4광파 혼합 현상을 이용한 스펙트럼 저미어진 광섬유 증폭 광원의 SNR 개선 방법 (A novel method to improve SNR of the spectrum-sliced incoherent light source using the four-wave mixing in a dispersion-shifted fiber)

  • 본 논문에서는 고속 장거리 광전송시스템에서 스펙트럼 저미어진 광섬유 증폭 광원의 분산 패널티를 줄일 수 있는 전 광학적 방법을 새로이 제안하였다. 즉, 수신된 신호의 광 선폭을 확장하므로 잡음광의 2.5 Gb/s 전송에 필요한 송신 채널의 선폭을 0.1 nm까지 줄였다. 선폭 확장은 분산천이 광섬유에서 intra-channel 4광파 혼합현상을 이용하였으며, 그 결과 송신채널의 신호대 잡음비를 개선할 수 있었다. 이 방법을 이용하여 0.1 nm 채널 선폭을 갖는 2.5Gb/s NRZ 변조된 광신호의 분산천이 광섬유 300 km 전송을 성공적으로 수행하였다. 선폭 확대 전에는 비트 에러율이 $1{\times}10^{-5}$이었으나, 선폭 확대 후 비트 에러율이 $1{\times}10^{-10}$ 이하로 개선되었으며, 측정한 전송 패널티는 05. dB 이하였다. 이 결과는 지금까지 보고된 가간섭성이 없는 잡음 광원을 사용한 2.5 Gb/s 전송 실험 중에서 최소의 선폭과 최고의 전송거리 값을 갖는 결과이다.

The Dispersion Stability of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in the Presence of Poly(styrene/$\alpha-methyl$ styrene/acrylic acid) Random Terpolymer

  • Aqueous dispersions of pristine and functionalized (COOH- and $NH_2$-) multi-walled, carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by using three types of surf act ants: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, anionic), PEO-PPO-PEO (Pluronic P84, non-ionic), and poly(styrene/$\alpha-methyl$ styrene/acrylic acid) random terpolymer, i.e., alkali-soluble resin (ASR). The aggregate size, $\zeta-potential$, and storage stability of the MWNT aqueous dispersions were investigated by using dynamic light scattering and the turbidity method at room temperature. The exfoliation of the MWNT aggregates was determined by a UV-visible spectrophotometer and the morphology of the surfactant-coated MWNTs was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In all cases, ASR showed better dispersion stability with the smallest aggregate size, compared with the other surfactants, because of its unique molecular structure, i.e., randomly incorporated carboxylic acid groups and planar phenyl groups that can be irreversibly and effectively adsorbed on the MWNT surface. A predominantly-exfoliated morphology of MWNTs was observed in the presence of ASR from the strong intensity of the UV-vis spectrum at 263 nm.

  • $TiO_2$ nano-particle paste was prepared by ethyl cellulose, $\alpha$-terpineol and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (dioxcyl phthalate) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Dispersion and absorbance of $TiO_2$ photoanode films was controlled by adding different amount of ethyl cellulose and $\alpha$-terpineol. The morphology of prepared $TiO_2$ films was studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and the optical properties of $TiO_2$ films were measured by UV/vis spectra. Photovoltaic-current density was observed to determine the electrochemical response of DSSCs. Energy conversion efficiency was obtained about 7.1% at ethyl cellulose and $\alpha$-terpineol at optimal mixed ratio (as ethyl cellulose: 0.1 g; $\alpha$-terpineol: 1.5 ml) under illumination with AM 1.5($100\;Wcm^{-2}$) simulated sunlight.

  • Magnetite for Water-based ferrofluid was synthesized by air oxidation of aqueous suspension in the pH range 7-12 at $65^{\circ}C$. The optimum condition of magneite formation was delineated by examining various physicochemcial properties such as Fe2+ content, phase characteristics, MHC and $\sigma$max. The point of zero charge of iron oxide powders obtained at various pH conditions were correlated with the oxidation state of Fe in the iron oxide. The magnetite powder prepared at pH 9 ws dispersed using sodium oleate and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) as dispersants, and the dispersion characteristics of the magnetite ferrofluid were examined by means of the fraction of solid dispersed, zeta potential data and FT-IR spectrum. A simple calculation on the potential energy of two interacting magnetite particles showed that the dispersion stability was directly correlated with height of the potential energy barrier or the shape of zeta potential.

