House-plant placement for indoor air purification and health benefits on asthmatics

  • Objectives Some plants were placed in indoor locations frequented by asthmatics in order to evaluate the quality of indoor air and examine the health benefits to asthmatics. Methods The present study classified the participants into two groups: households of continuation and households of withdrawal by a quasi-experimental design. The households of continuation spent the two observation terms with indoor plants, whereas the households of withdrawal passed the former observation terms with indoor plants and went through the latter observation term without any indoor plants. Results The household of continuation showed a continual decrease in the indoor concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during the entire observation period, but the household of withdrawal performed an increase in the indoor concentrations of VOCs, except formaldehyde and toluene during the latter observation term after the decrease during the former observation term. Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) increased in the households of continuation with the value of 13.9 L/min in the morning and 20.6 L/min in the evening, but decreased in the households of withdrawal with the value of -24.7 L/min in the morning and -30.2 L/min in the evening in the first experimental season. All of the households exhibited a decrease in the value of PEFR in the second experimental season. Conclusions Limitations to the generalizability of findings regarding the presence of plants indoors can be seen as a more general expression of such a benefit of human-environment relations.

열가수분해 및 수증기증류에 의한 우라늄 화합물 중 염소 분리 및 이온크로마토그래피 정량 (Separation of chlorine in a uranium compound by pyrohydrolysis and steam distillation, and its determination by ion chromatography)

  • 우라늄 화합물 중에 함유된 염소를 정량하기 위하여 수증기증류 및 열가수분해를 이용한 량 염소의 분리 및 정량법을 개발하였다. 수증기 증류에 의한 시료 중의 염소를 분리하기 위하여 수증기 발생장치, 증류플라스크 및 냉각기 등으로 구성된 장치를 제작 설치하였다. LiCl 표준용액과 모의사용후핵 연료 일정량을 혼합하여 만든 우라늄 화합물 시료 중의 염소를 분리하기 위하여 혼산(0.2 M ferrous ammonium sulfate-0.5M sulfamic acid 3 mL + phosphoric acid 6 mL + sulfuric acid 15 mL)을 이용하여 $140^{\circ}C$로 증류시키고 $90{\pm}5\;mL$를 수집하였다. 열가수분해에 의한 시료 중의 염소를 분리하기 위하여 공기공급장치, 온수공급장치, 석영반응관, 연소로 및 연소보트, 그리고 휘발 염소 흡수장치로 구성된 열가수분해장치를 제작 설치하였다. 일정량의 우라늄 화합물 시료에 반응촉진제($U_3O_8$)를 가하고 1 mL/min의 공기유속과 $80^{\circ}C$의 공급수 온도를 유지하고 $950^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 반응시켜 시료 중의 염소를 분리하였다. 두 방법에 의하여 수집된 각 흡수용액은 일정부피로 희석하고 이온크로마토그래피로 정량하여 회수율을 측정하였다. 금속전환체 잔류 용융염 중의 미량 염소를 이온크로마토그래피로 정량하기 위하여 시료를 공기 및 건조 산화시키고 분쇄한 후 열가수분해하여 염소를 회수하였다.

폐전기차 셀분말의 열처리 조건에 따른 선택적 리튬침출 연구 (Study on Selective Lithium Leaching Effect on Roasting Conditions of the Waste Electric Vehicle Cell Powder)

