An AMR(Adaptive Multi-Rate) speech coding algorithm has been adopted as a standard speech codec for IMT-2000. It is based on the algebraic CELP, and consists of eight speech coding modes having the bit rate from 4.75 kbit/s to 12.2 kbit/s. It also contains the VAD(Voice Activity Detector), SCR (Source Controlled Rate) operation, and error concealment scheme for robustness in a radio channel. The bit rate of AMR is changed on a frame basis depending on the channel condition. In this paper, we introduced AMR speech coding algorithm and performed the real-time implementation using TMS320C6201, i.e., a Texas Instrument's fixed-point DSP. With the ANSI C source code released from ETSI and 3GPP, we convert and optimize the program to make it run in real time using the C compiler and assembly language. It is verified that the decoded result of the implemented speech codec on the DSP is identical with the PC simulation result using ANSI C code for test sequences. Also, actual sound input/output test using microphone and speaker demonstrates its proper real-time operation without distortions or delays.

We compared CS-ACELP with QCELP speech coder in CDMA cellular under channel error environment and experimented performance with its measured value under channel error environment. Also, we specified the effective coding scheme to overcome. CS-ACELP speech coder using a LSP vector quantizer shows transparent speech quality from the results that SD is 0.92dB and outlier frames over 2dB is 2.9% in the BER 0.10% condition. CS-ACELP speech coder which is utilizing MA predictor shows better results on SVR and SEGSNR than QCELP speech coder(IS-96) adopting DPCM type predictor when bit error occurs from BER 0.01% to 0.50%.

Recently, the use of signal compression methods to improve the efficiency of wireless networks have increased. In particular, the MPC system was used in the pitch extraction method and the excitation source of voiced and unvoiced to reduce the bit rate. In general, the MPC system using an excitation source of voiced and unvoiced would result in a distortion of the synthesis speech waveform in the case of voiced and unvoiced consonants in a frame. This is caused by normalization of the synthesis speech waveform in the process of restoring the multi-pulses of the representation segment. This paper presents an ACFBD-MPC (Amplitude Compensation Frequency Band Division-Multi Pulse Coding) using amplitude compensation in a multi-pulses each pitch interval and specific frequency to reduce the distortion of the synthesis speech waveform. The experiments were performed with 16 sentences of male and female voices. The voice signal was A/D converted to 10kHz 12bit. In addition, the ACFBD-MPC system was realized and the SNR of the ACFBD-MPC estimated in the coding condition of 8kbps. As a result, the SNR of ACFBD-MPC was 13.6dB for the female voice and 14.2dB for the male voice. The ACFBD-MPC improved the male and female voice by 1 dB and 0.9 dB, respectively, compared to the traditional MPC. This method is expected to be used for cellular telephones and smartphones using the excitation source with a low bit rate.
This thesis aims at studying laplacian pyramid vector quantization which keeps a simple compression algorithm and stability against various kinds of image data. To this end, images are devied into two groups according to their statistical characteristics. At 0.860 bits/pixel and 0.360 bits/pixel respectively, laplacian pyramid vector quantization is compared to the existing spatial domain vector quantization and transform coding under the same condition in both objective and subjective value. The laplacian pyramid vector quantization is much more stable against the statistical characteristics of images than the existing vector quantization and transform coding.
This paper present an 8kbps ACLMS-MPC(Amplitude Compensation and Least Mean Square - Multi Pulse Coding) coding method integrated with ACFBD-MPC(Amplitude Compensation Frequency Band Division - Multi Pulse Coding) and LMS-MPC(Least Mean Square - Multi Pulse Coding) used V/UV/S(Voiced / Unvoiced / Silence) switching, compensation in a multi-pulses each pitch interval and Unvoiced approximate-synthesis by using specific frequency in order to reduce distortion of synthesis waveform. In integrating several methods, it is important to adjust the bit rate of voiced and unvoiced sound source to 8kbps while reducing the distortion of the speech waveform. In adjusting the bit rate of voiced and unvoiced sound source to 8 kbps, the speech waveform can be synthesized efficiently by restoring the individual pitch intervals using multi pulse in the representative interval. I was implemented that the ACLMS-MPC method and evaluate the SNR of APC-LMS in coding condition in 8kbps. As a result, SNR of ACLMS-MPC was 15.0dB for female voice and 14.3dB for male voice respectively. Therefore, I found that ACLMS-MPC was improved by 0.3dB~1.8dB for male voice and 0.3dB~1.6dB for female voice compared to existing MPC, ACFBD-MPC and LMS-MPC. These methods are expected to be applied to a method of speech coding using sound source in a low bit rate such as a cellular phone or internet phone. In the future, I will study the evaluation of the sound quality of 6.9kbps speech coding method that simultaneously compensation the amplitude and position of multi-pulse source.
In a MPC coding using excitation source of voiced and unvoiced, it would be a distortion of speech waveform. This is caused by normalization of synthesis speech waveform of voiced in the process of restoration the multi-pulses of representation section. This paper present PCFBD-MPC( Position Compensation Frequency Band Division-Multi Pulse Coding ) used V/UV/S( Voiced / Unvoiced / Silence ) switching, position compensation in a multi-pulses each pitch interval and Unvoiced approximate-synthesis by using specific frequency in order to reduce distortion of synthesis waveform. Also, I was implemented that the PCFBD-MPC( Position Compensation Frequency Band Division-Multi Pulse Coding ) system and evaluate the SNRseg of PCFBD-MPC in coding condition of 8kbps. As a result, SNRseg of PCFBD-MPC was 13.4dB for female voice and 13.8dB for male voice respectively. In the future, I will study the evaluation of the sound quality of 8kbps speech coding method that simultaneously compensation the amplitude and position of multi-pulse source. These methods are expected to be applied to a method of speech coding using sound source in a low bit rate such as a cellular phone or a smart phone.

