  • Speech quality measurement is sorted subjective and objective speech quality measurements based on the mathematics representation. Between two, subjective speech quality measurement is able to be evaluated more accurate speech quality then objective one but it has a demerit such as taking much more time and cost to performance it. However, using objective speech quality measurement being able to predict the result of evaluating the subjective speech quality compliments the demerit of subjective standards which is mentioned former. In this paper, we propose the objective speech quality measurement in order to evaluate naturalness assessment approximately like subjective speech quality measurement. We measured naturalness of speech with estimating speaking rate, variation of pitch and energy.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the quality of synthesized speech by rule using the LPC CD as a objective measure, and then compare the test result with the subjective one. Speech used for the test consists of 108 words which are selected by word construction method using Korean attribute and frequency distribution, synthesized by demi-syllable rule. By evaluating the quality of synthesized speech by reule objectively, we have tried to resolve the problems such as lots of evaluation time, expansion of test scale, and variables of analysis result arised by subjective measure. We have, also, proved the validity of the objective test using the LPC CD, by comparing intelligibility which is the index for the subjective quality evaluation of synthesized speech by rule with MOS. From this results, we can provide a guide for quality assessment that would be useful in the R&D of synthesis method and the commercial products using synthesized speech.

  • As a result of recent progress in speech synthesis techniques, the those new services using new techniques are going to introduce into the telephone communication system. In setting standards, voice quality is obviously an important criterion. It is very important to develope a quality evaluation method of synthesized speech for the diagnostic assessment of system algorithm, and fair comparison of assessment values. This paper has described several basic concepts and criterions for quality assessment (intelligibility) of synthesized speech by rule, and then a word selection method and the word list to be used in word intelligibility test were proposed. Finally, a test method for word intelligibility is described.

  • Resonable speech quality assessment methodologies are required for speech quality assessment model which is used at speech system and communication network. There are objectlve measuies and subjective measures and subjective measure has the variousproblems in speech quality assessment methodologies. The objective of this study is to compare objective measures with subjective measure and obtain the objective measure as close as possible to subjective measure.

  • Assessing the quality of audio signals is an important consideration in making high quality sounds and various methods have been developed. This paper provides a general framework of sound quality and a technical overview of the international standard methods which are described in ITU-T, ITU-R, IEC and ANSI Recommendations in the speech intelligibility, speech quality, and audio quality areas. In addition, some recent findings and future works are included.

  • Background and Objectives: Although many studies have evaluated the effect of the digital noise reduction (DNR) algorithm of hearing aids (HAs) on speech recognition, there are few studies on the effect of DNR on music perception. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effect of DNR on music, in addition to speech perception, using objective and subjective measurements. Subjects and Methods: Sixteen HA users participated in this study (58.00±10.44 years; 3 males and 13 females). The objective assessment of speech and music perception was based on the Korean version of the Clinical Assessment of Music Perception test and word and sentence recognition scores. Meanwhile, for the subjective assessment, the quality rating of speech and music as well as self-reported HA benefits were evaluated. Results: There was no improvement conferred with DNR of HAs on the objective assessment tests of speech and music perception. The pitch discrimination at 262 Hz in the DNR-off condition was better than that in the unaided condition (p=0.024); however, the unaided condition and the DNR-on conditions did not differ. In the Korean music background questionnaire, responses regarding ease of communication were better in the DNR-on condition than in the DNR-off condition (p=0.029). Conclusions: Speech and music perception or sound quality did not improve with the activation of DNR. However, DNR positively influenced the listener's subjective listening comfort. The DNR-off condition in HAs may be beneficial for pitch discrimination at some frequencies.

  • This study investigates the effect of voice quality on speech intelligibility and the relationship between voice quality and intelligibility for children with spastic CP. We recruited 36 children with spastic CP (mean age 10.43 year, 17 girls, 19 boys, spastic type 34, mixed 2) from a special school and a rehabilitation hospital. Voice samples for the perceptual analysis of voice quality were extracted from a sustained vowel /a/ and were rated on the GRBAS scales by two experienced speech language pathologists. Ten adult subjects with no hearing problems evaluated speech intelligibility for the 37 words listed in the Assessment of Phonology and Articulation for Children on a 7-point interval scale. The children with spastic CP were divided into three groups according to the rated G scores on the GRBAS scales (G1(n)=10, G2(n)=13, G3(n)=13). Analyses of ANCOVA and Pearson correlation showed that there was a significant difference in speech intelligibility among three groups. There was also a significant correlation in G scale (grade), A scale (asthenia), B scale (breathy) score, and speech intelligibility. These findings suggest that poor speech intelligibility of spastic CP might be related to asthenia and breathiness. Vocal intensity should be increased and vocal functioning should be improved for speech therapy to improve speech intelligibility of the children with spastic CP.

  • In this paper to develop objective speech quality measure for CDMA telephone network environments, recent developed measures are investigated first. But those measures show low performances in CDMA telephone networks. To solve this problem, new objective speech quality measure adopting noise masking threshold is proposed and studied. To acquire better performance, scaled noise masking threshold calculation for speech signals is employed instead of conventional tone signals. To verify effectiveness of proposed method performance comparison experiments are carried out for CDMA telephone network speech databases, for the results proposed methods show improved performances compared to existing meaures.

  • The ATM network provides ATM CES(Circuit Emulation Services) with AAL1 for CBR(constant bit rate) services such as telephone speech. In this study, quality assessment of telephone speech with CES over ATM was performed and discussed. For this, interoperability between ATM network and structured/unstructured DS1 link was modeled for simulation. And for qualiy assessment of telephone speech, SNR and MOS were used as an objective and a subjective measure, respectively. Experimental results have shown that MOS score 4 as well as SNR 30dB could be obtained at CLR of $10^{-3}$ or below for speech signal.