  • 최근, 전기차 증가에 따른 리튬 전지의 사용량 증가로 리튬 가격 증가 및 폐리튬전지 발생량이 증가하고 있다. 이러한 이유로 폐리튬전지 내 리튬 회수에 대한 연구가 진행되고있다. 본 연구에서는 폐전기차 셀분말의 열처리 조건에 따른 선택적 리튬 침출에 관한 연구를 진행하였다. 셀 분말(LiNixCoyMnzO2, LiCoO2)로부터 선택적 리튬 침출을 위해서는 환원을 통한 상변화 및 분리가 필요하다. 폐전기차 셀분말 내 탄소는 고온에서 산소와 반응하여 환원제 역할을 한다. 적정 온도를 알고자 대기/질소 분위기에서 TG-DSC 분석 및 550 ~ 850 ℃ 열처리 후, XRD 분석을 하였다. 열처리 된 분말은 ICP 분석을 위해 D.I water에서 1:10 비율로 침출 후 분석하였다. XRD 분석결과, 700 ℃에서 Li2CO3 피크가 확인되었다. 850 ℃ 열처리 시 Li2O의 피크가 확인되었는데, 이는 Li2CO3가 723 ℃ 이상의 온도에서 Li2O와 CO2로 분해되었기 때문이다. 또한 Li2O와 Al2O3와 반응으로 LiAlO2가 확인되었다. 850 ℃에서 열처리 시 Li 침출율이 낮아졌는데 이는 LiAlO2가 D.I water에서 침출하지 않기 때문으로 판단된다. 리튬 침출율의 경우 열처리의 조건에 따라 달라지며, 질소 분위기 중 700 ℃로 열처리 시 약 45 %의 리튬침출이 확인되었다. 침출 용액을 고-액분리 후증발농축하여 XRD 분석을 실시한 결과, Li2CO3의 피크를 확인하였다.

양송이의 균사생장(菌絲生長) 및 자실체(子寶體) 수량(收量)에 미치는 복토재료(覆土材料)의 이화학적(理化學的) 성질(性質)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Studies on the Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Different Casing Materials Affecting Mycelial Growth and Yield of Cultivated Mushroom, Agaricus bisporus (Lange) Sing.)

  • Since the importance of casing in fruit body formation of Agaricus bisporus has been emphasized, physico-chemical characteristics of casing materials were discussed by many workers and a mixture of peat and mineral soil as proper casing material has been adopted in many of mushroom growing countries. Because of limited resources of peat in Korea, it is necessary to find practical performance and substitutional materials for casing. The effect of casing on mycelial growth and mushroom yield of A. bisporus varied with materials, its combination and practices etc. The experiments to be discussed in this paper are concerned with pH and Ca of casing material which influence A bisporus, and changes of physico-chemical characteristics with mixing ratio of casing materials and its effect on A. bisporus. The optimum range of moisture content of each material, management of watering and application of physico-chemical characteristics casing materials was also investigated and re-use of weathered spent compost for casing material was described. 1. The effect of calcium on mycelial growth of A. bisporus at various pH in Halbschalentest showed different results with calcium sources. Best results were obtained around neutrality and fresh weight of fruit bodies grown in the range of pH 7 to 8 was highest among the tested levels. 2. Available moisture, pore space, organic matter, cation exchangeable capacity and exchangeable cation was increased by an increase of mixing ratio of peat in casing materials, while an adverse effect was obtained by addition of sand. 3. Mycelial growth on clay loam was more rapid at a lower bulk density of 0.75g/cc and at 20% moisture content on a dry weight basis at the same bulk density. 4. Mixing ratio of casing materials, 60 to 80 per cent by volume of peat mixed with 20 to 40 per cent of clay loam produced the highest yield of fresh fruit bodies and sand the lowest. However, per cent of open cap was highest in peat and lowest in sand. 5. Days required for fruit body initiation was shortened in mixtures of peat and clay loam by one to three days compared with other materials and the formation of flushes was clear. 6. The effect of some physico-chemical characteristics of casing materials on the fresh weight of fruit bodies were estimated by a multiple regression equation; Y=-923.86+$8.18X_1+8.04X_2+7.90X_3+0.12X_4+2.03X_5-0.82X_6-0.54X_7$ where $X_1,X_2,X_3,X_4,X_5,X_6,X_7$ are sand, silt, clay, available moistuer, porosity, organic matter and exchangeable cation respectively. The productivity of certain casing material could be predicted from this equation. 7. Fresh weight of fruit bodies was positively correlated with porosity exchangeable cation, organic matter, available moisture, silt and clay of materials; while sand was negatively correlated. On the contrary, sand was the unique factor reducing per cent of open cap. 8. Distribution of three phases of high productive casing material was concentrated in the range of 10 to 30 per cent solids, 15 to 30 per cent liquids, and 50 to 60 per cent in air volume. 9. Fresh weight of fruit bodies from peat was not affected with heavy watering but in clay loam and sandy loam severe crop losses occurred. Fresh weight of individual fruit was increased and open caps were decreased with heavy watering but light watering resulted in adverse effects: its effect was especially great in peat. 10. Optimum range of moisture content by weight on a dry basis was different with each casing material. To maintain optimum moisture content concerned with yield of fruit bodies and open cap, sandy loam and peat mixtures required daily watering of 0.6, 0.6 to 1. 2 and 1.2 to 2.4 liters per $3.3m^2$ of bed area, respectively. 11. Maximum yield of fruit body was recorded in the range of pF 2. 0 to 2. 5 of casing materials if organic matter content was below 4.2 per cent and in pF 1. 3 to 1.8 if above 7.1%. 12. pF curve of a certain casing material could be draws from moisture content at various pF values by multiple regression equations provided texture, organic matter and calcium of the casing material are given. Optimum moisture range of the casing materials also could be estimated by the equation. 13. It was possible to improve the phyico-chemical characteristics of clay loam and sandy loam by addition of weathered spent compost although the effect was less than in the case of peat. Fresh weight of fruit bodies wsa increased by addition of weathered spent compost but its effect was not as remarkable as peat. Accordingly, further studies will be required.

