II)], copper [Cu(II)], and lead [Pb(II)] onto sphagnum peat moss. According to the results, 10-50 mg/L of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) were effectively adsorbed and removed within 1 h by 1.0 g/L of sphagnum peat moss. The amounts of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) adsorbed on sphagnum peat moss increased with increasing the initial concentrations. The kinetics for the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) on sphagnum peat moss was described well using the pseudo-second order model at different initial concentrations. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated from the Langmuir isotherm for Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(III) were 33.90, 29.15, and 91.74 mg/g, respectively. Experimental results showed that sphagnum peat moss was a very effective adsorbent on the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II).
The effects of media, cell sizes and fertilizers on the early growth of Phalaenopsis plug plants were investigate. The sphagnum moss was more effective than other media in pink and white color cultivars. In comparison of different plug cell size, 50 cell size was more effective then 72 and 128 cell size in pink and white cultivar. In comparison of different fertilizer, margamf K in pink, and nutrient solution II(one time drenching with NHRI standard solution for three times irrigation) in white color cultivars was more effective then others, respectively.

Construction of an artificial wetland for the growth of Sphagnum palustre with emergent macrophytes (Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia, and Zizania latifolia) was firstly tried and the growth of those plant components according to various environmental combinations has been monitored for three years. Above-ground dry weight of Z. latifolia ($1,500g/m^2$) was higher than T. angustifolia ($900g/m^2$) and P. australis ($500g/m^2$) under most environmental conditions. In overall, planted emergent macrophytes seemed to prefer polishing sand without moss peat as a substrate and relatively deep water-depth condition (20cm) rather than shallow water-depth (5cm). Despite of high calcium content in inflow water (> 15ppm) into the constructed wetland, S. palustre populations have survived in most experimental plots during the monitoring period. Substrate layer including moss peat with high surface-area might play a role as an ion-filter. After three years, relatively thicker litter-layer in Z. latifolia plots due to vigorous growth appeared to heavily depress S. palustre by physical compressing and complete shading processes. Most of all, for the continuous growth of S. palustre, physio-chemical characteristics of water and substrate must be carefully managed. In addition, companion emergent species should be also cautiously selected not to depress S. palustre by much litter production. We suggest P. australis and T. angustifolia as companion species rather than Z. latifolia.
Cardot(1904) first reported 98 Korean mosses, which were collected from Busan, Gangwon Province, Mokpo, Seoul, Wonsan and Pyongyang by Father Faurie in 1901. Thirty-four of these species were new species to the world. However, eight of these species have been not listed to the moss checklist of Korea before this study. Thus, this study complies the literature including Korean mosses, and lists all the species there. As the result, the moss list of Korea is updated as including 775 taxa (728 species, 7 subspecies, 38 varieties, 2 forma) arranged into 56 families and 250 genera. This list include species that have been newly recorded since 1980. Brachythecium is the largest genus in Korea, and Fissidens, Sphagnum, Dicranum and Entodon are relatively large. Additionally, this study cites specimens collected from Jeju Island, Samcheok, Gangwon Province, and Socheong Island, and it is possible to confirm the distribution of 338 species in Korea.
Sphagnum palustre (SP), a species of moss belong to the Sphagnaceae family, is used as a dwarfed potted plant, in diapers, bandages, and soil additives. Although, SP can be found all over the world and is very cheap, the study of SP components and bioactivities are still at a rudimentary stage. In this study, the hot-water extract of SP (HWSP) and its subsequent organic solvent fractions were prepared, and their in-vitro anti-thrombosis activities were evaluated. The results showed that the water residue of HWSP has a strong anti-coagulation activity with significant extensions of thrombin time, and platelet aggregation activity. Our results suggest that the SP has the potential to be a novel resource for anti-thrombosis agents. This report provides the first evidence of the anti-thrombosis activity of SP.
This work is for selecting superior media which is similar to Peat Moss that is in general use as media of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii for Export such as 'Hwang wall' but lower price. The result on growth of 7 kinds of media (Peat Moss, BM6 Culture Medium, Coco Peat, Hydro Cray, Hydro Ball, Hugato, Vermiculite) which are applied watering (overhead irrigation, sub irrigation) based on bichemical analysis including chemical, physical analysis are following. The result of bi-chemical analysis shows that Coco Peat was stabilized planting after 90 days and Hydro Ball has high water holding capacity. The experimental result of growth in grafted cactus 'Hwangwall' shows Coco Peat is similar to Peat Moss on organic matter and in case of inorganic media, Hugato, Vermiculite, Hydro Cray made satisfactory results. But, the weight of inorganic media is too light to be tied. Consequently, Coco Peat and sphagnum moss as organic media has lower price and the condition of growth is analogous to Peat Moss. On the other hands, Hydro Ball was chosen as a substitute of Peat Moss in inorganic media.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of rootball media and covering materials for air-layering on the rooting and growth responses of miniature tree material. The experiment was performed with Carpinus coreana Nakai in the vinyl-house condition. The covering material, jute tape increased the diameter growth at 1cm above the girdling part of the tree material. The combined use of the soil mixture of peatmoss and perlite(2:1, by volume) as rootball medium and jute tape increased the dry weight of current year leaves and shoots. The number of shoot shorter than 10cm and that of leaves from the shoot were produced more by using a sphagnum moss for rootball medium than the soil mixture. The use of jute tape shortened the period required for rooting and increased the number of fine roots and the total root dry weight at girdling part of the tree material. On the other hand, the number of long roots was produced more by using the sphagnum moss than the soil mixture.