Dynamical Structure of NGC 4486

  • The peculiar elliptical (EOp) galaxy NGC 4486 and two KOII comparison stars HR5450, HR6935 were observed spectroscopically using the 74-inch telescope and Image Tube at Mt. Stomlo Observatory. From the Gaussian Broadening Function, broadened spectrum of two comparison stars were computed for the range between wavelength 4800$\AA$ and 5400$\AA$. Velocity dispersions in the line of sight of M87 were obtained by visual fitting. The fitted velocity dispersion is 450 km/sec at the nucleus, 350km/sec at r=12", and 300km/sec at r=24". Using the photometric data and the central value of velocity dispersion, we determined the mass of M87. From <$r^{2/4}$ law and the Virial theorem the calculated total mass in $2.1\times10^{12}M_\odot$ and from the King Model $M=1.2\times10^{12}M_\odot$. And M/L ratio of M87 is about 30.

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) nanopowders were synthesized by coprecipitation and the sol-gel method to prepare a stable dispersion of ITO nano-colloid for antistatic coating of a display panel. The colloidal dispersions were prepared by attrition process with a vibratory milling apparatus using a suitable dispersant in organic solvent. The ITO coating solution was spin-coated on a glass panel followed by the deposition of partially hydrolyzed alkyl silicate as an over-coat layer. The double-layered coating films were characterized by measuring the sheet resistance and reflectance spectrum for antistatic and antireflective properties.

An improved cross-correlation method based on wavelet transform and energy feature extraction for pipeline leak detection

  • Early detection and precise location of leakage is of great importance for life-cycle maintenance and management of municipal pipeline system. In the past few years, acoustic emission (AE) techniques have demonstrated to be an excellent tool for on-line leakage detection. Regarding the multi-mode and frequency dispersion characteristics of AE signals propagating along a pipeline, the direct cross-correlation technique that assumes the constant AE propagation velocity does not perform well in practice for acoustic leak location. This paper presents an improved cross-correlation method based on wavelet transform, with due consideration of the frequency dispersion characteristics of AE wave and the contribution of different mode. Laboratory experiments conducted to simulate pipeline gas leakage and investigate the frequency spectrum signatures of AE leak signals. By comparing with the other methods for leak location identification, the feasibility and superiority of the proposed method are verified.

  • Spectroscopic ellipsometry is a powerful tool for analyzing optical properties of material. Ellipsometry measurement results is usually given by change of polarization state of probe light, so the measured result should be properly treated and transformed to meaningful parameters by transformation and modeling of the measurement result. In case of hydrogenated amorphous silicon, Tauc-Lorentz dispersion is usually used to model the measured ellipsometry spectrum. In this paper, modeling of spectroscopic ellipsometry result of hydrogenated amorphous silicon using Tauc-Lorentz dispersion is discussed.

Enhancing Thermal Conductivity in Epoxy Composites with Functionalized Boron Nitride Nanosheets

  • This comprehensive study delves into the intricate process of exfoliating and functionalizing boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) extracted from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and meticulously explores their potential application within epoxy composites. The extensive research methodology encompasses a sequence of treatments involving hydrothermal and sonication processes aimed at augmenting the dispersion of BNNSs in solvents. Leveraging advanced analytical techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and FTIR spectroscopy, the study rigorously analyzes a spectrum of changes in the BNNS's properties, including layer count variations, interlayer interactions, crystal structure modifications, and the introduction of functional groups. The research also rigorously evaluates the impact of integrating BNNSs, specifically glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-functionalized BNNSs, on the thermal conductivity of epoxy composites. The conclusive findings exhibit notable enhancements in thermal properties, predominantly attributed to the enhanced dispersion of fillers and enhanced interactions within the epoxy matrix. Properties of Interstellar Turbulence in Galactic Ring Survey

  • We have studied the properties of interstellar turbulence as observed by Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (BU-FCRAO) Galactic Ring Survey (GRS). This observation uses 13CO J=$1{\rightarrow}0$ emission with high spectral resolution of 0.21 kms-1 and covers wide galactic plane regions ($18^{\circ}$ < 1 < $55.7^{\circ}$ and -1 < b < $1^{\circ}$). Firstly, we measured the one dimensional power spectrum of 13CO intensity along the galactic longitude and along the galactic latitude. We found the slope of the power spectrum changes around the molecular ring structure and the center of the galactic plane. Secondly, we explored how the power spectral slope is related with the velocity dispersion of supersonic giant molecular clouds in the GRS. Finally, we suggest the turbulent nature of the interstellar medium is connected with star formation activities in spiral arms.