Defect Length Measurement using Underwater Camera and A Laser Slit Beam

  • A method of measuring the length of defects on the wall of the spent nuclear fuel pool using the image processing and a laser slit beam is proposed. Since the defect monitoring camera is suspended by a crane and hinged to the crane hook, the camera viewing direction can not be adjusted to the orientation that is exactly perpendicular to the wall. Thus, the image taken by the camera, which is horizontally rotated along the axis of the camera supporting beam, is distorted and thus, the precise length can not be measured. In this paper, by using the LASER slit beam generator, the horizontally rotated angle of the camera is estimated. Once the angle is obtained, the distorted image can be easily reconstructed to the image normal to the wall. The estimation algorithm adopts a 3-dimensional coordinate transformation of the image plane where both the laser slit beam and the original image of the defects exist. The estimation equation is obtained by using the information of the beam projected on the wall and the parameters of this equation are experimentally obtained. With this algorithm, the original image of the defect taken at arbitrary rotated angle can be reconstructed to an image normal to the wall. From the result of a series of experiments, the accuracy of the defect is measured within 0.6 and 1.3 % error bound of real defect size in the air and underwater, respectively under 30 degree of the inclined angle of the laser slit beam generator. Also, the error increases as the inclined angle increases upto 60 degree. Over this angle, the defect length can not be measured since the defect image disappears. The proposed algorithm enables the accurate measurement of the defect length only by using a single camera and a laser slit beam.

폐니켈수소전지에서 회수된 희토류복합 침전분말로부터 세륨 회수에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Separation of Cerium from Rare Earth Precipitates Recovered from Waste NiMH Battery)

  • 폐니켈수소전지에 함유되어 있는 세륨을 회수하기 위하여 침출 및 침전을 통해 회수한 희토류복합 침전분말을 수산화나트륨(NaOH) 수용액에 반응온도 70 ℃ 및 반응시간 4시간의 조건에서 이온치환반응을 통하여 희토류 수산화물로 변환시켰다. 이후 희토류 수산화물은 반응온도 80 ℃에서 반응시간 4시간의 조건에서 공기를 주입하며 산화반응을 통해 세륨을 Ce3+에서 Ce4+로 전환시켰다. 세륨의 산화율은 XPS 분석을 통해 약 25 %로 확인하였으며, 산화반응이 완료된 분말은 묽은 황산에 대한 용해도 차이를 이용하여 세륨과 나머지 희토류를 분리하였다. 최종적으로 회수된 분말은 XRD 분석을 통해 수산화세륨(Ce(OH)4)의 결정상을 확인하였으며, 이때 세륨의 순도는 약 94.6 %, 회수율은 97.3 %를 나타내었다.