An exceptional case of inhabitation of a Sphagnum sp. was firstly confirmed at abandoned paddy terrace (APT) wetland in Ansan. Water sampling for analyzing of physicochemical conditions including nutrients such as NP, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ was performed and the vegetation map for distribution of Sphagnum sp., topographical map, and flora list for companion species were made at field in June 2011. From the results, the Sphagnum sp. in the study site was identified as S. palustre and it covered about 8% of the wetland cover of 3,200 $m^2$. Most distributions of S. palustre were observed at tussock structures as micro-topography by sedges and grasses within a wetland (74%) and the shaded slope area under Pinus densiflora's canopy in wetland boundary (26%). Despite that APT in Ansan is relatively lower wetland in altitude than high moors, the contents of calcium ($0.45{\pm}0.2$) and magnesium ($1.48{\pm}0.6$) ion which are critical limiting factors for Sphagnum spp. were very low levels as well as NP ($PO_4$-P, $0.02{\pm}0.0$; $NO_3$-N, $0.25{\pm}0.3$; $NH_4$-N, $0.06{\pm}0.1$) and it could enable the inhabitation of S. palustre in lower APT.
Peat humin(p-Humin), humic acid(p-HA) and fulvic acid(p-FA) were isolated from Canadian Sphagnum peat moss by dissolution in 0.1M NaOH followed by acid precipitation. After purification cycles, they are characterized for their elemental compositions and, acid/base properties. Functionalities and carbon structures of the humic fractions were also characterized using FT-IR and solid state $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy. Those results are compared with one another and with soil humic substances from literatures. Main purpose of this study was to present a chemical and spectroscopic characterization data of humic substance from peat moss needed to evaluate its environmental applicability. The relative proportions of the p-Humin, p-HA and p-FA in the peat moss was $76\%,\;18\%,\;and\;3\%$, respectively, based on the total organic matter content ($957{\pm}32\;g/kg$). Elemental composition of p-Humin were found to be $C_{1.00}H_{1.52}O_{0.79}N_{0.01}$ and had higher H/C and (N+O)/C ratio compared to those of p-HA($C_{1.00}H_{1.09}O_{0.51}N_{0.02}$) and p-FA($C_{1.00}H_{1.08}O_{0.65}N_{0.01}$). Based on the analysis of pH titration data, there are two different types of acidic functional groups in the peat moss and its humic fractions and their proton exchange capacities(PEC, meq/g) were in the order p-FA(4.91) >p-HA(4.09) >p-Humin(2.38). IR spectroscopic results showed that the functionalities of the peat moss humic molecules are similar to those of soil humic substances, and carboxylic acid(-COOH) is main function group providing metal binding sites for Cd(II) sorption. Spectral features obtained from $^{13}C$-NMR indicated that peat moss humic molecules have rather lower degree of humification, and that important structural differences exist between p-Humin and soluble humic fractions(p-HA and p-FA).
To reveal conservation value of Sowhangbyungsan-neup among wetlands in Mt. Odae designated as a Ramsar convention site in 2008, ecological characteristics were investigated. The maximum depth of sediment was 86cm and average at central part was 56cm. Average pH of water was 5.8 and this indicates that this wetland has the characteristics between bog and fen. Average electron conductivity was $11{\mu}S$/cm, which is the lowest among Korean wetlands. Nutrient status was oligotrophic based on contents of cation, nitrate, ammonia, soluble reactive phosphorus in water. Out-flow of water was related with the 3 day cumulative precipitation. Soil texture was loam and nutrient level was very low. Vascular plants of 45 family, 95 genus, 121 species, 2 subspecies, 16 variety, 4 forma, total 121 taxa were recorded. Main plant communities on Sphagnum base were Osmunda cinnamomea community, Carex dispalata community and Carex curta community. The results indicated that this wetland has very different ecological characteristics than others in Korea and deserves conservation value well. Also, this study revealed that there is no evident threatening factor and this wetland will have characteristics of fen continuously in near future.
