  • This research conducted milling tests to study effects of cutting environment conditions of ball end mills on the characteristics of hard milling process. KP4 steels and STD11 heat treated steels were used as the workpiece and WC-Co ball end mill tools with TiAIN coated were utilized in the cutting tests. Dry cutting without coolant and semi-dry cutting using botanical oil coolant were conducted and MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubricant) device was used to spray coolant. Cutting forces, tool wear and surface roughness were measured in the cutting tests. Results showed that dry cutting of KP4 and hardened STD11 specimens produced better surface quality and wear performance than MQL spray cutting did.

  • The present paper is a contribution in characterising end milling process of AISI 52100 ball bearing steel through statistical analyses of variance (ANOVA). The latter has been performed to identify the effect of the cutting parameters on the machined surface roughness and the cutting tool life. Wear measurements have been carried on multilayer coated carbide inserts and the respective surface roughness has been recorded. Taguchi's technique has been adapted to conduct the design experiments in terms of orthogonal arrays according to the cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut), the type of coating (TiN, TiCN, TiAlN) and lubricating condition. Regression analyses have conducted to the development of simplified empirical models that can be effectively used to predict surface roughness and tool wear in the present milling process.

  • In this study, response surface method (RSM) was used in modeling and multi-objective optimization of the parameters of AA5052-H32 in incremental sheet forming (ISF). The goals of optimization were the maximum forming angle, minimum thickness reduction, and minimum surface roughness, with varying values in response to changes in production process parameters, such as tool diameter, tool spindle speed, step depth, and tool feed rate. A Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) was used to develop an RSM model for modeling the variations in the forming angle, thickness reduction, and surface roughness in response to variations in process parameters. Subsequently, the RSM model was used as the fitness function for multi-objective optimization of the ISF process based on experimental design. The results showed that RSM can be effectively used to control the forming angle, thickness reduction, and surface roughness.

  • In order to perform a successful material cutting process, the operators are to select the suitable machining tools and cutting conditions for the cutting environment. Up to now, this has been a complicated procedure done by the data in the tool manufacturers' paper catalog and the operator's experiencial knowledge, so called heuristics. This research is motivated by the fact that using computer techniques in processing vast amount of data and information, the operator can determine the tool and cutting condition easily. In the developed program, the selection of milling cutter, insert, and components are combined to provide optimal cutting speed, depth of cut, feed rate, rpm, and power. This program also provides the selection routine for end mill, drilling, turning, and grinding where the suitable tools are selected by workpiece, holder type, cut type, and insert shape.

  • The needs to machine hardened steels with high productivity and good sufrace integrity have been increased in the dies & molds industry. This paper presents some experimental results on the CBN ball endmilling for hardened tool steel. This investigation concerns on the effects of cutting fluids, cutting speed, and feed on the cutting performance such as cutting forces, tool wear, and surface finish. The wear of CBN ball endmill for each cutting conditions were also examined through the microscopic observation. It has been found that the higher cutting speeds with cutting fluids result in better cutting performance.

  • A hypereutectic Aluminum-Silicon Alloyis widely used in the parts of automobile because of high-resistance and good strength. In this study, the cutting of a hypereutectic A1-Si alloy (A390) for extraction of Si particle was experimentally investigatec. By proper selection of cutting tool material and optimization of cutting conditions economical machining of this alloy is achieved. The surface roughness relate closely with the feed rate and cutting speed.

  • Hard turning on modern lathes becomes a realistic replacement for many grinding applications. Because CBN tools are expensive, excessive tool wear can eliminate economic advantages of hard turning. This paper describes a study of investigating the cutting force and the characteristics of tool wear in hard turning of hardened steels, AISI 52100. Cutting forces generated using CBN tools have been evaluated. The radial thrust cutting force was the largest among three cutting force components. It increased dramatically as a result of progressive tool wear. On the other hand, the result shows significantly different wear characteristics between high CBN and low CBN. Backpropagation neural network was used for the estimation of tool wear. The networks were achieved the reliability of 96.3% even when the spindle speed and feed rate are changed.

  • Recently, the requirements for high precision and efficiency machining are gradually increased to raise international competitiveness at the industrial fields of die and molds. This trend had made effects on the industrial fields in Korea and which needs fur studying of high precision and efficiency machining. This study is to investigate the effects of the non-out of end mill in the external cylindrical machining operated by solid carbide end mills with Al-alloy in high speed machining center relating to high spindle revolution and frost fred per minute on the dimensional precision, roundness of workpiece. From the results of experimentations followings are obtained; when Al-alloy is processed by the external cylindrical cutting of end milling through the high speed revolution, if the spindle revolution is higher relating to radial depth of cut, feed per tooth in very lower situation, finally, productivity can be raised because high precision and quality products are machined high efficiently.