사물인터넷 기반 실내 환경 모니터링 및 자동제어 시스템 구현 (Implementation of Indoor Environment Monitoring and Automatic Control System based on Internet of Things)

  • 생활수준이 점차 높아짐에 따라 환경문제에 대한 국민들의 관심과 인식 수준도 증가하였다. 최근 들어 실내 활동시간이 증가함에 따라 환경에 대한 인식과 개선에 대한 방안이 요구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 IoT 기반 기술을 이용하여 실시간으로 실내 환경에 대한 모니터링을 통해 환경정보를 수집하고 연동된 제어장치를 이용하여 실내 환경을 적정수준으로 유지하고 개선하는 시스템을 설계하고 개발하였다. 이는 기존의 수동적인 실내 환경개선 행위나 대규모 설비를 대신하여 가정이나 소규모 장소에서도 자동적인 실내 환경개선 시스템을 제공한다. 본 시스템은 공기 질과 CO2, 온도와 습도, 소음과 조도에 따른 상태분석과 함께 상대적 기준치를 적용하여 9가지의 상태에 따른 제어신호를 자동제어 모듈로 전송하여 실내 환경을 개선한다.

  • 전지는 공기아연리튬망간산화은나트륨-유황납축니켈-수소 이차니켈-카드뮴리튬이온알칼라인 전지 등의 여러 종류가 있다. 경제적, 효율적 관점에서 폐전지의 재활용 기술은 폭넓게 연구되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 폐전지의 재활용 기술에 대한 특허와 논문을 분석하였다. 분석범위는 1972년~2011년까지의 미국, EU, 일본, 한국의 등록/개된 특허와 SCI 논문으로 제한하였다. 특허와 논문은 키워드를 사용하여 수집하였고, 기술의 정의에 의해 필터링하였다. 특허와 논문의 동향은 연도, 국가, 기업, 기술에 따라 분석하여 나타내었다.

충돌제트의 경사각도가 파형 구조의 열유동 특성에 미치는 영향 (Oblique Angle Effect of Impinging Jet on Heat Flow Characteristics of a Corrugated Structure)

  • 파형 구조는 배열 충돌제트 하류에서의 횡방향 유동 영향을 줄이기 위해 충돌제트 사이의 파형 속에 사용된 냉각 공기를 유입시키며, 이러한 파형 구조에서의 유동 및 열전달 특성에 대해 수치해석을 수행하였다. 모든 계산은 3차원, 정상상태, 비압축성 유동으로 고려하였으며 ANSYS-CFX 15.0 코드를 사용하였다. 제트 홀에서 평균 Reynolds 수는 10,000이며, Spanwise 단면에서 충돌제트의 경사각도는 $70^{\circ}$, $80^{\circ}$$90^{\circ}$ 이고, Streamwise 단면에서 충돌제트의 경사각도는 $70^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$$110^{\circ}$ 이다. 본 연구에서는 배열 충돌제트의 경사각도가 파형 구조의 유동 및 열전달 특성에 미치는 영향에 대해 고찰하였다.

There's No Such Thing as Free Lunch but Envy among Young Facebookers

  • Facebook has quickly infused across cultures worldwide to become a common household term for diverse spectra of netizens, especially youngsters. Inherently, interactive in nature, Facebook provides a common cyber enabled platform for online interactions with social friends, living across the world. However, despite its merits, users also experience certain disadvantages, which include but are not limited to rise in feelings of social comparison, decline in self-esteem, contentment and general subjective well-being. This work aims to determine the role of Facebook in spreading envy and identify factors that trigger such emotions. Due to abductive nature of the study, we used pilot interviews and consulted relevant literature to formulate hypotheses. Further, we used deductive approach and conducted a survey. The results showed that frequent use of Facebook, particularly passive following is main predictor of envy, and social interaction is the biggest cause for development of envious feelings in Facebook users. However, insignificant variation was found while investigating relationship between envy and factors, such as pretentiousness, time spent, accomplishment, everything in life, likes on posts, popularity across genders, marital status and genre.
