  • CD-ROM Drives Rotating high speed as 10000 rpm cause serious noise and vibration problems. At the high speed, dominant noise is Air Borne Noise produced from high-speed airflow and Structure Borne Noise produced from structural vibration. In this research, vibration and sound characteristics in CD-ROM Drive were studied by the use of experimental analysis and computational simulation. Sound intensity techniques and ODS(Operational Deflection Shape) techniques are applied to identify the acoustic noise source of CD-ROM drive. And Computational simulation using SYSNOISE is conducted for describing the noise behavior.

  • The sidewall of the HEMU-400x consists of two parts. One is the multi-layered structure including aluminium extruded panel and the other is the double glazed window. When the train runs in a tunnel, the equivalent sound insulation performance of the side wall significantly influences the internal noise levels. In aspect of the sound insulation strategy, it is important to make two parts have similar performance. In this study, the intensity sound transmission loss (ITL) is measured on the specimens of the two parts. Mass law deviation (MLD) is considered in order to compare the sound insulation performance of the two parts in respect of the weight. Contribution of each part to the sound insulation is analyzed and the sound insulation strategy is investigated to reduce the interior noise.

  • The trends of recent passenger ships are becoming speedy and luxury style to enhance comfortableness in cabin. In order to meet these trend, ship designer has to improve the sound quality as well as to reduce the sound pressure level in cabins. In this paper, the trend of noise and sound quality of real high-speed coastal passenger ships are measured and analyzed, while running on their regular courses. The sound quality parameters such as loudness, roughness, fluctuation strength, and sharpness are evaluated by Zwicker loudness calculation. In addition, we try to find sensitive critical frequency band for the improving sound quality by using signal editing. Finally, the expected effective design methods are proposed to designer for the improving sound quality of passenger ships.

  • Sound quality is becoming the major concern in passenger vehicle. The study on it has been done recently but it is not good enough. In order to improve the sound quality in passenger vehicle, so many noise sources must be considered and human feeling to the noise also be taken into account. In this paper, the sound quality was analyzed by vehicle road test which was carried out with varying the traveling speed. As basic factors for sound quality, only objective factors are considered such as loudness, sharpness, speech intelligibility, sound pressure level ... etc. The relations between sound pressure level and other factors are discussed from a point of view of traveling speed dependency. The frequency dependency of sound quality factor is also analyzed by frequency analysis.

  • In the development of electricity generating wind turbines for wind farm application, only two types have survived as the methods of power regulation; stall regulation and fun span pitch control. The sound measurement procedures of IEC 61400-11 are applied to field test and evaluation of noise emission from each of 1.5 MW and 660 kW wind turbine generators (WTG) utilizing the stall regulation and the pitch control for the power regulation, respectively. Apparent sound power level, wind speed dependence and third-octave band levels are evaluated for both of WTGs. It is found that while 1.5 MW WTG using the stall control is found to emit lower sound power than 660 kW one using the pitch control at low wind speed (below 8 m/s), sound power from the former becomes greater than that of the latter in the higher wind speed. Equivalent continuous sound pressure levels (ECSPL) of the stall control type of WTG vary more widely with wind speed than those of the pitch control type of WTG These characteristics are believed to be strongly dependent on the basic difference of the airflow around the blade between the stall regulation and the pitch control types of WTG. These characteristics according to the methods of power regulation lead to the very different noise emission characteristics of WTG depending on the seasons because the average wind speed in summer is lower than the critical velocity over which the airflow on the suction side of blade in the stall types of WT are separated. These results propose that, in view of environmental noise regulation, the developer of wind farm should give enough considerations to the choice of power regulation of their WTG based on the weather conditions of potential wind farm locations.

  • Temporal and spatial variations of sea water largely affect on the pattern of underwater sound propagation. Acoustic environmental changes and their effects on underwater sound propagation in the northern part of the East Sea, which have been poorly studied mainly due to lack of observations, are investigated by analyzing the hydrographic data acquired since 1993. Severe changes in acoustic environments are associated with various physical processes such as deep convection, thermal fronts, and eddies in the northern part of the East Sea. Spatio-temporal variations of sound speed field and the layer of the maximum sound speed are categorized into six typical cases. Using a sound source of 5 kHz, acoustic transmission losses are calculated range-independently for the six typical cases. Significant differences among the patterns of transmission loss in the six cases suggest that a different tactics are required when we operate in the northern part of the East Sea.

  • This study is about predicting the interior pressure level of the korean high speed train using ray acoustic method. The motor car and the motor and passenger cabin are investigated under the environment of passing open countryside and inside tunnel of 350 km/hr. Calculated sound levels are compared with the proposed sound levels and suggestions about the transmission Joss values of isolating panels inside motor car and the guide lines of allowed sound power limit of motor equipments are provided. Results of TPI car show calculated interior sound level is below the proposed values for both cases of open countryside running and inside tunnel. Since ray acoustic method calculated only air borne noise component, real sound level of the motor car may be higher than prediction. Passenger cabins of TMI, TM5 show higher sound level than the proposed values, so window method was carried out to find the contribution of each panel components and point out the remedy of transmission path. Reduction of sound power of motor equipments should be condisered at the same time.

  • Noise generated from wind turbines has been predicted by numerical methods. Sound pressure level(SPL) on the turbines is predicted after aerodynamic analysis is carried out by Wind Turbine Flow, Aeroacoustics and Structure analysis (WINFAS) code. The level of each panel of acoustic sphere is determined by the sum of tonal, turbulence ingestion and airfoil self noise. With the noise source database, the acoustic sphere, SPL on the ground is calculated using the model based on acoustic ray theory. The model has been designed to consider the effects on the condition of terrain and atmosphere. The variations of SPL on the ground occur not only because of the different source level but also because of the nonuniform distributions of the sound speed along the height. Hence, the profile of an effective sound speed which is the sum of the contribution of sound speed to a temperature gradient and a wind speed variation is used by the theory based on atmospheric stability. With the integrated numerical method, the prediction of sound propagation on the wind farm is carried out with the states of the atmospheric stability.

  • The accurate prediction of aeroacoustic analysis is necessary for designers to control and reduce airflow-induced sound pressure levels in high speed rotating DVD drives. This paper focuses on the numerical prediction of airflow-induced sound in DVD drives. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is first conducted to evaluate flow field characteristics due to the high-speed disk rotation, and to support the acoustic analysis. The acoustic analogy based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings(FW-H) equation is adopted to predict aeroacoustic noise patterns. The integral solution for quadrupole volume source is included to identify the turbulence noise generated inside the DVD tray. The strength of sound pressure level with respect to rotating speed is discussed to meet upfront demand on the high fidelity product development. The present study also focuses on the noise directivity and examines how much the sound noise is sensitive to change in rotating speed. Near-field noise is strongly affected by the flow field characteristic, which is caused by the complex shape of the tray. For a mid-field, the quadrupole noise play as a counterpart of thickness noise or loading noise, so it generates different sound noise patterns compared with those in the near field.
