A conceptual design study for a pyroprocesing facility, has been carried out in this study, which is available for the recovery of uranium and transuranic elemental group(TRU), that is, reusable as a nuclear fuel especially in a next generation-type reactor. The scale of this facility has been chosen as 20 kg HM/batch, comparatively small engineering size in order to collect scale-up data for the design of a commercial facility as well as to get operational experience. The spent fuel to be handled in this process is as follows : 3.5 % enriched uranium fuel, 35,000MWd/tU and 5-year cooled. The major items considered in the conceptual study are a building lay-out including various hot cells, safety management of the process operation in conjunction with material balance control, radiation safety, inert atmosphere control in shielded hot cells, and criticality control of uranium and TRU products.

The SIMFUEL which composition is similar to PWR nuclear spent fuels was dissolved with a acid digestion bomb. An analytical conditions of ICP-AES for the direct determination of molybdenum in the uranium matrices without separation process were investigated. Based on the effect of uranium on molybdenum intensity. the most optimum wavelengths of molybdenum were found to be 202.030 and 203.844 nm. However, the method of standard additions is applied to overcome the effects of changing background caused by analyzing the sample solutions containing high concentration of uranium and the standard calibration solutions. The relative error of two methods, direct and indirect measurements with cation exchange resin separation procedures, was less than 5%. Therefore it was possible for this procedure to directly measure molybdenum in uranium matrices without separation. And this method was also applied to the determination of several percent of molybdenum in a U-Mo alloy.

Nuclear power is currently the second largest power supply method in Korea and the number of nuclear power plants are planned to be increased as well. However, clear management policy for spent fuels generated from nuclear power plants has not yet been established. The back-end fuel cycle, associated with nuclear material flow after nuclear reactors is a collection of technologies designed for the spent fuel management and the spent fuel management policy is closely related with the selection of a nuclear fuel cycle. Cost is an important consideration in selection of a nuclear fuel cycle and should be determined by adding external cost to private cost. Unlike the private cost, which is a direct cost, studies on the external cost are focused on nuclear reactors and not at the nuclear fuel cycle. In this research, external cost indicators applicable to nuclear fuel cycle were derived and quantified. OT (once through), DUPIC (Direct Use of PWR SF in CANDU), PWR-MOX (PWR PUREX reprocessing), and Pyro-SFR (SFR recycling with pyroprocessing) were selected as nuclear fuel cycles which could be considered for estimating external cost in Korea. Energy supply security cost, accident risk cost, and acceptance cost were defined as external cost according to precedent and estimated after analyzing approaches which have been adopted for estimating external costs on nuclear power generation.

KDC-1 canister for PWR spent fuels which will be used for the Korean Reference Disposal System was developed. The structural analysis of the canister was carried out as a part of the safety analysis. Two conditions, disposal condition and handling condition, were considered for the structural analysis. Three kinds of load cases, normal, abnormal and rock movement, were considered for the disposal condition. The results of the calculation showed that the safety factors from the structural analysis were greater than the design requirements. Two accident scenarios, gripper failure accident and canister drop accident, were analyzed for the handling condition. According to the gripper failure scenario analysis, the handling machine with grippers could be used even in the cases that one or two grippers failed. The maximum von Mises stress from the canister drop accident scenario was 0.762 MPa, which was negligible compared with the yield stress of nodular cast iron. The proposed KDC-1 canister for PWR spent fuels proves to be safe under the repository condition that is based upon the Korean reference disposal system according to the structural analysis for disposal condition and handling condition.

An advanced spent fuel conditioning process (ACP) is developing for the safe and effective management of spent fuels which arising from the domestic nuclear power plants. And its demonstration facility is under design. This facility will be prepared by modifying IMEF's reserve hot cell facility which reserved for future usage by considering the characteristics of ACP. This study presents a basic structural architecture design and analysis results of ACP hot cell including modification of the IMEF. The results of this study will be used for the detail design of ACP demonstration facility, and utilized as basic data for the licensing of the ACP facility.
Cation exchange separation and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometric(ICP-AES) determination of ruthenium in HCl solutions were studied to quantitatively determine ruthenium in spent nuclear fuels. Ruthenium-bearing samples were dissolved with the mixed acid solution(9 : 1 mole ratio, HCl-HNO$_3$) using an acid digestion bomb. Based on the absorption spectra and ion exchange behaviour of ruthenium in hydrochloric acid media, its possible chemical species were discussed. On a cation exchange column (0.7 ${\times}$ 8.0 cm) packed with AG 50W ${\times}$ 8(100~200 mesh) and equilibrated with 0.5 M HCl, ruthenium was eluated with 0.5 M HCl while uranium was retained on the column. The established separation method was applied to a simulated spent nuclear fuel and resulted in the recovery of 98.5% with a relative standard deviation of 0.7%.