Despite of the in-depth effort to cantrol the variability in IP networks, quality of service (QoS) is still not guaranteed in the IP networks. Thus, it is necessary to deal with the audible artifacts caused by packet lasses. To overcame the packet loss problem, most speech coding standard have their own embedded packet loss concealment (PLC) algorithms which adapt extrapolation methods utilizing the dependency on adjacent frames. Since many low bit rate CELP coders use predictive schemes for increasing coding efficiency, however, error propagation occurs even if single packet is lost. In this paper, we propose an efficient PLC algorithm with consideration about the speech characteristics of lost frames. To design an efficient PLC algorithm, we perform several experiments on investigating the error propagation effect of lost frames of a predictive coder. And then, we summarize the impact of packet loss to the speech characteristics and analyze the importance of the encoded parameters depending on each speech classes. From the result of the experiments, we propose a new PLC algorithm that mainly focuses on reducing the error propagation time. Experimental results show that the performance is much higher than conventional extrapolation methods over various frame erasure rate (FER) conditions. Especially the difference is remarkable in high FER condition.
In a MPC(Multi-Pulse Coding) using excitation source of voiced and unvoiced, it would be a distortion of voice waveform. This is caused by normalization of synthesis speech waveform of voiced in the process of restoration. To solve this problem, this paper present APC-MPC of amplitude-position compensation in a multi-pulses each pitch interval in order to reduce distortion of synthesis waveform. Also, I was implemented that the APC-MPC in coding system. And I evaluate the SNRseg of APC-MPC in 8kbps coding condition of convergence system. As a result, SNRseg of APC-MPC was 13.9dB for female voice and 14.3dB for male voice respectively. And so, I expect to be able to this method for cellular phone and smart phone using excitation source of low bit rate.

Wideband speech, characterized by a bandwidth of about 7 kHz (50-7000 Hz), provides a substantial quality improvement in terms of naturalness and intelligibility. Although higher data rates are required, it has extended its application to audio and video conferencing, high-quality multimedia communications in mobile links or packet-switched transmissions, and digital AM broadcasting. In this paper, we present a new bandwidth-scalable coder for wideband speech and audio signals. The proposed coder spits 8kHz signal bandwidth into two narrow bands, and different coding schemes are applied to each band. The lower-band signal is coded using the ITU-T G.729/G.729E coder, and the higher-band signal is compressed using a new algorithm based on the gammatone filter bank with an invertible auditory model. Due to the split-band architecture and completely independent coding schemes for each band, the output speech of the decoder can be selected to be a narrowband or wideband according to the channel condition. Subjective tests showed that, for wideband speech and audio signals, the proposed coder at 14.2/18 kbit/s produces superior quality to ITU-T 24 kbit/s G.722.1 with the shorter algorithmic delay.
This paper proposes an algorithm to improve the compression performance of the adaptive multi-rate (AMR) speech coding using the context tree weighting (CTW) method. AMR is the voice encoding standard adopted by IMT-2000, and supports 8 transmission rates from 4.75 kbit/s to 12.2 kbit/s to cope with changes in the channel condition. CTW as a kind of the arithmetic coding, uses a variable-order Markov model. Considering that CTW operates bit by bit, we propose an algorithm that re-orders AMR data and compresses them with CTW. To verify the validity of the proposed algorithm, an experiment is conducted to compare the proposed algorithm with existing compression methods including ZIP in terms of compression ratio. Experimental results indicate that the average additional compression rate in AMR data is about 3.21% with ZIP and about 9.10% with the proposed algorithm. Thus our algorithm improves the compression performance of AMR data by about 5.89%.