Academic interests in ionic liquid (IL) technologies have been extended to the nuclear industry and the applicability of ionic liquids for processing radioactive materials have been investigated by many researchers. A number of studies have reported interesting results with respect to the spectroscopic and electrochemical behaviors of metal elements included in spent nuclear fuels. The measured and observed properties of metal ions in TBP(tri-butyl phosphate) dissolved ILs have led the development of alternative technologies to traditional aqueous processes. On the other hand, the electrochemical deposition of metal ions in ILs have been investigated for the application of the solvents to aqueous as well as to non-aqueous processes. In this work, a review on the application of ILs in nuclear fuel cycle is presented for the purpose of categorizing and summarizing the notable researches on ILs.

A CASMO/ORIGEN coupling utility program was developed to predict the composition of all the fission products in spent PWR fuels. The coupling program reads the CASMO output file, modifies the ORIGEN cross section library and reconstructs the ORIGEN input file at each depletion step. In ORIGEN, the burnup equation is solved for actinides and fission products based on the fission reaction rates and depletion flux of CASMO. A sample calculation has been performed using a 14$\times$14 PWR fuel assembly and the results are given in this paper.
The design, construction, and operation of a light water reactor (LWR) are subject to compliance with safety criteria specified for accident situations, such as loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) and reactivity-initiated accident (RIA). Because reactor fuel is the primary source of radioactivity and heat generation, such a criterion is established on the basis of the characteristics and performance of fuel under the specific accident condition. As such, fuel behavior under accident situations impact many aspects of fuel design and power generation, and in an indirect manner, even spent fuel storage and management. This paper provides a comprehensive review of: the history of the current LOCA criteria, results of LOCA-related investigations on conventional and new classes of fuel, and status of on-going studies on high-burnup fuel under LOCA situations. The objective of the paper is to provide a better understanding of important issues and an insight helpful to establish new LOCA criteria for modem LWR fuels.

Since the April of 1978, Korea has strongly relied on the nuclear energy for electricity generation. As of today, eighteen nuclear power plants are in operation and ten are to be inaugurated by 2015. The installed nuclear capacity is 15, 716 MW as of the end of 2002, representing 29.3% of the nation's total installed capacity. The nuclear share in electricity remains around 38.9 at the end of 2002, reaching at the level of 119 billion kWh's. New power reactors, KSNP's (Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant) are fully based on the domestic technologies. More advanced reactors such as KNGR (Korea Next Generation Reactor) will be commercialized soon. Even though the front end nuclear cycle enjoys one of the best positions in the world, there have been some chronical problems in the back end fuel cycle. That's the one of the reason why we need more active R&D programs in Korea and active international and regional cooperation in this area. The everlasting NIMBY problem hinders the implementation of the nation's radioactive waste management program. We expect that the storage capacity for the LILW(Low and Intermediate Level radioactive Waste) will be dried out soon. The situation for the spent fuel storage is also not so favorable too. The storage pools for spent fuel are being filled rapidly so that in 2008, some AR pools cannot accommodate any more new spent nuclear fuels. The Korean Government in strong association with utilities and national academic and R&D institutes have tried its best effort to secure the site for a LILW repository and a AFR site. Finally, one local community, Buan in Jeonbook Province, submitted the petition for the site. At the end of the last July, the Government announced that the Wido, a small island in Buan, is suitable for the national complex site. The special force team headed by Dr IS Chang, president of KAERI teamed with Government officials and many prominent scholars and journalists agreed that by the evidences from the preliminary site investigation, they could not find any reason for rejecting the local community's offer.
